randac··on Quake – 30th Anniversary Update
Well, a lot of it found a home in Team Arena, but that wasn't particularly well received.
randac··on Kawaii – A Keychain-Sized Nintendo Wii
Look at anything from publisher New Blood Interactive on Steam for a starting point. Mostly retro style FPS from differing eras, but there are a few other game types. Plus you'll struggle to find any that don't have thousands of user ratings in either very positive or overwhelmingly positive brackets.

Gloomwood (first person stealth) and Fallen Aces are a couple of gems still in early access.

randac··on We apologize for the confusion and angst the runtime fee policy caused
The CEO selling is a bit of a red herring.

This covers more of the shenanigans: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOCTSp_U-KI

Apologies for a video link but that's all I have.

randac··on Radioactive spill near Richland WA worse than expected
Simply rephrasing the question would get better responses.

"I'm sure they thought of this, but could someone explain why they don't just divert...?"

randac··on Submarine missing near Titanic used a $30 Logitech gamepad for steering
Also using close to $1m in fuel per trip (according to the CEO), not that it changes your point
randac··on Reddark: Website to watch subreddits going dark
Thread with many replies, the deepest replies end up very squashed right in portrait, it's annoying to read. As is the flag/dead style but that's another matter. Obviously nothing I can't work around.
randac··on Displaying my washing machine's remaining time with curl, jq, and pizauth
The laziest tech equivalence I can think of would be buying a baby monitor and mounting it in the laundry room.
randac··on DeepMind has open-sourced the heart of AlphaGo and AlphaZero
> when that hasn't been true except for a short while after the release

Even that was debatable given the restrictions placed on the version of Stockfish it played.

Not to take anything away from AlphaZero either, self play to reach that level was quite the achievement.

randac··on HP bricking printers remotely if the client's credit card expires [video]
If you pay for a subscription to Audible and accrue monthly credits, they will steal the unused ones back when you cancel the subscription.

Not making a judgement either way, just adding more data.

randac··on “Fun disabled by administrator” (2015)
This looks better in the app -> We're too inept to design a good mobile interface and/or we would like more of your data please.
randac··on 24-core CPU and I can’t move my mouse (2017)
Wow, I've never heard anyone else describe that.. but I had the same on Win95 (iirc) after messing about with the COM port setup too much. You could try to load a website and see there was no transmission going on whatsoever.. but then if you grabbed the mouse and moved it around you would instantly see data transfer happening again and the page would start to load.
randac··on Breaking BIOS: enabling VT-x virtualization support on Acer Aspire One netbook
I dodged the Atom and picked up an Acer 1810tz. 4gb RAM, intel U4100 CPU, ran rings around netbooks at the time and I still use it here and there to this day. Probably the best keyboard I've ever used on such a small device.
randac··on Let's make the web personal again
Welcome to hn in recent years.

The site desperately needs some form of meta moderation.. I've barely scrolled this thread and seen multiple examples already.

randac··on On Mr. Beast and being alone in a circle for 100 days
This is similar to the Rogan interview, but I figured I'd mention it here too.

MrBeast was just on Flagrant with Andrew Schulz for 4 hours, a day or so ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGrk7Mzm4uo

This was also an interesting and fun interview which I expected to skip over fairly quickly but ended up listening to in the entirety. Some discussion over how you would lose something like 3% of viewers if somebody sneezed, went to the toilet, and so on.. Other things to avoid, like any signalling that the video is winding down will lose you a huge chunk of viewers instantly.

randac··on Twitch finally takes action against gambling
Yes. IIRC there were two low level Twitch employees who won something in the giveaway, but I believe they were entered because they performed chat moderation (yes, using the same mod tools normal channel moderators use) for the streamer in question (Trainwrecks). It's being made out like this was some form of bribe, but that seems disingenuous given they have (had, one died, one left the company) no influence over Twitch policies, and the decision to accept gifts (or not) is their responsibility as an Amazon employee either way. Perhaps they have colleagues who they could sway who are involved in policy setting, but that feels like reaching to me.

However take this with a pinch of salt too, I wouldn't like to bet on being fully correct! ;)

randac··on Tell HN: Somebody implemented something I wrote a blog about
This is fine as long as you notify the account holder based on both a failed 2FA OR just ignoring the 2FA prompt rather than making an attempt.

Personally I don't know enough to know if that's the case?

randac··on The worst part of working from home is now haunting reopened offices
> Facebook, Google, etc would not be calling people back to the office which only serves to increase their costs, if they didn’t have the data to back it up

"They must have the data" is a very popular way to appeal to authority lately.

randac··on GDPR enforcer rules that IAB Europe’s consent popups are unlawful
I'd love to know how often a 'reject all' button actually objected to all 'legitimate interest' crap too.

I expected the answer is site and consent management system dependent, so where I really couldn't avoid one of these sites, I'd manually object to all legitimate interest first before pressing it. Such a PITA and probably pointless ultimately, but hey..

randac··on Ask HN: Is the past disappearing on the web?
I have a feeling that OP has used this feature and that it's part of their complaint.

I've been using it for many years by now, and have essentially given up on it recently.

I'd often set for past year/month and get articles, reviews, etc that were clearly dated many years previous. I don't know if the site are responsible for the gaming of search, or Google themselves, but the result is the same. I have some doubt that PC hardware review sites are gaming dates on their old articles, although I accept it could be in their interest to do so too.

randac··on Facing sky-high connection fees, rural Ontarians go off the grid
I think the only module I took that was close to this, for CompSci in UK, was on technical writing.
randac··on The naughty username checking system used by Twitch
I got a CAPTCHA variant not long ago that was along the lines of "U2KYS". Pretty toxic!
randac··on Your CPU may have slowed down on Wednesday
I used InSpectre to disable meltdown/spectre mitigations on my 2600k. Nothing important was stored on it, it was used purely for gaming. It had a significant effect. I would hold my 144 fps cap in some titles but with mitigations on it would fall below frequently.
randac··on Grindr to be fined almost €10M over GDPR complaint
Also the 'reject all' button is often drawn in a greyed out style to make people assume you can't interact with it. The 'accept the status quo' button is always brightly coloured and may as well have blinking arrows pointing at it...

It's honestly absurd the amount of different dark patterns they're using to try to trick users.

randac··on I almost lost my hearing from the lid on the tank of a toilet
This thread is regarding the lid to the toilet cistern, not the toilet lid itself.
randac··on Apple Says It Slows Older iPhones to Save Their Battery Life
> Apple documents that without the battery (i.e. on AC Power) the CPU is underclocked

This is an utterly absurd apology on behalf of Apple, something very common in this thread it seems.

Alternatively, perhaps Apple should sell their high-end model with an appropriately powerful AC adapter, regardless of the absence of the battery?

randac··on Apple Says It Slows Older iPhones to Save Their Battery Life
It also has a headphone jack while being IP67 and is still reasonably thin, which is an insurmountable design feat according to some opinions I've seen here.

"User replaceable" barely does it justice either. I just had the battery in my hands in under 5 seconds easily. People earlier in the thread stating iPhone batteries are easily user replaceable are ridiculous, when the process can take upward of 20 minutes, and can leave the phone temporarily inoperable if any of the multiple connectors aren't quite seated correctly. I'm also intrigued as to where all this imaginary extra weight and bulk is coming from when implementing specifically the S5 battery enclosure design, because having stripped down hundreds of iPhones and dozens of Galaxy variants I just don't see it.

randac··on When devops makes a clock
Trailer, possibly.
randac··on Microsoft now puts ads in Windows 10 File Explorer
Someone on reddit posted that this happens in Enterprise also, which is beyond absurd if true...
randac··on The Dropbox hack is real
> They depend on selling their product to security-savy users, so they will ensure it's quality.

This is a dangerously naive attitude.

randac··on ‘Shadow Brokers’ Leak Raises Question of whether the N.S.A. was Hacked
Hilarious that this was downvoted, with a cowardly lack of discourse as usual.

Please, continue to assume Putin is a stereotypical cartoon villain. One would think users of a site like HN would have at least passing knowledge of Occam's Razor...
