s_dev··on How to compromise your system with a job interview
What if your laptop is broken? You should be restricted from getting a job? What about if you just landed in the US and didn't want to have to present it to the authorities to scan and plan on buying a new one because they are cheaper there. What about if a family member was currently using it. There are plenty of valid reasons why you might not have a laptop in general or at the moment in your life.

Where is the corresponding EU announcement?

A quick Google produces nothing. Fishy.

s_dev··on Deus Ex creator Warren Spector is retiring from game development
I'm not sure this is sad news but I guess is news or at least some milestone, loved Deus Ex and Warren Spector but he's old, has money, why not retire? Congrats to him on the great career and hopefully he enjoys his retirement.
s_dev··on Incident with Github.com
What if we're not angry and just perplexed? Do we calm down further or can we still ask questions?
s_dev··on Incident with Github.com [resolved]
I recall reading years ago that cloud services were expected to run with a reliability of 3 or 4 '9's and that if they didn't competing services would quickly overtake them in adoption. The industry was supposed to be that cut throat.

Has big tech reached a similar status like banks in that they are "too big to fail" i.e. when they do fail we all just look the other way and say: "well everyone else is out too". Didn't someone recently calculate that GitHub is running at 95%? For comparison the Irish Rail service which is not reliable has 80% of it's trains run on time.

This seems absurd and really challenges a lot of ideas I had about big tech and cloud infrastructure. GitHub seems to have remained the dominant player relative to GitLab etc.

s_dev··on Europe's scorched landscapes seen from space after summer heatwaves
Same in Ireland. I think the country grass is fields or near woodlands or rivers is still holding on to its green but urban grass in parks is scorched. I've never seen this before.

Ireland is fundamentally a wet country and always has been.

s_dev··on Codex in ChatGPT desktop app for Linux is now in preview
Linux users have stronger preferences for the terminal than either Windows or macOS users. Even the same person will use the terminal more in Linux than the other two!
s_dev··on Lovable raises $400M Series C
Lovable is well suited to take over from Wix, Squarespace, Wordpress ... any static websites or simple apps that amount to a shop front. It's a market most serious software developers don't care about but still needs to be serviced and catered to.

This is because even in most serious tech companies the main website is considered marketing rather than part of the product.

s_dev··on More than 10 firms pay up to $100k a month for access to Truth Social posts
Was the Union army complicit in the crimes of the Confederacy by simply allowing them to drop their arms and walk away as well? The world is complicated and full of nuanced takes depending on context. That said:

>If a rival political party takes power in 2029 and they decide to do nothing about this, are they complicit?

Like this really does read as: I still blame the Democrats for the crimes of the Republicans.

The ultimate authority here is the US voters and they have chosen poorly again and again. They are complicit for sure as they chose both to empower Republicans and tie the hands of the Democrats with impossible standards.

s_dev··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
What's more mental you talk to any Germans about deprecating their Nuclear power stations they will bang on about their plan for renewables and then you read these sorts of headlines.

What the hell is happening over there? Why can't they get 'energy' despite being a scientifically literate nation. France has a far superior energy policy so it's not like you even have to travel beyond a few miles to see a wildly different price for electricity. At this rate French electricity will be half the price in a few years compared to German electricity. Germany is making mistake after mistake on energy. From Russian dependence to Nuclear scepticism to now accepting money to not build renewables.

All software to an extent is a model map of some real world phenomena. The limitations of which can actually be advantageous, a good example is why games with poor graphics can be so immersive.

s_dev··on 'I want to rejoin the EU Brexit has been a disaster' – Andy Burnham
It won't happen. I was against Brexit, but now that it's happened it's better that the UK stays on the outside.

The mood in the EU is that after Hungary, we don't need Eurosceptic nations polluting the Union from the inside. There'd have to be a groundswell movement far larger than the original Brexit movement, and I simply don't see that happening.

The fundamental issues of why Brexit happened have to be addressed first, and the British people simply don't want that.

Examples: 'We get our special deals back'. That was negotiated from inside the EU, with the leverage to leave or abuse the veto they held. That leverage is gone.

'We won't join the Euro'. That was a special opt out, also negotiated from inside the EU.

Of course Britain wants to have its cake and eat it. We all do, but it's about leverage, and the UK has exhausted its leverage. Better that the EU and UK remain close allies but forge different paths. It's clear the UK doesn't want to pay the cost of EU membership.

It doesn't really matter what the bulk of British people think they want if the elites can spend a few million turning swing voters against their own interests, and that's fundamentally what needs to be addressed.

s_dev··on The US is not a democracy but an oligarchy, study concludes (2014)
https://www.v-dem.net/documents/75/V-Dem_Institute_Democracy...

The US has slid below Hungary in democracy, Hungary was also straight sliding towards dictatorship. Hungary did a 180 though by electing Peter Maygar. Hopefully the US can do a 180 in the midterms.

Otherwise it will probably slide in to being a full Oligarchy like Russia.

To me this crazy thing is the complete lack of alarm or sense of urgency from Americans on this. They seem very subdued and very complacent regarding this change.

s_dev··on The End of an Era
>No other carbon terrestrial species can run for such long distances

Certain birds can fly much further and faster using less energy. It's not running but they are terrestrial and they are travelling. They can cross the longest lengths of ocean in a single trip.

Humans real super power has been our brains. We don't need to chase when we can trap.

s_dev··on The true power of regular expressions (2012)
Just like jq there will be some lad along to tell us that "I don't like the syntax and find it confusing" not realising that's the exact superpower it presents is it's terseness is a key property to it's adoption. jq and regex really are sort of handy one liners that you invoke in other scripts and you explain what they do in your script with a comment.

s_dev··on Europe's fires are just the start
>They must be regularly cleaned

People keep reiterating this probably because Trump keeps reiterating but it just sounds ridiculous.

How do you clean forests? The debris is part of the forest, not all areas of a forest are easily accessible or feasible to transport debis out of there. A dead tree is actually an ecosystem of fungi and insects. Cleaning it may make it more fire prone as broken sticks and leaves shield the ground from the sun allowing the soil to hold on to moisture a little longer. There is plenty of room for nuance here.

I would need to listen to actual experts on this, the correct solution is probably something akin to resorting wetlands and beavers which act as fantastic self maintaining fire breaks.

However when you suggest things like this you see the actual issues pop up, local farmers protest and others using NIMBY laws to block so they get payouts.

s_dev··on I'm 38 and I Can't Support Myself Anymore
I'll never understand how people think a personal anecdote contradicts a more general point attained by evaluating collected data that would include those anecdotes.

e.g. The claim: Planes are a very safe way to travel.

Followed by someone jumping up to say: I know a person who was injured in a rough landing.

Note I'm not claiming either the individual or family is the atomic unit here just pointing out that your contribution doesn't contradict or even narrow the argument.

s_dev··on Sony deletes more movies from the accounts of people who ‘bought’ them
Into and Beyond the Spiderverse are flawless movies.
s_dev··on The console wars have been lost
Consoles mostly died with the PlayStation 3. Consoles (At least Sony and Microsoft's offering) have become repackaged PCs for a while now this will be especially apparent with the Steamboxes going up on the same shelves as Playstations in the future.

I will concede it's hard to reason or discuss about these things without getting lost in a Ship of Theseus definition of what 'console' and 'PC' is and where the lines are. The PlayStation 3 had the cell processor and was fundamentally different to PCs imo.

Nintendo has always seemed to manage stay as a console and seems to come out of the console wars stronger than either Sony or Microsoft, so they seem to be the exception here.
