rightbyte··on Hex Raises $100M
I dunno. Maybe the value is in the data siphon from gullible companies trusting Hex with their data.
rightbyte··on Decompiling Fast Food Tycoon 2: Drawing the World
The move to 3d sim games was such a mistake for the industry. Pixelart was way better at the time. It took like 15 year to make it look good again and that with cartoony cell shading anyway.

> but this ain't exactly Mickey Mouse. Even Mickey Mouse is out of steam by now.

Hasn't Mickey Mouse been out of steam since the 50s? He is a normal guy and you need to base any short about someone else to make it interesting. Like the squirrels or Donald Duck...

rightbyte··on America has lost 200k of jobs in media, film and the arts. How much is AI?
If I remember correctly Stan realized that the old things he liked were shit in that episode. Anti-nostalgia. OP describes the opposite.
rightbyte··on America has lost 200k of jobs in media, film and the arts. How much is AI?
No way. It is not sampling bias. Big budget movies have gotten worse script wise compared to the 90s and 00s.

The scene workers have gotten better though. And there are a lot of good movies being made still, but not by the mainstream industry that used to really deliver.

You seem to imply current day Disney has some sort of ownership over prior art.
rightbyte··on How Quickly Can the DoD Rebuild and Recast the Munitions Industrial Base?
"Handwaving opportunity". I think you hit the nail there. I will steal that. The opportunity to label critique as treason also make corruption and bad policy in general go rampant. I think that is the strongest factor.

I don't know how people can have such a romantic view. Like read some fictional books on the matter. All quiet on the Western front or Catch 22.

Back cutting and corruption goes rampant and the worst kind of people profiteer while losers are slaughtered.

rightbyte··on How Quickly Can the DoD Rebuild and Recast the Munitions Industrial Base?
The gamified precurment system is just neoliberalism taken to the extreme. I mean Goodhart's Law is a warning not a guide.

When the dust settles I think the precurment system will be seen as detrimental. Military power structures need to be boring such that it doesn't eat it self.

rightbyte··on I never authorized an integration that scans my secrets
Yeah except the web browser and mail client I wish the default would be no open sockets for you ever.

Unless it is a distribution policy to respect privacy by default it is just to much work to keep up with all the leaks the system might have.

How about just handing out plates over the counter to the customers. But then again McDonalds have table service now so what do I know.

Your dream requires only you to have that power though.

I spend maybe 12h a year cleaning the bathroom and the dishwasher is a robot. How is that a market to keep dozens of harmonic drives operational. Unless there is some "post scarcity" there is no way it will be common place.
rightbyte··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
Yes. Straight up no roadblocks in two years. County level. I assumed I would have to fight tooth and nail for years and be manouvered out by some old guard all the time. It was nothing like I imagined.

Disengagment among voters and inactive party members towards active party members.

Trying to get engagement is like pulling teeth. You could be in a commitee deciding a thing, inviting the public to a meeting discussion how the thing should be done. Some of the few who show up complain that you are not changing the thing and just talk. Then you change the thing and suddenly, when it is too late to change the decision without a lot of hassle, there is way more discussion about the thing and complaints on how it is done, from people that are not aware of the trade offs or prior discussion or the whole picture.

Very frustrating. (Be aware of that the story is somewhat hyperbolic to make a point. Also, yes, Goomba fallacy).

I think the main problem is that way too few people are active in politics compared to way back. There are like no channels to reach out and too little every day discussions.

rightbyte··on Americans' social activity has steeply declined in the past 30 years
I agree.

There is a need for the word 'cringe' for wannabe, fake, dishonest, superficial etc. expressions that are embarrassing. But it is way over used and should not be used on people who are trying to mock them. It is way too easy to be a critique.

rightbyte··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
I was deeply cynical about politics until I joined a party. The idiots hid when I was around. The boomers in the nomination commitee were throwing posts at me. It was surrealistic and nothing like I imagined. Then I realized something even worse. There are no cabal of idiots. The older generation is not holding on to power. (YMMV ofc). It is some sort of deeper systematic problem with disengagement. And the angry mob knocking on the door really are idiots.

How does alcohole trigger anxiety and depressive episodes for you? When I drink I get calm. Did that change at some point for you? Like, instead of drinking with friends you used it alone in the dark or something?

Wondering if I need to look out for something...

rightbyte··on Why is every rationalist blog post way too long?
Sure I agree.
rightbyte··on Why is every rationalist blog post way too long?
Yeah I think it is some form of missplaced reductionism. No information versus perfect information then argue for perfect information.

I wrote in a sibling post that they like fascism because any dispute can be reduced to and solved by beating the counterpart to death with sticks.

rightbyte··on Why is every rationalist blog post way too long?
When I was younger I kinda liked edgy topics and stances for the sake of being edgy. I can easily see how self identified rationalist people that want e.g. racial superiority to be true persuade them self into believing that by looking at economical outcomes and crime statistics handwaiving away historical circumstances and the pressure on the bottom rungs of society which are in the bottom be design.

Their leaning towards fascism is some sort of reductionism for these people I think. In essence political violence make the perpetrators more powerful than if they were nice playing liberals given the same popular support. Thus fuscism. Q.E.D.

Way too little focus on second or third order effects.

Rightwing radicals that 10 to 30 years ago would say they are libertarians are now fascists instead. It is really strange to witness. I think there is a lack of focus on second or third order effects. It is just problem and superficial cause. How hard can it be, just do it, etc.

rightbyte··on Why is every rationalist blog post way too long?
Sufficient information, not perfect information.

> It can even be cringe to some when someone like yourself acts as instigator

Yes it can feel cringe but I would argue we need to just accept it as prosocial and not cringe. We are cringe for thinking normal social things are cringe.

Like, I would probably have thought OP was after my money like 5 years ago. But now I would just assume good faith.

I think "pretend believing" lies for the cause is bad for policy on a group scale.

Even if you know they are lies it is probably quite bad to pretend they are not since a group can't pretend to believe something in my opinion.

In aggregate it leads to a chain of decisions that are built upon the lies being true ...

rightbyte··on Scandinavia's first farmers slaughtered hunter-gatherer population, DNA suggests
Yeah I guess we should be happy for the hotlink to the article at least.
rightbyte··on Scandinavia's first farmers slaughtered hunter-gatherer population, DNA suggests
The article is very much making up conclusions not present in the work cited. There were no "wipe outs" or "total turnovers".

Probably some sort of jingoist advocating ethnic cleansing writing articles like this.
