rootlocus··on Nordwand Mono – A monospace font for coders and adventurers
It's not completely different. Look at other fonts (e.g. comic sans) to see what "completely" means. Norwand is a little wider and the middle line is shorter. 28% seems a fairly accurate measurement. It's almost one third different for just the middle descender.
rootlocus··on Nordwand Mono – A monospace font for coders and adventurers
It's 99% JetBrains Mono from my quick comparison. I can barely see the difference except for $&# and a few others.

LE: Ok, so it's a little more different that JetBrains Mono as this comparison shows https://claude.ai/artifact/HPiALZ7AZ2f5FxSZtcTdNa

rootlocus··on Show HN: Guitoro, a virtual guitar you strum with your keyboard
This isn't about coding. I've been yapping about architecture and design for a decade and I'm seeing LLMs produce significantly cleaner architecture than most developers I've worked with.

This, I think, is great product design. More than babysitting the code, it's about hammering the experience until it's as useful, ergonomic and delightful as possible for the user.

Very much looking forward to it, the app is awesome!
rootlocus··on AI is a tool and using it well takes skill
And this on top of the economic apocalypse of removing a lot of jobs and not creating any new ones within a society that doesn't seem to function without money flowing.
rootlocus··on Show HN: Quake ported to safe Rust, playable in browser

It was indeed human assisted.

rootlocus··on Living off-grid: Hundred Rabbits
Society is not "modern society". Humans have always lived in tribes and there are significant advantage to working together. Even off-grid it's much more comfortable, and more can be achieved by living in a community rather than isolated.
rootlocus··on Small programming tricks
Why just one each day then? Why not a shared knowledge base? Do you start with a "bag of tricks" and then hand them out one by one each day to remind people you're the guy with the bag of tricks?

"Oh, yeah, I know a cool trick, but y'all have to wait until tomorrow to find out what it is."

"Look! It's a way to evaluate SQL expressions with a select with a from! Oh, you already knew about it?"

I have nothing against sharing knowledge, especially when seeing someone else do something that can be done better. But just leaving daily breadcrumbs to remind people you're the guy that teaches random trivia feels like attention seeking.

rootlocus··on When code is a maze, smart developers make maps (2025)
I am 100% guitly of anthropomorphizing LLMs, sorry.
rootlocus··on When code is a maze, smart developers make maps (2025)
The most WTF comments are the ones that describe how the code looked during a rewrite session with no commits. It writes bad code, I ask it to rewrite it, and it leaves a comment saying why the previous implementation was bad, with no history in git of the previous implementation.

Edit: changed the LLMs pronoun to it.

Or something, I don't remember...

rootlocus··on Fine, I'll build my own text editor
They're asking about a reaction. "What did I say wrong?" is a valid question IMO, even if wrong is subjective, it's part of the question.
rootlocus··on How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
OP posted his rollercoaster tycoon inspired simulator that explained how chips are fabricated. Comments were full of people pointing out inaccuracies and hallucinations.

The problem with LLM explanations of unknown topics is that you literally cannot determine how right or wrong it is. I usually ask LLMs to bring references and they almost always admit they pulled random shit out of their ass and quickly appologize when evidence to the contrary surfaces.

You can focus on elevator music, doesn't make it not elevator music.
rootlocus··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
Because that html page needs a full browser to render and browsers have accumulated decades of bloat for everything from webgpu to drm. There's a reason we can't write new web browser from scratch, and why some people are excited for protocols like gemini that you can hack a user agent over a weekend.
rootlocus··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
10 apss using 100mb each plus 600mb shared use less ram than 10 apps using 200mb each.
rootlocus··on Our position on open-weights models
> My primary concern is the risk that authoritarian governments—not solely the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), although the CCP is clearly the most capable threat—build AI models that are more powerful than those built by the US, and use them to achieve permanent military superiority or perpetrate incredibly deep repression of their own people.

There's not much stopping US from becoming an authoritarian regime, and the US is already using AI against its own citizens.

rootlocus··on Fields Medals 2026
If 0.0000125% of the population understands "the general ideas" I wouldn't call it accessible.
rootlocus··on I regret migrating to Codeberg
I have ~100 repos on github and only a few of them with LLM assistance. Aside from a few comments and a PR here and there throughout the years nobody cares about them. I have to assume it's the same for the majority of developers.
rootlocus··on OpenAI and Anthropic unite against open-weight AI risks to their bottom line
There's a reason we have expressions like "train of thought". Going from one idea to another is pretty much how we think. Much like going from one token to another.

rootlocus··on Kimi K3, and what we can still learn from the pelican benchmark
According to some benchmarks has the coding capability of Opus at the price of Sonnet, supposedly will be open weights and is not subject to random trade wars with allied states.

Competition is always good.

rootlocus··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
As someone with very little knowledge of economics, I played with the idea of writing a kind of wealth simulator, where money acts as voltage and keeps the economy running. It would allow you to eliminate jobs and replace them with AI and see how the circuit starves population groups which in turn cascade to other segments of the economy.

I never got to design a good representation of the entire ecosystem to simulate (external pressure, debt, military and technological advancements, international soft power, etc.).

Im constantly surprised by the disk size required by rust builds. It takes over 50G to compile zed IIRC.
