The boat views only use the OpenStreetMap `boat` tag. If a section of river is missing from WWM.org, then it's likely the tag is missing from the OSM waterway. You can fix that!

(I made WaterwayMap.org) The data is 100% from OpenStreetMap. I only have to deal with 1 dataset. I suspect people have imported data from Massachusetts into OSM, hence why you see the edge. You can edit OSM to connect things up yourself.

The data is 100% from OpenStreetMap. That map only looks at things with the `canoe` tag in OSM. There are a lot of waterways in OSM which do not have this tag. If you know of missing data, you can just edit OSM and it'll show up on WWM.org tomorrow!

(I'm the creator). There's a few views which will bring in _named_ streams, the `waterway` & `name` tag views. I tried to calculate it with any waterway tag, which would include unnamed streams, but my computer ran out of memory. Maybe later.

Lots of people discovering OSM through this, which is great. This sort of tool is new, so we're all just fixing up lots of little tagging & topology mistakes which were hard to spot.

A server capable of hosting a minutely updated global OSM tileserver costs about €100 per month on Hetzner. That's not nothing, but “crazy” it is not.

The tile servers were under massive load, and massively negatively affecting performance. Many people were not happy

That's for the website tiles. If a transit authority is using OSM data, they would download & process it directly themselves, and hence this doesn't apply at all.

Huh? On the OSM.org website you can use Graphhopper or OSRM routing engines. Both are not "tech demos", but proper real routing engines for real world use. They are hosted by volunteers, so you shouldn't rely on them to be free for everyone for ever. If you want to build a business on them, both OSRM & Graphhopper are open source & self hostable

The OSMF is currently working on updated Attribution Guidelines, which should go some way to address some of this, and will probably adopt something within the next month or two.

So the situation is currently fluid.
