reactspa··on A legal fund to sue SF over housing deadlock
No more personal wells are allowed. The existing ones are grandfathered in (that beautiful invention to keep the elites of the past in power: "grandfathering").

City of Monterey:

Water Meter Waiting List (there are people on there waiting since 2003 for a water meter):

(I guess I should start by contacting everyone on the water meter waiting list...)

Good point: you cannot be approved for construction without a water meter.
reactspa··on A legal fund to sue SF over housing deadlock
I have land in City of Monterey that I have not been allowed to do any construction on because there's a moratorium on new water meter issuances. (Update: One cannot get approved for new construction without a water meter.)

I am still required to pay full property tax on it each year.

If anyone has advice on how I can go about growing a community of people in a similar predicament to eventually engineer a class action suit against the county govt.[1], please share in a reply to this post. (Paging: Peter Thiel.)

[1] on the theory: if you're charging me property tax, then give me a water meter just like my neighbor has. And if I can't do anything productive with this land, then give me a huge discount on the property tax. (I'm not even allowed to park a travel-trailer on it for more than 2 days at a time.)

Markdown question:

I want to take create a chronological journal where I track tutorials I've done (and how well, etc), but I want to add some sort of a tag wherever I feel like so that with a click I can find all my entries related to (say) React, or R (statistics), and so on.

If you're reading this, and have had luck with such a tagging mechanism, please share your solution.

FOSS only, of course.

Someone needs to put together a single-click Docker-Compose-type solution that will work on any Digital-Ocean-type shared host.
reactspa··on US: Drought-stricken states to get less from Colorado River
This will apparently hurt cotton farming in Arizona.

Two questions for HN:

- does anyone know why we do cotton farming in AZ (an apparent desert)? Cotton is one of the most water-intensive crops.

- what's stopping the govt. of California from making drip-irrigation the law? Israel seems to do fine with it.

reactspa··on Show HN: Markdown as web page/site
I was under the impression that using markdown to create html webpages was a common use case, and had been solved. Was I wrong?

(I've used markdown for note taking, not for web pages, hence am asking.)

reactspa··on Look at median, and not mean GDP per capita
I too am interested in the difference between GDP and Income, and my usual sources (e.g. Wikipedia) don't satisfy.

1) Regarding velocity: if the other person quickly spends that same dollar, unless they spend it abroad, wouldn't it end up as someone else's income, domestically? So why should velocity matter?

2) Request you to elaborate your explanation using the example of a real country whose per capita GDP and per capita Income differ substantially.

What does "hedging" mean in this context?
reactspa··on Marc Andreessen says he’s for new housing, but records tell a different story
The only thing surprising here is that he conveyed his views via a public letter.

Such views are usually conveyed over cigars, brandy, and prime rib, in private rooms (where smoking is not frowned at, even in CA) in very expensive restaurants.

reactspa··on On Being Rich-ish: Lessons I learned becoming suddenly middle-class
> Something like 30% of trade ins have negative equity

Could you please clarify what this means. E.g., A car "X" is traded in for a car "Y". X gets a trade-in-value of $2,000. That is, the cost to buy Y is reduced by 2,000. Where does the negative-equity in your point apply here please? Thanks.

reactspa··on I remember feeling derisive about marketing as a young techie
> you will never beat the ROI of sending a CTO a bottle of something fancy

Did you mean:

1) A whiskey company sending a bottle of their whiskey?

or

2) (e.g.) "Microsoft" sending a bottle of whiskey?

The second sounds unethical and it would shock me to know this is common.

reactspa··on Videos released by the Police are no longer welcome on YouTube
Some would argue that this channel was performing a public service by putting police videos in a central place. Rather than the viewer having to traverse various police websites.

So much for YouTube becoming a "public utility."
reactspa··on Ask HN: How did free people in USA thrive in high heat before air-conditioning?
Good catch. I should have taken a minute to google it before saying it was less than a 100 years old. I remembered 1930 as the cut-off year for air-conditioning, for some reason.
reactspa··on Part of India Is on the Verge of Becoming a Complete Surveillance State
This article is a good example of how to take innuendo and declare it as fact to bolster a narrative. It's a journalistic strategy, and it's taught in journalism school.

E.g.:

> In 2021, the Pegasus Project, an investigation by a consortium of international journalists, revealed that the Indian government had been spying on more than 300 people, including journalists, activists, and politicians.

The word: "revealed". It's all innuendo. Nothing was indisputably "revealed". A true example of "revealed" would be the video Hunter Biden filmed, of himself taking a shower with multiple prostitutes while smoking crack. But don't expect to hear about it because it doesn't suit the narrative. This, on the other hand, is innuendo being trotted out as fact.

Last word on this topic: the narrative sketched in this article is "Modi bad." But the evidence is from a state run by a staunch Modi opponent, belonging to a party that is in opposition to Modi's party.

(I think we're allowed to mock super-privileged people of the Left on HN. PG seems pretty libertarian to me. But if my comment crossed a line, I apologize in advance and will remove the offensive portions.)

reactspa··on Feather Wiki: app for creating personal non-linear notebooks, databases, wikis
I did note your ":)", and I agree that compared to a total of 63kb, a 23kb addition can be quite large, but search is too important a feature, and I think it will be worthwhile.

Thank you to the GP for the suggestion to use https://fusejs.io

I wasn't aware that it's easy to implement one's own search engine.
