post_break··on Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone
Please let this be real. I need my 17 Pro to be jailbroken. I may keep my 13 Mini if it works for it too. This will be bliss.
post_break··on Apple broke an essential presentation feature of iPads
I hate stuff like this. Apple changed how the new Apple Watch buttons work, breaking massive muscle memory on how to get the app switcher. "Thankfully" my Apple Watch "ultra" from 4 years ago is basically considered obsolete so it won't get the update.

MacOS 27 has made adding an AirPlay display a chore, it's gone from the setting panel and now in the quick settings on the top right. Took me forever to figure that one out.

My iPad with a faster chip than my MacBook Pro can't do the most basic computer things even though the form factor is what I want from a modern computer.

post_break··on Siri is so bad at everything
I have a bunch of lights and speakers. I shouldn't have to factory reset and rebuild my whole life. I understand you're trying to help but that's just such a chore.
post_break··on Siri is so bad at everything
Here's my tiny anecdote about Siri. It's so garbage I had to name my garage door "The garage door" because without the extra THE it would often refuse or tell me that device can't be opened.

Siri needs to be spoonfed the most basic things, and it's not getting any better. Google doesn't get any passes since my Google Home appears to be getting alzheimer's after the Gemini "upgrade".

post_break··on The Haunted Toys R Us
I used to work for Toys R Us, so here's a random anecdote no one asked for. When you called the store and were put on hold there would obviously be hold music. The music that played? It was the same music that was playing in the store. I remember calling in one day to get my shift assignment and the music was super weird, I told me coworker and he was like "yeah that's the music they are blasting in here, it's awful."
post_break··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
Meanwhile I just went back to my dentist to get a cleaning and a filling fixed. I have bad anxiety from growing up with a Dentist who could be described as Jigsaw from the saw movies. My current dentist has nitrous, which is a game changer for me. He also has hardcore numbing cream before the shot, and he also uses a two shot method, the first one is initial numbing that doesn't last long but also doesn't burn as much. And the second after that is full strength but by that time thanks to the gas and the first shot and the numbing cream I can't feel.
post_break··on Updates to Full Disk Access in macOS
One update away to revoking Full Disk Access in the future. This commercial has come full circle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuqZ8AqmLPY
post_break··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
I'll never forget when an employee at Samsung asked on their internal chat why the built in Weather app has ads, and they turned them off. https://www.androidauthority.com/samsung-remove-ads-2735914/
post_break··on Wax motor
My mini truck uses a couple of these with vacuum lines to control the choke and EGR. They are expensive to replace for obvious reasons.
post_break··on Microsoft patches Windows and Excel – breaks audio, remote access, and paste
There's a massive RDP bug in the new update that is breaking stuff with no fix right now. Congrats Microsoft on the help desk ticket generation.

post_break··on Who People Talk to When They're Struggling
I'd be curious about the results in the main graph if it included no one. That would be much more telling, because right now it appears that most people talk to at least someone.
post_break··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
China figured out how to make thermal imaging sensors as well. Why would you buy a $4,000 Flir with less resolution when you can get a $400 Topdon. What's funny is now it appears Flir has cut their prices dramatically to compete.
post_break··on iPhone Duo
Somewhat related, Apple snuck in a $100 price increase on the regular iPhone 17.
post_break··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Contact Apple care and see what they can do. They have been known to do upgrades if you buy around the same time. But with the ram situation that courtesy might be gone now.
post_break··on New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro
So the price just went up by another $100 am I reading that right?
post_break··on Apple Introduces New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
To me it seems like a cheeky way to preface the AI part of the title.
post_break··on Stop eating Lady Gaga's Oreos
Stop eating oreos because they changed the formula, the filling can now be described as white paste product, and they want $4.99 for the "family" size now. I know this isn't what the article is about, but I'm sad by what Oreos have become.
post_break··on Unlocking a locked/deactivated e-waste Cricut Maker
Siser machines are as consumer as you can get but still get control over them. They are more like the commercial grade ones. I have a Juliet and love it.
post_break··on Turning a dumb AC unit smart (without losing my security deposit)
Well considering those units have an EER rating of 10-11, my comment stands. The midea duo has a SEER of 14.7. 1200 watts vs 816 watts.
post_break··on Turning a dumb AC unit smart (without losing my security deposit)
Yes, except for dual hose inverter ones.
post_break··on Turning a dumb AC unit smart (without losing my security deposit)
Assuming running a dual hose inverter portable AC isn't against the lease agreement it would probably pay for itself based on the power usage. Pretty neat hack regardless.
post_break··on Mechanical light bulb from 1675 [video]
I wish these could be made with something non toxic. Having one on my desk to shake would be a great fidget spinner.
post_break··on VTubing: How a Japanese Phenomenon Is Going Worldwide
My favorite story about Vtubing was someone explaining what Vtubing was to their older dad. And after some explaining he said "Oh! Like Tool Bear!" He's a youtuber vtuber who reviews and talks about tools.
post_break··on Physical disc production ending in Jan 2028 for new games on PlayStation
The deal with consoles is if you buy physical discs, you can trade them share them or sell them. The deal with PC is if you buy with steam or GOG, you keep the games, upgrade your pc, keep playing them. You can download them to your hard drive and keep them.

Taking away physical discs from consoles means the worst of both worlds. You can no longer sell or trade your games, and they are essentially locked to that hardware.

post_break··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
Xbox just increased prices this morning. I think Apple was the canary, expect large increases in tech soon. If you need something remotely in the future buy it now.
post_break··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
The increase to the old Apple TV or Homepod is egregious.
post_break··on I am a person who will look at the Steam Machine and cry
You have a steam deck you don't use, so sell it and buy the Steam Machine, and then don't use that either.
post_break··on Car headlights don't have to be this blinding
As someone who has retrofitted headlights with proper HID projectors, deal with RHD to LHD conversions, on some vehicles you can make your headlights look absolutely amazing, with no glare or harm to oncoming traffic. Some of these OEM headlight designs are atrocious. 2015ish F250's are some of the worst headlights when it comes to this.

What really pisses me off? LED bulbs only available in 6000k or higher. I had to import some Osram H4 bulbs from the netherlands because they are a warmer factory 3000K temperature. We really need regulation on glare, because right now it's the wild west.

post_break··on Massachusetts bans sale of precise location data in new privacy rights bill
Your driving habits, and everyone around you are impacting car insurance for example.
post_break··on Massachusetts bans sale of precise location data in new privacy rights bill
Does this include vehicle data? That's a big one. Your new car selling you out constantly.
