porterhaney··on Buffer raises $3.5M
I'll second my name-twin's sentiments and add:

It's fantastic to see a dividend based model being introduced into early round VC fundraising. It's an alternative to liquidity and something that should/can move upstream. Bravo to Buffer for leading the charge.

porterhaney··on Two Polls That Highlight the Challenges of Polling
The large problem, that's becoming larger, is that a good portion of a representative audience no longer has land line phones, and refuses to answer phones in general. This type of polling is becoming less and less valuable over time, and will need to be transitioned to digital polling in the near future.
porterhaney··on I banned email at my startup
How do you manage official communications internally? Announcements, HR, etc?

This would be similar to this acquisition IMO: http://www.macworld.com/article/2083997/apple-acquires-snapp...
porterhaney··on Canada's Pitch to Tech Entrepreneur: We'll Pay 80% of Your Salaries
That is the most offensive representation of poutine I've ever seen.
porterhaney··on Employee Equity
Adding to Sam's post I'd like to see employees made aware about tools like 83(b) elections to decrease their tax liability.
porterhaney··on Amazon Dash
The loop on the end is for opening beers.
porterhaney··on Show HN: Left Buzzfeed to launch this
I can see selling replacements.

Like you don't want to see the Red Sox, maybe the yankees pay to replace all things red socks.

porterhaney··on Our Logo Looks Like Underpants: A Case Study in Internationalization
Good tidbit in the conclusion: "Hackathons are an amazing resource for kick-starting new ideas and proving out concepts. However, they should never be used to circumvent due diligence on big business decisions."

That's a load off. I thought they were talking about Tumblr.

porterhaney··on Yahoo Has Acquired Rockmelt, Apps To Shut Down On August 31st
This acquisition reminds me a lot of Hunch. It's a similar size in terms of team + cost per team member. $2-3M/employee. And, Hunch's core tech seems to have gone into the eBay homepage, which is what Sarah is proposing Yahoo do with Rockmelt.
porterhaney··on Virgin Galactic goes faster than speed of sound in flight test
Meh. I saw a guy break the sound barrier just by falling.
porterhaney··on How Facebook Gets Away With Being Broken On Purpose
It's interesting to me that Facebook is getting called out on this when Twitter does the exact same thing. I know a few folks with +1M Twitter followers that have stopped using the service because they were upset that Twitter was not delivering their Tweets to every one of their followers.
porterhaney··on Facebook Connect was down
I'm surprised the redirect loop can even happen. Seems malicious. Another example: http://www.usatoday.com
porterhaney··on Apple’s Q1 2013: Revenue Up 17.7% to $54.5B, $13.1B In Profit
FYI: Q1 2012 = 14 weeks Q1 2013 = 13 weeks

Q1 2012 profit/week = $0.93B Q1 2013 profit/week = $1.00B

porterhaney··on Kevin Systrom On Pulling Twitter Cards Integration
It's funny. Without Twitter and Facebook to distribute Instagram's content they would have never been able to grow to such a size so quickly.

Now that they've reached this large critical mass of users they can afford to go back and pull their content from the networks that made it popular in the first place.

porterhaney··on How We Built USA Today's Election Night Maps
This is a great write-up.

I love seeing your thought process on how you tackled the project. The bonus playback of realtime results and the not preloading county data are two very good examples of problems that need solving when you take on a project like this. Super write up.

porterhaney··on Ask HN: Can I visit your startup in SF?
Will you be bringing poutine?
porterhaney··on AMA with Barack Obama
I think it's particularly interesting to watch some internet event go "mainstream" and watch even large services like reddit strain under the load. Put some perspective around how many people true mainstream media services reach.
porterhaney··on Twitter Removes 'Via' Stamp From Web Client
I really liked the via tag for one purpose.

Buffer.

I liked to know when folks were live tweeting versus time delayed tweeting as it gave me context. If they were live, I'd respond. If they weren't I'd just consumer the content (if interested) and move on.

porterhaney··on Why Do Startups Do This?
Same could be said of this blog:

Asymptomatic There must be intelligent life down here

Doesn't tell me very much about who the author is, what he typically writes about.

porterhaney··on How Wedgies.com Sidestepped a Domain Squatting Felon to buy their dotcom
Their only chance is to hope they bought a single word domain in 1995 and hope they can sell it off to pay for their ankle bracelet.
porterhaney··on My $47 collapsible standing desk
I mean, this could be a sitting desk if you mounted it a touch lower.
porterhaney··on Show HN: VA kids love drinking, hate paying. Step 1. Thoughts?
I was one of the first college kids outside harvard to get my eyes on facebook almost 8 years ago. This reminds me a lot of that.

When FB first came about everyone was chasing girls using AIM. People started posting links to their FB page on their AIM profile and all of the sudden we had a new way to chase girls.

The other college ingredient besides chasing girls, is going to drink.

A tool to sort by price/specials, plus the college level distribution of it, is spot on. I'd keep going with this idea.
