scottshamus··on Unplanned exposure during diving in the spent nuclear fuel pool (2011)
I was curious about your point that we only have ~20 years supply. The article you linked doesn’t really defend that estimate, I think it’s actually pointing out that’s the absolute floor of our supply.

It mentions estimates of undiscovered uranium and also multiple pathways to extend that estimate if there was demand to improve the technology or increase our supply. It sounds like realistically we could find the material for powering all of our energy using fission if we had the demand to do so.

scottshamus··on Single SF restaurant may be operating 70 different storefronts on DoorDash
I’m not sure if only ordering from legit chains helps anymore. I’ve heard (and it’s mentioned elsewhere in this thread) of chains sub-contracting with ghost kitchens to offload the delivery traffic from their real locations. No idea on how they can do quality control with these sub-contractors.
scottshamus··on The Knight Capital Disaster
If anyone reading this hasn’t heard this before, I encourage you to read the do’s/dont’s of protobufs for some other good best practices.

scottshamus··on California employers must reimburse remote workers for all necessary expenses
We’ll start being asked for utility bills during interviews and recruiters will screen for people with heat pumps. “Candidate must have updated insulation and new windows”
scottshamus··on Building personal and organizational prestige
Work on revenue-generating projects/products. When push comes to shove, cost centers are cut first. If you work on search ads at Google, you have a lot of job security. I wouldn’t want to work on customer support tools there…
scottshamus··on FTC announces proposed rule banning fake reviews and testimonials
I interpret that more as banning all of the shadier situations like the mattress companies that own “independent” mattress review sites.
scottshamus··on Honda Monkey Breaks World Record Covering 4,183 Km on Single Tank
In the article, it says they added sponges in the tank for that exact reason after they had a lot of sloshing during testing.
scottshamus··on Social media influencer Douglass Mackey convicted of election interference
He’s accused of conspiring to trick voters into using fake voting methods so they didn’t vote. How would you react if someone created a fake voting location and put a full page ad in a newspaper telling people to vote there?
scottshamus··on TikTok Congress Hearing
This almost happened before when Trump issued an executive order for Bytedance to divest TikTok. Most of the media outlets reported that Bytedance was actively courting U.S. corporations to buy Tiktok. I'm sure there was a lot more going on behind the scenes but I don't think the automatic reaction would be to shutter TikTok.
scottshamus··on Tell HN: Did you know that you can help restore a person’s eyesight for $50?
It may not be related to nature. I remember reading research on how sunlight and focusing on distant objects is really important for developing proper eyesight. The current issues with eyesight could be a side-effect of spending more time in doors and only staring at things within 20 to 30 ft.

scottshamus··on NTSB Calls for Alcohol Detection Systems in All New Vehicles
I think the passive system will likely using steering wheel sensors and driving-facing cameras to detect if a person is paying attention similar to Teslas requirement for FSD
scottshamus··on Profiles of people living in homeless encampments, rarely what you’d expect
People with serious mental health and/or addiction issues
scottshamus··on Why I'm in the Army Reserve – an explainer for my friends in tech
Agreed. Even if your GI bill doesn’t technically cover all of your expenses, many schools have Yellow Ribbon Programs that waive any excess cost

scottshamus··on What were interviews for programming positions like in the 70s and 80s?
I did a similar program in 2011 for one of the largest life insurance companies in the U.S. At the time, I thought it was a new program to get COBOL programmers since they were becoming more difficult to hire but your comment made me realize they likely always hired this way.
scottshamus··on Paper Website: Start a tiny website from your notebook
Tangentially related but I always appreciated Jeff Bridges hand-written website

Only posting because there’s a few suggestions about hand-written styling on a web page.

scottshamus··on United States Broadband speed ranks 12th according to SpeedTest Global Index
If you don’t mind, could you provide any more info on how to find providers for point to point relays? I didn’t even know this was an option and I’m having a tough time finding any information that isn’t specific to large businesses.
scottshamus··on Japan Shatters Internet Speed Record at 319 tb/s
I’ve never worked with fiber optics but I wonder if that’s the point of the recirculating loop i.e. use a shorter fiber but run the signal through it multiple times to simulate a longer length.
scottshamus··on Death rates are declining for many common cancers in the U.S., report finds
I appreciate you taking the time to tell your story. It’s easy to view expensive treatments that only extend someone’s life by a year or two as too costly but those remaining years can be the most important for that person and their friends/family.
scottshamus··on U.S. government prepares to issue landmark report on UFOs
I think we’re going to discover that the people operating these sophisticated instruments aren’t properly trained on how to handle anomalies in their data. One of them was simply an out of focus nightvision system with a triangle focal ring. The tic tac video is most likely a large sea bird and the fighter pilots didn’t properly understand how parallax at high zooms looked. This YouTube video is pretty snarky but it’s a decent overview of it. https://youtu.be/VCH7BWGpl5s
scottshamus··on No Code Reviews by Default
Exactly what I was thinking… code reviews are a major component of many security requirements.

scottshamus··on Cleaning Up Your Postgres Database
There’s lot of good solutions out there but if you really like using Postgres, you could move your logs to a secondary Postgres DB or Postgres server so it doesn’t affect your application DB’s performance. I’ve scaled this to 10s of millions of log messages without much issue.
scottshamus··on How to annotate everything
There has been active work on this:

https://www.w3.org/annotation/

It says web annotation but it was born out of an open annotation initiative. The fragment selector supports the most common media types

scottshamus··on Supreme Court allows blind people to sue retailers if websites aren't accessible
There’s a javascript library called aXE that’s pretty good at catching the major things. There’s also a browser plugin to check a site by hand.
scottshamus··on PGHoard – PostgreSQL backup and restore service for cloud object storages
I'm going to look at this more later, but my first thought is how does this compare to WAL-e https://github.com/wal-e/wal-e
scottshamus··on 42 percent of new cancer patients lose their life savings
Do you have any citation for the "dramatically worse" claim?
scottshamus··on How to make MongoDB not suck for analytics
Please do. It would be great to hear how a company took a pragmatic approach that worked well enough for them. The mindshare right now seems like people are pushing for using combination of five different technologies to do simple aggregation queries. Sometimes knowing a single tool really well is all you need...
scottshamus··on 'Biohacker' Who Injected Himself with DIY Herpes Treatment Found Dead
Your body has automatic reflexes to wake you up if you start to inhale water or lack oxygen. If he didn't wake up, then there was probably some underlying health issue that actually put him into an unconscious state.
scottshamus··on Ask HN: Successful tech startup but find every day emotionally challenging
Depends on what you are worrying about. Is it your product's future? Competitors? Keeping customers? Managing employees' performance? In my experience, stress comes from having all of these problems but not having any plan. I would write out everything that is stressing you out then try to find the highest priority. That feeling of having too much to do is a GOOD thing. It means you have tons of ideas or your customers love your product and want to improve it. That should never go away if you do your job correctly. You just need to develop strategies to know when your roadmap is full and how to manage scope/expectations. Maybe you need a Product Manager or Salesperson to handle expectations from your customers?
scottshamus··on How Genetics Is Changing Our Understanding of ‘Race’
Irish and Italian people were previously considered separate races but have merged into the "white" race. Have the genetics of Ireland changed drastically in the past 100 years? Or was it the social construct of "race" that changed? Why do some countries consider certain groups a different race and other countries view them as a socioeconomic class e.g. gypsies? Humans migrate and interbreed with different genetic groups and have been doing so for a long, long time. We are really a spectrum of genetic differences and not really a bunch of grouped individuals.
