rini17··on My psychophysics as a bilateral cochlear implant user
I understood that they are able to hear pure base tones at higher frequencies. But once they are modulated quicker than 70 Hz (implant electrodes are switched more quickly than that) then it turns into white noise. That would fit with the "all voices are the same" description where everything is reduced to base frequency, without harmonics.
rini17··on sshole
Goalposts are fine. If crypt did return union type, C still allows cowboy programmers to straight extract the char* without any check whether it's valid. So we'd end up in exactly the same situation.
rini17··on DoorDash to acquire Instacart
FTFY: At the time noone was buying windows because they pirated it.
rini17··on DoorDash to Acquire Instacart
IE was not really free. You still had to buy Windows.
rini17··on The US added a record 20.2 GWh of battery storage in just 3 months
> This does not match the observed reality.

Observed by whom? For example this shows no change in overall trend.

rini17··on Autocrystals: aperiodic, self-organizing, new after crystals and quasicrystals
Interesting and the illustrations help but still very dense with jargon. Right from the start "autocrystal is an extreme point of the body of window statistics"...what?

Probably only intended for mathematicians.

rini17··on I don't understand quantum physics (2018)
Classical physicists had conceptual difficulty when something stopped behaving as "body" even macroscopically. For example when they tried to determine coefficient of friction of pure coper, throughly cleaned, in vacuum to prevent any oxidation, the surfaces cold-welded together. The copper did not get the memo that it is supposed to be two physical bodies.
rini17··on How Postgres DELETE can actually scale
The index problem is interesting, maybe indexes should be updated synchronously at DELETE time? Guess there's architectural reason why postgres can't do that. I'd try to do it manually, by adding "deleted" column to both table and index whether it's performant(edit: that copies whole row so not likely).
rini17··on C for Rust programmers
Reading the replies...basically all kinds of learned helplessness :(
rini17··on C for Rust programmers
I respectfully but firmly disagree that having buffer length information available for a pointer is "extraneous".
rini17··on C for Rust programmers
I see, checking buffer boundaries for heap allocated pointers is very exotic usecase in C. /s
rini17··on C for Rust programmers
My biggest bewilderment with C is that malloc has to store the buffer size otherwise free could not work...but nobody in decades thought to make this information accessible to the programmer! If you want to keep track of buffer bounds in C, you have to do it artisanally. Despite it's, in most implementations, stored right there next to the data and thus in L1 cache already.
rini17··on Great Dirhombicosidodecahedron ("Miller's Monster")
You might like recent Numberphile videos on youtube about noble polyhedra that were figured out by 17 year old. There's an interview with him too where you can see what is the person like.
rini17··on ADHD, autism or complex trauma? [pdf]
So what if few people started to "misperceive themselves" as ADHD? Why it's considered a reason for panic?

The increased awareness genuinely helps to many others. I suspect there's widespread denial do be untangled, too.

rini17··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
Hard to get sincerely engaged when the genuine achievement is surrounded by insanity like mars colonization or gigawatt datacenters in orbit, both in a decade. Oh and I even saw spacex touted as anti-DEI success story...
rini17··on Stop making swap partitions—use swap files instead
zswap is back in kernel?

Edit: seems I got confused there, only frontswap layer was removed, and zcache

rini17··on Stop making swap partitions—use swap files instead
Use zram instead. This from crappy 8G RAM multimedia/browsing minipc I'm on right now. The SSD is quite slow and browser is memory hungry so it was an improvement from on disk swap.

    $ zramctl
NAME ALGORITHM DISKSIZE DATA COMPR TOTAL STREAMS MOUNTPOINT
    /dev/zram0 zstd 3G 482.9M 86.7M 91.8M 4 [SWAP]
rini17··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
The sad irony of "Share this post on..." with neat list of all the services doing exactly what the post warns against. They can and often are already used by police state.
rini17··on Curl: Nobody Wants to Work with Windows
Since curl has minimal non-copyleft license, Microsoft can just use it as is.

However seems they lost capability to properly maintain anything, most obvious problems will be patched with AI crap at best.

rini17··on Clarity didn't work, trying mysterianism (2012)
At first glance it can work only by completely disabling the meaning-seeker part of the wearer's personality. Ennui and existential/absurd feelings can't be resolved by indulgence.

Would it make Sisyphus happy without bypassing the implied will of gods that he shall be forever fully conscious in order to suffer? Someone pls give the earring to poor dude.

rini17··on OpenPrinter
Nope. Some even refuse to print black and white when yellow ink tuns off.
rini17··on What Happened to the Fight for the Internet?
I personally burned out. Yes free internet was helpful when I was discovering my gay sexuality. Now it hypercharges the cult of youth and beauty, making it impossible to date.

Yes, I was great advocate of self hosting, till due to combination of ADHD and other stuff my domain expired and was taken by squatter. And the incessant DDoSing.

And the tone-deaf arguments completely ignoring that there are bad people on the internet too. Talking about online anonymity when google has most of your email even if you don't use it. And Cloudflare has most of your traffic, unencrypted.

rini17··on Age verification is just a precursor to automated attribution of speech
Repercussions happen all the time. That nothing happened in this one case does not prove or disprove anything.
rini17··on Age verification is just a precursor to automated attribution of speech
You don't have the right to say anything NOW already. Please wake up.
rini17··on Age verification is just a precursor to automated attribution of speech
Yep, pretending we have anonymity online is a nonsense.
rini17··on Age verification is just a precursor to automated attribution of speech
By painting everything so black and white you're doing propaganda too, are you aware?
rini17··on Age verification is just a precursor to automated attribution of speech
Freedom of expression is not absolute and never was.

Should everyone just shrug off anonymous hoaxes and hate speech?

rini17··on Hellishly Slow Level 13 Deflate Compression
What do you think the actual bandwidth speed on the voyager or new horizons is. You are spending lot of time sending the data anyway.
rini17··on Seawater batteries for energy storage, desalination and carbon sequestration
Does it solve the brine problem? Usually the seawater must be heavily treated first before desalination and the resulting brine causes ecological problems when discharged.
rini17··on British Columbia, Time Zones, and Postgres
If you don't understand what the library is doing, and blindly put in local time without any consideration, you will get bitten someday. And all libraries use the same timezone database/logic anyway and run into same issues the author describes.
