proxysna··on AlpineBSD
> NetBSD kernel has spotty hardware support

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Still remember the times when the meme was that the NetBSD was running on absolutely anything.

proxysna··on QGIS enacts moratorium on AI contributions
Good, QGIS is one of the projects that can be put closer to the bottom of the stack in that XKCD comic. I've seen QGIS being used just as a visualisation tool, and i mean it's good at it too, but even in a limited use case i am aware of it was used to do important infrastructure work like planning water pipelines and predicting failures for said pipelines.

Edit: https://xkcd.com/2347/

proxysna··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
Maintenance is not an issue, if vm/pc setup is done correctly. Simple is better in that case. Just a docker-compose or two or three with app data stored directly on disk to be able to move things easily between VM/PC's if needed. If hosted on VPS, set up your containers to be accesible only through VPN and you're good to go.

Things i use daily-ish:

- Wireguard with wg-easy to access my home network and other way around to keep services i don't want to be seen on my network away from my ISP.

- Calibre-web for my ebooks

- Forgejo/Gitea as local git server + CrowCI for my hobby projects.

- Samba server to access my things over the network.

- Trillium for note taking.

- Nomad for my other more infra related projects

proxysna··on Micron CEO Says Memory Supply Will Be Much Tighter in 2027 and 2028 Than in 2026
I have huge hopes fox CXMT entering the market and at least offsetting this nightmare. Just this week i've paid ~$1k USD for 2x32G DDR5 ECC, insane.
proxysna··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
yeah
proxysna··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
Complex enough where performance matters. I've done entire applications, client, server, infra and ci as an experiment with deepseek v4 pro a few months ago. Works for that too.
proxysna··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
I am doing mostly hardware drivers recently, it works fine for complex work.
proxysna··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
Recently, drivers for a bunch of obscure hardware. Lots of c\c++, that i am ok with but not enough to make hardware drivers (i am just impatient). Just using pi agent with a few plugins.
proxysna··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
Afaik there is just pay-as-use with Deepseek
proxysna··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
I use pi.dev, it is pretty minimal, but you can extend it however you want since agent has access to it's own documentation.
proxysna··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
I am yet to spend $200 on deepseek this year. Not sure what kind of usage can justify $200/month of either openai or anthropic, i'm not even talking about $500. Deepseek is faster, IMO intelligence difference is negligible and it so much cheaper that i no longer care about how much i use it. I never hit any daily/weekly quota or anything like that while working or tinkering. At this point i am OK with being 6 months behind the "frontier", purely on bang-for-buck basis and who cares which shadowy government gets my data.
proxysna··on Fool's Expertise
As long as AI does not have legs to chase me and hands to choke me out, any sort of AI doom is just a litmus test for hype merchants. All of the recent "false flags" with OpenAI and Anthropic "hacking" things without doing any meaningful harm is just another set of things pointing towards it. LLM's are a great tool, but as long as it is .gguf somewhere on a drive that can be rm'd, unless they just connect the nukes to claude with --dangerously-skip-permissions, is just a meme.
proxysna··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
2014-2017 I was supporting a clipper setup for issuing work order and many other tasks for an old civil aviation repair plant. I’ve ended up virtualising and moving it to a hyperv cluster. Definitely the case of “if it works, don’t touch it”. Also set up a closed network for CNC machines to let engineers in the shop send jobs over the net instead of running around with floppies or manually entering gcode through the console. Fun times.
proxysna··on What Sun got wrong
I’ve had that experience with dell consistently over the last 6+ years. While with other vendors I can do everything over email from start to finish, Dell insists on meetings, follow-ups on topics that I said I am not interested in talking about, services that I do not need, meetings with teams I am not interested in meeting, reps that straight up skip meetings, so I have to console a junior rep that got stuck in a meeting that is above their pay grade. Different reps same slimy bs.
proxysna··on Can we stop with the uptime percentages?
Wider audience started to use status pages because the service unreliability became so much more noticeable than before and not the other way around. I never had to use a status page for bear blog or protonmail because i never had and issue with it or just i never noticed.

I am now _required_ to consult status page of github, circleci or MS services etc because i need to know why a build is not passing, why i cannot open a repo, why is my work stalling.

Percentages matter, it is just so much more obvious why they matter when it comes down to important pieces of the internet like github. And i highly doubt the number of 12 hours in the last month. MS has been downplaying the issues they have with GH performance for a while now and i don't think it is time to start to believe them yet. Maintaining these pieces of infrastructure is responsibility and a burden.

Overall i would be careful with "nonlinear significance of numbers near 100%" we are talking gh being well into the 90's this year and one number that infra people are also often being reminded about is that "1% is 3.5 days".

Things are tough for gh people and i feel for them but they are not a startup or a underdog of some sort to receive sympathy in that case.

proxysna··on PlayStation cancels Kojima's PHYSINT, Xbox steps in
He didn't really want to make MGS4 and MGS5 and then still made successful games. Death Stranding franchise is one of the "games that he is well known for" and it is most def not 20+ years old. Dont see your point.
proxysna··on PlayStation cancels Kojima's PHYSINT, Xbox steps in
I mean every time that Kojima made a game it turned out to be something that people talk about for years on. But the second it gets slightly more ambitious investors get their panties in the knot about it even though throughout history Kojima's products made a massive return. This split will also, in my opinion, lead to Kojima losing access to Decima engine, which sucks in a whole different way.
proxysna··on A practical guide to running 8x RTX PRO 6000's
Utterly awful article. R1? Llama3.1? Not being able to serve larger llms on 8(!) RTX pro’s? You can literally run open weight SOTA models with relative ease. Even 4 GPUs get you there with a bit of elbow grease and compression. Pure slop.
proxysna··on Bigos (Polish Hunter's Stew) Recipe Builder
My brother-in-law had this daily for 6 months while being in custody. Now he cant even stand near food carts that serve it. Never really liked it myself, because if there is a choice available, there is most likely a better dish right next to bigos, but one time i had it at a rest stop after a long day of hiking and all i can think of is how amazing was the taste and how well i slept after eating that. I could've sworn the cook put something in it because i am not sure i've ever had a better night of sleep since. Just the most refreshing, warmest and regenerating night of sleep in less than optimal conditions.
proxysna··on AMD acquires Taalas to boost inference performance by etching models in silicon
Really hoped to see their hw out in the wild one day
proxysna··on Proxmox VE now available for ARM64
You can run it on a anything. Now officially. About a year back i had proxmox cluster on 3 orange pi 5+. As long as you have a some sort of Debian it's pretty seamless.
proxysna··on Our position on open-weights models
> My primary concern is the risk that authoritarian governments—not solely the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), although the CCP is clearly the most capable threat—build AI models that are more powerful than those built by the US,

Begging, ugly crying, spitting for that sweet-sweet regulatory capture. These nerds need to be bullied harder.

proxysna··on Decker, a platform that builds on the legacy of Hypercard and classic macOS
Never used HyperCard, but from descriptions and screenshots in the article reminds me a lot of Delphi/Pascal/Lazarus IDE’s. Appeal is understandable, because it is so cool to be snore to from a few lines of code to a clickable intractable executable, that is the sort of Feedback loop that I miss in python and go GUI builders that I’ve used previously, and why I keep c inning back to Lazarus.
proxysna··on OpenTTD 16.0-Beta1
Deploying and building OpenTTD if my favourite exercise when i am trying to learn new CI tool or orchestrator or packaging format. Simple enough, yet fun.
proxysna··on Tesco moving 40k server workloads off VMware amid Broadcom's abusive conduct
Nice. Thanks for the insight!
proxysna··on US holds off blacklisting DeepSeek, more than 100 firms deemed security risks
I've been using deepseek for some development at home and it is really good for the price. It is at the point where i am ok with using it as a tool that i can rely on and not an expensive gadget with flaky uptimes.
proxysna··on Tesco moving 40k server workloads off VMware amid Broadcom's abusive conduct
I'd would assume that this is not a monolithic cluster of 40k vm's but at least tens of clusters. Which puts it in the realm of capabilities of Proxmox.
proxysna··on Tesco moving 40k server workloads off VMware amid Broadcom's abusive conduct
Great time to migrate off VMware. All the migration paths are well-trodden by now, but goddamn 40k vm's. A lot of work ahead.
proxysna··on Alpine Linux 3.24.0 Released
Alpine is my go-to nowadays for everything in my homelab except desktop (I use Void btw), because of how dirty the setup to make GPU's work with musl kernel.
proxysna··on The Cypherpunk Library
Looks really nice, but 10 fps in Firefox.
