samtheprogram··on When UPS charged me a $684 tariff on $355 of vintage computer parts
Indeed, it's directly contributed to burgeoning administrative costs in universities through the Federal Student Loan program, and related the devaluing of college degrees.

It's probably helped in some aspects too, but the student debt crisis was created by the DOE. And most everyone can agree that college costs have ballooned in the US while the value of the degrees have decreased.

It's a perfect example of the worst of both worlds of government guarantees in a capitalist society, like Amtrak and US health care. It eliminates many aspects of competition and blurs incentives while remaining in a economy where decisions are profit-driven.

> I happily admit that I would not be able to be productive in such an environment

No shit. 80%+ percent of the country is rubble.

samtheprogram··on AI World Clocks
It regenerates on page load. I find that pretty useful.

Grok 4 and Kimi nailed it the first time for me, then only Kimi on the second pass.

samtheprogram··on Steam Machine
That doesn't change the fact that D3DMetal is closed-source. Wine just links to it.

There's also DXMT which is open-source, but doesn't support DX12.

samtheprogram··on Steam Machine
That's because D3DMetal already exists. Games run like they did on Proton ~4-5 years ago, some games better.

I mostly no longer boot my Linux machine anymore to play games.

The anticheat story is probably not as good but I don't play any AAA games, so I wouldn't know.

samtheprogram··on Valdi – A cross-platform UI framework that delivers native performance
Why though? You aren’t interacting with it. What difference does it make?
samtheprogram··on App Store web has exposed all its source code
Idk why you are getting downvoted.

To elaborate on your comment, if you just ship sourcemaps in production, that means you can ship minified code and track down what _actual_ source that you _aren't_ shipping to users is getting called, is in stack traces, etc.

I'm not aware of a point of sourcemaps otherwise.

samtheprogram··on Google suspended my company's Google cloud account for the third time
The example in this blog post, they did something recommended by Google and still got banned. Based on that, I'm not sure their built in moderation tools are enough insurance.
samtheprogram··on X.org Security Advisory: multiple security issues X.Org X server and Xwayland
I meant it in the sense of continuing to run old C code like X.org in a safer way without unnecessary rewrites to memory safe languages. These vulnerabilities, like this one that's been in the wild as you say for 30 years uncaught, will continue to be found. Something like Fil-C is really useful in that context.

I also said "would it have" -- I don't really care about timeline. Obviously Fil-C is a recent development, that doesn't make the question I asked any less interesting.

samtheprogram··on X.org Security Advisory: multiple security issues X.Org X server and Xwayland
Would Fil-C have prevented the first or third?
samtheprogram··on Tether is now the 17th largest holder of US debt
They aren't just holding cash and/or doing nothing with it. Come on.
samtheprogram··on How I turned Zig into my favorite language to write network programs in
Bun is 100% fine in production. And you should be using it instead of transpiling TypeScript unless there’s some other barrier to using it.
samtheprogram··on The Swift SDK for Android
Not yet, and possibly not ever quite from Xcode. But using Swift CLI tools, yes.

The example Activty I saw is pretty rough ergonomically, but I have no doubt an ergonomic, SwiftUI-like library could be built on top of what’s currently there and/or on the roadmap.

Your comment encapsulates why we have religious thinking around models.

samtheprogram··on Beginner Guide to VPS Hetzner and Coolify
I clicked the article because I wanted to hear about Coolify, but its not mentioned at all beyond the article tag, intro, and closing statements. I don't think Coolify should be mentioned at all.

This article is really about preparing a VPS for Coolify deployment, but stops short of Coolify setup AFAICT

samtheprogram··on Stealing from Google
The components work by requesting the image URL from your own server/API, at a route like `/_next/image`. The actual image URL that's passed as a prop to the component is passed to that API endpoint as a URL parameter.

So, the endpoint is essentially a proxy that does additional image processing, like compression and width/height resizing (again, a URL parameter that the Image component or any other client can change based on the device / screen size in use).

This means that without a domain whitelist, theoretically any image URL can be passed to the endpoint, which will then be processed and cached by your infra.

This has been used in the wild, e.g. racking up charges on someone else's Vercel bill by requesting a bunch of images through this endpoint.

samtheprogram··on Detect Electron apps on Mac that hasn't been updated to fix the system wide lag
Electron updates already exist, it's the individual apps that need to update their version of Electron.
samtheprogram··on How the AI bubble ate Y Combinator
I wonder how much of this is perverse incentives.

If all the AI startups are using Anthropic and OpenAI, does this investment in AI startups continue to be the norm until the Anthropic and OpenAI investors see a return?

Is the article taken down? Clicking the link just goes to a generic list of articles on MSN for me (redirects to msn.com).

samtheprogram··on Baldur's Gate 3 Steam Deck – Native Version
> I think one factor to this is that PC gamers are hostile to telemetry

Is there any data to support this? IME most PC gamers I know don't give a shit about telemetry. They are stock Windows and Android users, love Google products, etc.

They only care whatsoever when it comes to adblocking, because they don't want to watch ads.

(I'm also in the US)

samtheprogram··on The key to getting MVC correct is understanding what models are
> For example, in ObjC an int is an object, but it is not observable. However, an ObjC object with an int property is observable using Key-Value Observing

I haven't written Objective-C in a decade or so, but isn't this a pretty big mischaracterization of the language? NSInteger is a typedef to a C type IIRC, while there's NSNumber for the cases you want an object and/or are deserializing -- and which has observable propeties?

samtheprogram··on Claude Code Checkpoints
Yup, just rebase.

I just commit with a “wip!”-prefaced message whenever the LLM pauses and says it’s finished, including new files. You can squash and cleanup later, or revert back to a state before it screwed up.

Also doubles as a way to cohesively look at the changes it made without all the natural language and recursive error/type fixing it does while working.

I don’t understand why people are making it so complicated. You’re saving a minute per iteration with the LLM, tops, at risk of losing control or introducing hard to find issues. It is the definition of diminishing returns.

samtheprogram··on This Month in Ladybird
Hah, the same could be said about Rust.

And I’d disagree with both.

samtheprogram··on I tried Servo
If you think WebKit is broken, you should actually download a build of Servo and try it out.
samtheprogram··on Sign in with Google in Chrome
You didn’t finish my comment. Read the last sentence.

Anti-fingerprinting tech just produces a different fingerprint. Google knows e.g. when things are scrambled but certain other things stay the same.

samtheprogram··on Sign in with Google in Chrome
This is not true of any web browser because of fingerprinting. That’s the point of fingerprinting for ad networks.

You can try using a different device but even then, I occasionally get recommending things that are definitely influenced by my roommates (i.e. on the same WiFi)

Using something that prevents fingerprinting helps, but only if you don’t use that browser all the time — otherwise it’s just another fingerprint — and still on the same network.

samtheprogram··on Global hack on Microsoft Sharepoint hits U.S., state agencies, researchers say
Absolutely insane. Especially in light of their layoffs. Should be criminal. According to another comment in the thread, it is?
samtheprogram··on Recovering from AI addiction
I’m surprised my example didn’t clarify things.

Literally wasn’t the right word. Maybe control just needs more context, like “control of your usage”?

samtheprogram··on Ask HN: Is it time to fork HN into AI/LLM and "Everything else/other?"
