richardjam73··on The Functional Programming Hiring Problem
I dabbled in F# which is quite good but I think the future belongs to mainstream languages adopting functional features.
richardjam73··on NVIDIA's new DLSS 5 drops with uncanny AI filters
The backlash against this is so strong that I can see Nvidia canning this version.
richardjam73··on Ask HN: How to Learn C++ in 2026?
I use the Back to Basic videos from CPP con. You can find playlists of these https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NReDubvNjRg&list=PLHTh1Inhhw...

Those are from 2023 but they have others if you search on their youtube page

The Cherno has a intro to cpp series as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18c3MTX0PK0&list=PLlrATfBNZ9...

richardjam73··on "This Is Not the Computer for You" Debunked
I feel that this article just reinforces my view that the original article was correct.
richardjam73··on Ask HN: What is thick black row above top of header?
Its used to indicate that someone of importance to the community has died.
richardjam73··on The L in "LLM" Stands for Lying
Verbosity doesn't equate to correctness.
richardjam73··on ESafety commissioner wins two-day injunction against X over violent content
But it is not really blocked in Australia though it is only geo blocked. People using VPNs can still see it in Australia.
richardjam73··on Ask HN: How to model interplanetary light delays in a game?
I would probably do it via raycasting. You don't need to calculate all of the information sent just one ray per entity (ship, missile). project those rays through the battlefield and see if they collide at the correct time.
richardjam73··on Warn HN: DuckDuckGo is doing AI summaries for search results now?
It is appears to be pulling random text segments from the page because I got text that included Steam Communities censorship. The text appears exactly the same as on the page so it is not autosummarised.
richardjam73··on Scotland apologised for forced adoptions – but this happened throughout the UK
Happened in Australia as well. Makes me wonder just how widespread it was.

richardjam73··on Who will build new search engines for new personal AI agents?
"hey go book me a place for drinks tonight in Peckham, it needs to have food and not be insanely busy"

The information needed to answer this request often just doesn't exist on the web. Often the true answer is obscured by lies. Personal agents don't have the ability to perform due diligence in a web of lies.

richardjam73··on Apex Legends finals postponed after suffering unprecedented hack
Those exploits require a client to connect to a hacked server, but Apex Legends has dedicated servers. You can't just randomly hack a client on the network. So it is not likely an RCE unless EA themselves got hacked.
richardjam73··on Command And Conquer: Red Alert 2 remaster on the horizon
"After the launch of the first C&C Remastered Collection,"

I read that to mean that the C&C Remastered Collection is of the first games (C&C 1 and Red Alert 1) not that it is the first Remastered Collection (Remastered Collection 1).

Unfortunately this is just a rumour.

richardjam73··on The Simplest Math Problem Could Be Unsolvable
I would have thought that the actual simplest math problem was to prove that 1+1=2 not the collatz conjecture.
richardjam73··on Soviet Union 2.0 (2017)
If you simplify things enough, then those things will tend to look similar.
richardjam73··on Dune Part 2 Response Is Less About the Movie and More About Hollywood's Problems
Dune Part 2 is an excellent adaption but all adaptions of Dune are ultimatley inferior to the books. I was actually disappointed when I was watching it but I could see how it was trying to tell the story. The story is just way too complex and has too many things going on to adapt to movies or tv.
richardjam73··on Criticism of Computer Game Journalism
"While 80s and 90s computer game journalism can be criticized for this and that shortcoming, at least it led the way and broke new ground. Some of it was even great. In terms of form, content and integrity, 80s and 90s computer game journalism is head-and-shoulders above the gibberish that is all-too-common in the 2020s."

I read a lot of game reviews from the 80s and 90s and most of it is not very good. Writers were not given enough time or space to do a proper job. I think the author of this piece is letting nostalgia override rationality here. They do make a good point about rubbish being more visible today. However this can often be mitigated by good curation by the user. Curation you had to apply in the past but just in different ways

richardjam73··on Ask HN: How the AI companies collect data to train models?
They use datasets like common crawl.
richardjam73··on LLM-generated docs are usually worthless
I remember older Microsoft documentation being just like that.
richardjam73··on Apollo calls AI a 'bubble' worse than even the dotcom era
I think there is a disconnect between what Gen AI can do for businesses and what businesses think Gen AI can do for them.
richardjam73··on The first microcomputer: The transfluxor-powered Arma Micro Computer from 1962
I don't really consider the lack of usage of a microprocessor to discredit a machine from being a microcomputer. To me the definition is more about the size of the system and the way it is used. The real issue to me is the integration of the system into a larger machine. A microcomputer is standalone but this Arma computer is not.

The celestial data processor they made a prototype of would fit my definition of a microcomputer. Another thing I forgot is that a microcomputer needs to be programmable by the end user otherwise I would consider it a calculator. So the celestial is more of a calculator.

richardjam73··on Intel CPU is faulty and has Core errors. It's not your GPU, its your CPU
Just don't overclock your equipment.
richardjam73··on Stuck in the Middle with the Fujitsu FM-8
Noel's Retro lab has a video about a Spanish FM-7 https://youtu.be/4LTMYocpE9M
richardjam73··on Pentagon launches nuke-spotting satellites amid Russian space bomb rumors
Why were these satellites only just launched now? Why not just deploy after construction?
richardjam73··on Am I the only one that think Firefox has been getting a lot more buggy lately?
No haven't encountered any bugs or lock ups at all.
richardjam73··on Star Trek: The original computer game
I played this on an ICL minicomputer system in the late 80s. I also remember there being Hamurabi and a horse racing game. I think the programs where written in BASIC.
richardjam73··on Ask HN: Jupyter notebook for "non-technical" people – does this exist?
What about Excel? It has natural language driven data analysis.
richardjam73··on Apologize to Peter Thiel
It is a real academic discipline. Something taught under business management.
richardjam73··on The history of Digital Research's Gemdos for the Atari ST (1986)
The Atari ST operating system is kinda divided into two parts. GEMDOS/BIOS/XBIOS is the underlying system that GEM GUI uses. GEMDOS is roughly equivalent to Microsoft's DOS. You can write applications that don't use the GUI.
richardjam73··on What made Earth a giant snowball 700M years ago? Scientists have an answer
Chemical processes in rock can store or release gases. Erosion can expose rocks leading to this occurring.
