rfrey··on Formlabs Studio 1 $699 Resin Printer
This thing is all over YouTube, they really backed up the truck to the Influencer Club and started handing out the goods. Lots of people I like and respect have showcased it, like Applied Science, Jeff Geerling, among others.

But although there's a lot of discussion about how large a discount this is from FormLab's 8 billion dollar printers, there is absolutely NO comparison that I can find to other brands! OK, it's a cheaper Bentley - but how does it compare to the Toyota or Honda that we can get down the street? There are loads of options with --on paper-- better specs for half this price or less.

One difference is that Apple has always considered it their job and divine right to tell you how to use your computer, where Windows a d Linux never have.
rfrey··on Canadians are running out of time to oppose Bill C-22
The Green party is not a force in Canadian politics, they have one seat and barring radical events will never have another.

Th Bloc has 21 seats, and has had as many as 54. They would certainly ally with the conservatives. (Not the modern maple maga variety, but old school PC).

Indirect subsidies are an accepted economic concept and well studied. The posts you replied to are obviously talking about indirect subsidies and dismissing them because they didn't say "indirect" everywhere is just sophism.

You don't think there's a difference between recording somebody on the street installing mass surveillance devices and peering into person's window?

I think if you're worried about being harassed by your neighbours if they find out what you do during the day, you should be thinking hard about what you do during the day.

Plenty of people have become alienated from their own family due to blind loyalty to Trump and support for his cruelty. They remain loyal.

There is a lot of variance in the price of cleaning tied to location. Cost of living in the area for sure, but also presence or absence of economic migrants and new immigrants.
rfrey··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
The studies I'm familiar with have tested recall at various intervals, not brain activity.
rfrey··on Is The Economist Always Wrong?
He made money when he was working for other people. He did not make money when he tried to trade off his ideas. That was 25 years ago, since then he just broadcasts his ideas.

No skin in the game, as it were.

If the toilets at all those firms started operating in reverse, very little would get built. The conclusion is that plumbers are extremely important, not that plumbing is de facto engineering.
rfrey··on Scientists reverse brain aging, with a nasal spray
I know lots of writers who have (reluctantly) stopped using em-dashes. Many replaced them with colons, and are now wondering what they will replace colons with.

Yes, but do their publishers need to be compensated for a century after their death?
rfrey··on Google Books (or similar) all book scans – $200k bounty (2025)
We certainly wouldn't want to return to the pre-1976 era, where, as we all know, no books were written.
rfrey··on Scientists reverse brain aging, with a nasal spray
Anybody who still writes using their own mind has stopped using that pattern, along with others. "The thing nobody tells you:" is no longer used by decent writers.

rfrey··on Build Adafruit projects right from Firefox
I think it is uncharitable to say "your convenience". It's more like "your vision as a creator". We're talking about developer intent that isn't possible otherwise. You can say "good, it shouldn't be", but don't characterize it as convenience.

rfrey··on OpenAI is connecting ChatGPT to bank accounts via Plaid
Man, I remember when the common wisdom was that there would NEVER be enough people willing to put their credit card into a web browser to support a business.

I never expected to be nostalgic for those days.

rfrey··on Cursing the government does not fix potholes. Spray-painting them does
Although if a big pothole remains for several years amid many complaints, it's reasonable to think there's no such list. Or there is a list, but it's so long that it might as well not exist.
