scalyweb··on Host Your Static Website on Amazon S3
This probably deserves a separate discussion.

As an entrepreneur do you also use other entrepreneur's/start-up's services or just rely on the big (market share) players in the market? A startup is hard so do you go out of your way to help support other smaller service providers?

If you have an opportunity to support competition in the marketplace by not flocking to the lowest price(Walmart) but paying a bit more for a smaller service, do you make that sacrifice?

Knowing that NearlyFreeSpeech.Net appears to offer similar functionality, why choose a larger provider like Amazon if you have the mindset of a founder?

As entrepreneurs at what point do you decide that Amazon is "too big" and do you decide to stick with smaller service providers? Is your use of Amazon strictly a commodity provider?

Is star.me not accessible/visible to you?
scalyweb··on Ze Frank’s Star.me Is Like Being In Kindergarten All Over Again
This is the product from someone with a doctorate in neuroscience? So much for moving the human collective forward. Now I don't feel so bad about the kids coming out with undergraduate CS degrees feeling like they don't know how to program.

I don't use Facebook but I do use Twitter. I do love games. What is it in regards to social networks, games and the idea of positive reinforcement am I missing with this project?

scalyweb··on Got Hacking? Git Hacking.
Thank you. Perhaps add that to the site and you'll give off a lot more "warm and fuzzies."
scalyweb··on Got Hacking? Git Hacking.
Might want to make that sooner than just "in the coming days."
scalyweb··on Got Hacking? Git Hacking.
Great idea!

Where is my e-mail going? What are you planning to do with it?

Also, there is no identification on who is running the project.

scalyweb··on Why I chose to build a Plack framework instead of using Mojolicious
Interesting blog post about the use of an "opinionated" Perl web framework versus the long existing mantra of TIMTOWTDI (There Is More Than One Way To Do It).
scalyweb··on Apple's Steve Wozniak: 'We've lost a lot of control'
Irrelevant to most, but the tangled mess of network cables behind the "Woz" in the interview really ticks me off. I'd love to have a word with the network folks there.
scalyweb··on Scale of the Universe
And I was getting big-headed this morning for solving a silly problem for a client. Thanks for reminding me of my place. :)
scalyweb··on Armin Ronacher: Collections in C
This is one of the last books that I'm still hoping will make it to a digital format somehow. I just can't see ordering a new paper copy again.

scalyweb··on Within 3 days another power outage at Linode (Fremont)
Thanks for sharing. We're you able to identify with Linode the outages for each datacenter or do the stats include any false positives?
scalyweb··on Within 3 days another power outage at Linode (Fremont)
Definitely I agree. But some clients will pay more for proximity such as monitoring or DNS providers. Chicago(350 Cermak) and NY are an example because of the financial trading markets. Clients pay "through the nose" for a colo spot there because every millisecond counts. If XYZ Trading Company sets up in the suburbs of Chicago, that 5milliseconds makes a huge difference.

But you are definitely right that most people don't need that kind of silliness.

I came from North Carolina where Google and Apple saw the lower power/employee costs as a reason to open datacenters. In the western part of the state is a beautiful city called Asheville which was never known as a network hub. But because of the geographic location halfway between Atlanta and DC a company(uberbandwidth.com/netriplex) decided to create a datacenter there. Lower costs...but the only way IN and OUT of their network was a backhaul through Atlanta or through DC. If one of those backhaul lines go down they've basically lost their single selling point.

scalyweb··on Within 3 days another power outage at Linode (Fremont)
Locations are selected often due to proximity of a target market for reduced response latency. Also getting transit Tier I transit/backbone providers to lay a network in smaller markets is quite a hard sell. Google and Facebook benefit from being able to commit to large monthly bandwidth usage.

It is probably going to be almost impossible to have a "carrier neutral" hotel in rural Oregon but you might get a single ATT or Level3 or if you're really sucking it, a Cogent line.

HE Fremont is specifically great for reaching markets in APAC and HE itself is pushing IPv6 quite hard and so is one of the few providers that make it widely available.

scalyweb··on Dancer 1.2000, finally out
Drex, you just shot yourself in the foot. The creator of Mojolicious was also the creator of Catalyst.

Also in case you hadn't heard this term in the Perl world, this is a great example of TIMTOWTDI. (There Is More Than One Way To Do It)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theres_more_than_one_way_to_do_...

Now kindly move along and as others have said take the poison with you.

Congratulations on the stable release. When are you updating the website with that that fancy new template I recall seeing a few months back?
scalyweb··on Ask HN: Any web startups using Java?
I used to think so as well but now there is a great framework called Play:

scalyweb··on Facebook Tries To Silence Lamebook: Removes Its Page, Blocks Links And Likes
Google could certainly make their own innocent "mistake" and have Lamebook be the destintation for "I'm Feeling Lucky" for those who can't remember the url for facebook.com.

Facebook, your britches are looking a bit small these days. IPO dreams sure do lead to mediocre results.
scalyweb··on Getting A New Product Off The Ground: Part Two
Patrick, Thanks for sharing so much about your new service and what it takes to get off the ground. I'm curious if you plan to use a true merchant account for handling credit card payments since AppointmentReminder orders are probably going to be larger in value than Bingo cards.

Also, do you plan to form some kind of business/formal entity? I see reference to Kalzumeus but is this just a placeholder? I'd love to hear thoughts on those aspects when launching a new service.

scalyweb··on Top 14 tools I use for my web startup
Got it. Thanks Steve.
scalyweb··on Top 14 tools I use for my web startup
I equate inexpensive with a cost. Am I misunderstanding something here? CentOS is a free distro.
scalyweb··on Top 14 tools I use for my web startup
Why are you paying for "CentOS?" Does Rackspace charge for different distributions? If you're going to pay for a distro then might as well go for the source and pay for RHEL.

I'm basing this from your comment: "CentOS 5.4 - pretty much an exact replica of RedHat 5.4, so there's lot's of online documentation and help. Plus, it came as an inexpensive option with Rackspace. :)"

scalyweb··on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 now available
Thanks for creating and putting so many hours into this library. I think this tool more than any other has allowed me to do so much with KVM.

I do like the blue "script" font. Does anyone know the name of it?

Nevermind, I've found it. For anyone interested: It's Journal by Fontourist.

scalyweb··on Zero to a Million Users in 15 Days
I'm impressed with the product and it's a great idea. But I find it hard to believe that privacy issues on social networks are so difficult to solve. Upon sign-up with Kik, your contact address list is mined and those contacts are then e-mailed. C'mon developers, I know the idea is to make it as easy as possible for monetization with advertisers later but how about putting some more effort into respecting my wishes not to get me into hot water with the real people I know.

You help me and I'll help you but leave it up to me to tell my friends about it.

I'm sure I read the following on HN just a few days ago talking about similar privacy concerns with social platforms:

"If your privacy practices aren't transparent, then you introduce doubt. Doubt leads to lower usage."

scalyweb··on Microsoft releases F# under Apache 2.0 license
I was under the impression this was/is going to be one of the side benefits of the Parrot VM.

Updated to add: Directly from the Mono Project website "An open source, cross-platform, implementation of C# and the CLR that is binary compatible with Microsoft.NET"

Now with F# on Mono...great things!
