port11··on Every Mac comes with an (undocumented) family member classifier
I think of privacy as the right to be myself, because I get to choose which parts of my persona(s?) to expose.

People change over time, and those I care about will be part of the journey. We don’t remember each other’s mistakes all the time.

And then, of course, there is the effort we put into these relationships. I’d rather a friend forgets my birthday and apologises than their LLM of choice automatically sends me a carefully crafted messaged based on our interactions.

Maybe we’re the weird ones.

port11··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
> I have a deep affection for stories where people are depicted as good, or even just good at their jobs.

I’m very fond of the movie Paterson. There’s nothing special about it, and I never mention it to anyone in real life because I think they won’t like it.

It’s just 2 hours of a couple being happy and a guy being ok with his job and his one hobby. Lovely.

These two are some of my favourite actors.

But only these 2, only software with telemetry and web browsers. There are no RCEs in anything else…

You’d think we learned this during all the front-end rewrites of the 2010s…

This is more like ALL the developers have just joined a company where no other devs work and can pass along institutional knowledge. You know, the thing that makes all that complexity wieldy.

Then it’s a residential botnet.
port11··on OpenAI to acquire Pierre Computer Company
It’s the circular economy we keep hearing about, investors put money into OpenAI and they send it to silly, barely profitable projects.
port11··on Residential proxies detected on White House network
I didn’t know this was a thing. Yikes. I’m gonna freak out now and find a way to prevent that in our home network.

And I’d argue that’s not clean business, the user doesn’t know what their connection is being used for :)

port11··on Residential proxies detected on White House network
Thanks for clarifying the language. I don’t understand why we softened ‘botnet’, it’s much clearer and powerful.
port11··on Lenovo's 'encrypted' fingerprint USB is just an unencrypted SD card in a case
Framework and System76? Maybe?
port11··on Lenovo's 'encrypted' fingerprint USB is just an unencrypted SD card in a case
Still works? My 3rd party Reddit browser can no longer sort. And Old Reddit doesn’t work for some subs.
port11··on Lenovo's 'encrypted' fingerprint USB is just an unencrypted SD card in a case
So, technically, it’s a fingerprint-protected USB adapter. That’s pretty cool. Useless, but cool.
port11··on Herdr has released native app
We definitely want up-to-date software that has patched its vulnerabilities, but you’re right that auto-updates are a bit of a liability lately. Especially so if we keep vibe coding security nonsense into our apps.

I’m more worried about the auto-on telemetry, gives a sense of “we don’t bother asking”.

port11··on Self-Employed? Solopreneur? NIST Has a Cybersecurity Guide Just for You
You’re being too pessimistic. Password manager, changing device defaults, backups, and access controls are all very good recommendations, if a little basic.

The rest is indeed more of a compliance thing, but plenty of small businesses won’t do the 4 things I mentioned above.

port11··on Anthropic to receive high 'junk' rating from credit agencies following IPO
I’m not sure this is still the case. An AdWords campaign worth its salt is going to cost a lot more money than some local advertising, and with plenty of bot fraud to boot.

I asked some magazines for print ads and one issue is 60-150€ in my niche. That’s not bad, I think I’ve blown twice that in digital ads before to help a friend and we got a 2 conversions to a paying customer.

Dunno. Maybe at a large scale digital advertising is where you have to go, but small businesses might actually benefit from… small advertising.

Given Vercel’s plunge in some circles, maybe it does run the product. Might want to install some Product Manager skills on their Claudes.
port11··on U.S. Oil Industry Earned over $130B in Profit During Iran War
I understand the cynicism and… well, I agree.

Hopefully, Europe has learned something and our energy dependency and trade policy changes a little bit.

Hopefully, US voters are now a little more careful with the choices they make.

Not to be too Eurocentric, but we didn’t need a 2nd energy crisis in 4 years, this time caused not by Evil Russia but our old, trusted ally.

port11··on If IPv4 were land
My hosting providers gives you IPv6 for free, whereas IPv4 costs ~3€/month. It seems like a no brainer, until you realise that many clients wouldn’t be able to find you with IPv6 alone.

So I don’t see how to fix this except at the ISP level (forcing them). No one is preventing this but the providers.

To be fair, train crashes happen rarely enough that the safety procedures are in place and work (at least most of the time).
port11··on Code-execution flaw in UEFI firmware threatens most servers on planet Earth
It’s still a relatively decent and ambitious thing to aspire to, i.e. a lean interface/tool scope that prevents scope creep. Composability (with pipelines) also works quite well. But yes, it is somewhat propaganda.

Google’s issue (and many large companies’?) is organisational. Google has famously launched a bunch of products to compete in multiple markets, only to sunset these products soon after.

Good heavens, if your Duo breaks, it’s cheaper to get almost ANY other new phone.

I don’t find a non-smart 4K television on Bol, except for a single 800€ model. Sorry but it’s not 2016, I’m not gonna sit and watch content at a resolution worse than my laptop’s.
