qazpot··on The 70% problem: Hard truths about AI-assisted coding
> I think this is the "closing the loop" ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Control_loop#Open-loop_and_clo... ) moment for coding AI.

> All pieces are there, we just need to decide to do it.

Another silver bullet.

qazpot··on 'Hell Joseon' and the South Korean generation pushing to breaking point
I see a lot of parallels in Korean (and other eastern countries) and Indian social expectations.

While Korea has developed economically and has become a modern industrialized country all of it's social mores and expectations are rooted in it's feudal agricultural past.

I think that similar situation will happen in India as well in next 20 years.

Maybe Western modern industrialized, post-industrialized society needs a individualistic culture as well and does not harmonize well with society whose values are derived from the older feudal, gerontocratic agricultural society.

I would also recommend 1st chapter of "Principles Of Computer System Design: An Introduction - Saltzer & Kaashoek" for a more general discussion on complexity in digital system.

qazpot··on 55 GiB/s FizzBuzz (2021)
Thanks for writing this, led me to a rabbit hole.
qazpot··on 55 GiB/s FizzBuzz (2021)
I wrote simple implementations (simple if/else/while and printing to stdout) with no optimizations in Rust, Python3 and C

Rust -> 23.2MiB/s

Python3 -> 28.6MiB/s

C -> 238MiB/s

Does anyone know why Rust's performance is in the same ballpark as Python3.

I thought it would be more closer to C.

qazpot··on A guide for people who want to self-study the basics of computer science

qazpot··on The Curse of Recursion: Training on Generated Data Makes Models Forget
One possible outcome of this is humans stop producing freely accessible digital artifacts like text, code lest they get replaced by machines who can mimic them and which controlled by tech moguls.

Lol, you are calling an act of rebellion a crime.

Now I am begining to understand why people like Moral Relativism, it gets them gotcha moments on internet.

qazpot··on India ruling party's IT cell used AI to show smile on arrested protesters' faces
> I’m wondering if someone can comment on the cultural aspect here. It seems like adding the smiles was intended to discredit the protesters, by somehow suggesting the protest was insincere.

This was to paint them as insincere and implying that protestors are on the payroll of <insert boogeyman here>.

qazpot··on A mental health crisis in science
I think the part about "unrealistic goals" is applicable to a lot of spheres of life and exacerbated by the social media. Social media after all inflicts high expectations and pressure to convert your life into a performance on everyone irrespective of profession, culture, age, country.

And ofcourse the Titans of social media - zuckerberg, chamath, tiktok and 1000s of engineers, PMs will not pay for the harm their engineered products have caused because waters have been muddied enough and no true accounting of the harm can happen.

It is kind of like inventing a new synthetic highly addictive drug which is technically legal but very harmful and you can sell it to everyone.

qazpot··on If You Double-Park and You’re Rich, Should You Pay a Higher Fine?
Should rich people get less jail time because they lose more money because of time spent in jail (per day income is higher) than a poor person.

Should a person with more children get less jail time because more children will be left without a parent as compared to a childless person.

qazpot··on Swearing Is Dumb

qazpot··on Flow-Based Programming, a way for AI and humans to develop together
I think you are taking a very major assumption that LLMs are deterministic infact they are exactly opposite. They are probabilistic systems.

- They do not transpile Rough English to Deterministic English. Infact they do not do any transpiling at all.

- LLMs learn the probabilities of words in the dataset for all contexts from that dataset (context is a ordered set of words). This is called training.

- Once training is done, LLMs can generate text given a prompt and the probabilities that it has learned. The analogy of LLMs being auto-complete on steroids is very apt.

- Whether the text generated by LLMs is factual or not is purely coincidental.

I would highly recommend watching and working though the code (if possible) of NanoGPT by Andrej Karpathy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCc8FmEb1nY

A lot of things which seem like magic about LLMs will get demystified.

Now one can argue that LLMs are showing human like reasoning/intelligence/sentience as an emergent behavior. This is hard to argue against because all these terms are extremely hard to define.

IMO, the only emergent behavior that LLMs are showing is the output they generate looks like it might have been generated by a human which should not be surprising given that LLMs like ChatGPT has trained on a large amount of human written text available on internet.

qazpot··on Anyone else witnessing a panic inside NLP orgs of big tech companies?
> won't take everyone's job, it will just open up new areas for new jobs.

This was true for Industrial Automation when machines automated physical work and humans could do knowledge work.

Now machines are on the verge of automating knowledge there would be no work left for humans.

qazpot··on How to Advance in Your Career as an IC
This article could have been two bullet points.

1. Read the book Staff Engineer: Leadership Beyond the Management Track by Will Larson and identify which archetype you are - Tech Lead, Solver, Architect, The Right Hand (Details are in the book)

2. Find an organization which has the career track for your chosen archetype, find a mentor who has gone through that path.

qazpot··on Natives in Tech asks Apache Software Foundation to change name
Just leaving this here

According to The Apache Software Foundation, its name was chosen "from respect for the various Native American nations collectively referred to as Apache, well-known for their superior skills in warfare strategy and their inexhaustible endurance".[15] This was in a context in which it seemed that the open internet -- based on free exchange of open source code -- appeared to be soon subjected to a kind of conquer by proprietary software vendor Microsoft; Apache co-creator Brian Behlendorf -- originator of the name -- saw his effort somewhat parallel that of Geronimo, Chief of the last of the free Apache peoples.[16][17] But it conceded that the name "also makes a cute pun on 'a patchy web server'—a server made from a series of patches".

qazpot··on 'Planet killer' asteroid found hiding in sun's glare may one day hit Earth
The only problem with the analysis is a single Asteriod striking anywhere on earth can wipe out billions of people.

A powerful earthquake even it hits a large city would wipe out only in millions at worst.

They do not scale the same way.

qazpot··on Engineers should do customer support and success
IIRC wordpress does this for new hires. Everyone spends their first few months in Customer support, which is a nice middle path to the extreme you are suggesting.

This is also good for new hires as they get to a grounding on what matters (customer experience).
