routelastresort··on NixOS is making me less afraid
I use nix-darwin and nix on CachyOS (and pretty much everything else, including a little NixOS for fun), daily.

I can confirm all of your comments, and someone will come up with something similar that's easier on the eyes.

routelastresort··on AI is less regulated than milk, says Microsoft president
I'd wager $1 that Microsoft, Bill Gates, et al. would have opposite public takes on AI if they had directly innovated instead of just having investments in other companies and datacenter infrastructure. A bubble is a bigger risk for them. Amazon and Google will catch up on some level on LLMs but I don't have the same faith in MSFT: just look at the failings of Azure for a clue.
routelastresort··on Calculate your p[DOOM], An interactive article to think critically about AI risk
Thanks for the tip - I have "Reclaiming Conversation" by the same author but I need to reclaim some time to read it!
routelastresort··on Sorry, I'm in a meeting
I'm always on the lookout for more MCP servers and skills but it's hard to get past the Claude / ChatGPT one-shot website effect. Skills like Humanizer and avoid-ai-writing help get rid of some of the worst memes, like LLM's incessant love of counting-things-as-a-service (who cares that there are 3 widgets, 10 gadgets, and 37 color schemes???). I also know you didn't type those unicode arrows on a keyboard...

It's one thing to see these tropes on a site like this, but I see them all the time on well-funded startups and even established companies. I have my own stack for getting around this but I'll bet we see more Show HN tooling to fix this very common problem in the near future.

routelastresort··on Calculate your p[DOOM], An interactive article to think critically about AI risk
For me, the biggest risk to personal relationships is owning dogs for the first time. AI might have confirmation bias and glazing galore (prompting skill issue, tbh), but pets are giving humans an even bigger run for their money. That being said, as a neurodivergent person I can appreciate just how much impact AI companions will have on younger generations who grow up with them around.

I've been a fan of Jesse Richardson's work like his School of Thought non profit which distributes free critical thinking resources that are published under Creative Commons Licenses. Personal favorite: "yourlogicalfallacyis"

I have a lot of friends and family who are paralyzed by fear of AI and could (possibly) benefit from this

routelastresort··on Do We Have Fable? Claude Fable 5 Subscription Status
Yeah, there's no way I would ever do that. I'm not too worried - it's all hype. The standard MAX subscription will have this level of performance in 2026. I don't believe it's that much different from Opus (I was getting downgraded on one of my sessions and it didn't seem to make a bit of difference). This is all project-based work and not moonshot one-shot prompts, fwiw.
routelastresort··on Show HN: Davit, a Apple Containers UI
In addition to memory saver that another person replied about, Docker Desktop also has an MCP server functionality and marketplace (almost all free) and huge AI focus. You can hardly compare it to the others at this point.

I was doing the following at the same time on my MBP this week:

* running a bunch of containers + MCP servers for Claude and Codex on Docker Desktop

* heavily using Claude Code with Fable and packer to build cloud marketplace images

* having Codex write some tests and git flows and reviewing the work in vscode

* automating a character in a Wine-based 1st party RPG in the background running at full resolution

* watching anime on Plex in between Claude Code prompts

It's all about your machine. Docker Desktop is not my worry and if you're a Dev you should have a nice laptop with 32-64GB or more, Apple Silicon Max CPU, etc. This goes for Fusion or UTM also if you want to run a Linux Desktop.

I use docker CE with all container/tui interfaces on all of my Linux systems, but Docker Desktop is nice for macOS or Windows. I almost forgot about Docker Desktop's Gordon, and the AI assistant will do things like analyze your Dockerfile or compose.yml. Super handy.

routelastresort··on Do We Have Fable? Claude Fable 5 Subscription Status
I personally thought we only had Fable until tonight so now I'm blazing through tomorrow. I'm somehow still only at 22% because I was late to the game!
routelastresort··on Basically Everyone Should Be Avoiding Docker
Containerization is so widespread... from almost every single programming book and beginner class to the foundation for most of the Internet running today. As a technology, it's very easy to teach. I suggest keeping an open mind with relevant and ubiquitous technology and at least coming up with a compelling alternative for any of the use wildly popular use cases that have made it commodity tech at this point.

Lack of real moderation and reddit tier opinions like this are why I no longer visit this site on a daily or even regular basis.

routelastresort··on Purchase and manage domains directly through Bluesky
90% of my timeline is on Threads is all stuff I don't even follow, while Bluesky is exactly what I ask for. Decentralized platforms are the only way to go, even if it's the centralized version and vision. The Zucc way of ramming (overly) suggested content and ads down your throat will die if there are alternatives.
routelastresort··on The Big List of Engineering Management Resources – March 2022
Some of it absolutely seems like fluff or stating the obvious. That being said, the majority of the organizations out there do not walk the walk. Especially in product management, the actual product or output lacks a soul or purpose. I'd say that the majority of traditional companies and startups all suffer from this problem.

I've even worked at places with successful products where this mindset is missing, and the success is by accident or proxy to more solid endeavors.

Alignment with vision matters too. Too many companies are like many-headed hydras, where a role like Engineering SREs understand the value proposition and missing pieces of a product or offering better than the actual product management team and executive sponsor.

It's easy to say it's remedial, but it's more difficult for companies to actually live it and be successful because of it. Source: I seen't it.

routelastresort··on Thoughts on the Late 2016 MacBook Pro
The good thing that can come of this would be the resurgence of the Linux desktop. Apple just crossed the line for me (<32GB, no SSD upgrade, messing with the keyboard). I'll miss the almost perfect trackpad, but there's no way I'll support these choices.
routelastresort··on Thoughts on the Late 2016 MacBook Pro
I tried using a really fast and expensive 128GB card as extended storage. They're pretty much unusable, slower than a fast USB3 stick, and less practical than a Samsung T1 SSD or something like that.

I don't mind the lack of an SD slot, but I won't buy another Macbook Pro until there's 32GB of memory. I have a late-2013 Haswell MBP with an OWC-upgraded SSD, and I prefer it over my work computer, a 32GB maxed-out Thinkpad running Linux... in pretty much every aspect.

I can no longer drink, due to medical issues. I'd still go out with my team for the bonding, and probably just leave early every time. I really like how the Chef Community Summit has drinking and dry events, like Game Night. Making inclusivity a goal is fun for everyone!

I would buy you gold if there was HN equivalent. In all seriousness, this is something I think about on a daily basis. The need for more/tiresome administration leads to promoting more people to moderate, and they a) might be moderating too many things simultaneously, or b) might bring unnecessary micromanagement or other traits to the mix. Here's hoping multiple site types get it right!

Wow, let me say that if you're even kind of thinking about Ansible, you should star that. There's some very good use of vars going on, and I'm going to use some of these examples to improve my playbooks. Thanks! If you're thinking about using Ansible in any capacity, star/fork this project!
