racked··on Building a Quake PC
> As I ranted against the '90s and "how hard it was back then to have access to information", my wife came over the workbench, looked at the HDD, and then calmly informed me the J50 was the pins on the left. Hein, mais comment tu sais ca? Then she flipped the HDD to show me the PCB pins were labeled!

Mr. Sanglard is a lucky man :-)

racked··on Setting up a new PC used to be fun, now it is ad-ridden nightmare
I had my new Win11 PC preinstalled by the vendor and then immediately ran Win11Debloat on it. It's been quite painless that way; not many nuisances except a few OneDrive popups to extinguish and the typical forced reboots after updates.

Have you tried SMPlayer? It's a lot like MPC
racked··on Active listening: the Swiss Army Knife of communication
I bet you're getting plenty of downvotes from the Yanks.

Do elaborate on that first paragraph though please, I'm bursting with curiosity about what makes you see it that way.

racked··on Active listening: the Swiss Army Knife of communication
"The technique works by subverting standard social etiquette. The normal rules dictate that we take turns. I talk about myself, then you talk about yourself, etc. Active listening changes that. You are listening, they are talking. We do not take turns.

You need to work hard to maintain these unusual rules. Your partner will try to give you a turn"

This unwritten rule is not understood by many. There are plenty of people out there that are completely happy to drain you of your energy by talking endlessly about themselves. What I try to do in those situations is to assert my speaking time and if that doesn't change their attitude, it's bye bye, fuck off, go drain someone else.

racked··on Borg – Deduplicating archiver with compression and encryption
I've had an awful experience with Duplicati. Unstable, incomplete, hell to install natively on Linux. This was 5 years ago and development in Duplicati seemed slow back then. Not sure how the situation is now.
racked··on Zoom outage caused by accidental 'shutting down' of the zoom.us domain
Why does it have to be -- ever "googled" something? ;-)
racked··on Show HN: A Hacker News client that only shows YouTube videos
Does it include those from comments? Great videos to be found there, too.
racked··on My imaginary children aren't using your streaming service
And when they do, it always has to be something like "No, thanks". Always with the forced gratitude. Never a good old "No, FUCK OFF" to accommodate me.

racked··on Microsoft removes Windows11 24H2 official support on 8th 9th 10th Gen Intel CPUs
What is MS's end game here? The development cost savings seem not worth it. The only plausible reason I can think of is collision with PC manufacturers to boost sales.
racked··on Passing the Torch on Asahi Linux
Just read KF's post about Hector and while it is frivolous (a lot of "who cares" moments), it is also founded with plenty of evidence. Simple freedom of speech, not hate speech.

Also, I would never have read it if it wasn't for this thread. :-)

racked··on Good engineers are right, a lot
The point the author is trying to make is that those are indeed not the right traits to judge an engineer by.
racked··on Younger cannabis users have reduced brain function, finds largest study yet
It's very true. Having been a heavy user for 4 years in my late teens, I do notice that my memory isn't what it used to be. I'm having to write things down all the time, including people's names and stats.
racked··on Trump prohibits development of US Central Bank Digital Currency
Done.
racked··on Installing OpenWRT on an Unsupported Router
> coreboot's "flashrom" doesn't support SPI NAND flashes, neither exists a suitable applet for the Glasgow, and I didn't want to buy an expensive XGecu >>>T56<<< (my TL866II doesn't support them either).

Would the T48 not be sufficient?

Unfortunately it is not clear exactly what flash chip is used. Only thing the T48 doesn't support is OneNAND according to https://www.bulcomp-eng.com/datasheet/XGecu%20T56,%20T48,%20...

racked··on Linux on Apple Silicon with Alyssa Rosenzweig [audio]
Exactly this. All that work, for reverse-engineering a handful of laptops made by a company whose only desire is to lock its users into its ecosystem and ergonomics. Even more demotivating is that the M1 and the M2 are already superseded.

Similarly, I completely do not understand the popularity of Apple's laptops in this community. Endemic mindless fanboyism.

racked··on All the electricity you'll need for 40 years
So what are these 'whites' supposed to do in your opinion, quit denying their wealth and just go live in a nice suburb, big house, big car? You propose no solution, it's only bitterness.
racked··on All the electricity you'll need for 40 years
What are their reasons for not allowing it?

Sounds stupid on many levels to forbid it.

racked··on Chromium uses web search for .internal TLD instead of opening URL
Having trouble not attributing to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity here...

For Home Assistant for instance, the only reasonable option is .internal - its default .local is not the right TLD to use. [1]

The only ones I've seen are for porn distribution and crypto banter. What do you refer to when saying 'the wrong kind'?

racked··on 555 Timer Circuits
I'm not an expert by any definition of the term, but a book on programming for the Raspberry Pi Pico with Micropython recommends the MCP3008 ADC.
racked··on 555 Timer Circuits
I disagree. I as an adult with zero prior experience with electronics have recently completed the book "Make: Electronics", which contains such experiments, and I got a sense of amazement very much resembling one that a(n) (intellectually curious) child would have. A 555, a couple of trimpots and a speaker can be loads of fun!
racked··on Mistake to take organs from a living person was averted, witnesses say
Thank you, I must have read over it.
racked··on Mistake to take organs from a living person was averted, witnesses say
That is shocking. Unfortunately the article doesn't clearly describe the chain of events. The patient was declared brain dead but later showed signs of life. Did the doctors resign because they suspected foul play - i.e. someone knew the patient was not brain dead but greenlit it anyway - or did they simply quit due to the trauma?
racked··on Winamp deletes entire GitHub source code repo after a rocky few weeks
It's a shame the GitHub repository got attacked by the kind of sexually frustrated perpetually-teenage crowd you normally see on 4chan.

On the other hand, Radionomy's clear incompetence over the years sours me. Having the IP for all those years and laying it to waste, culminating in a half-assed attempt to open source it. It pains me to say as their intentions may be good at least in part, but one has to let Darwin get his way too.

racked··on Migrating from Create React App to Vite
Surprisingly painless, in my experience. Vite is good.
