sdca··on Ask HN: Do any discussion boards that aren't Facebook/Reddit still exist?
4chan, xda developers, stackoverflow
sdca··on Coding Stories: Me vs. the VNC Guy
When I was a junior in high school and computer lab monitor, I made a suggestion that we install VNC on every computer and it was green lit by the administration. We used an app that could view thumbnails of all screens at the same time. I only enforced the "no porn" rule. Kids could play games, browse the web and I accepted fake hall passes. But if they were watching porn they would be thrown out and banned.
sdca··on Playball: Watch MLB games from the comfort of your own terminal
Too bad you'll be missing a lot of the game experience this way, like the roar of the crowd and the banging of trashcans.
sdca··on Google Forcing Nest Cameras’ Visual Indicator Light To Be On
It should announce its presence on an interval too. What if someone camoflages the camera in some Christmas lights? What if you're blind?
sdca··on How I Got my $3500 Camera Kit Stolen on KitSplit
>attempt a retrieval via brute force (hired guard etc)

This can be a very bad idea, especially if the seller isn't a thief but someone who unknowingly purchased the stolen property.

sdca··on Hackers can fake radio signals to 'hijack' aircraft landing systems
Sounds like a single point of failure if the pilots rely on ATC too much. Low visibility landings and such.
sdca··on Hackers can fake radio signals to 'hijack' aircraft landing systems
You're assuming it would broadcast long enough to find the station, not a hit and run operation. And even if there was a constant signal, they could be using a repeater.

sdca··on What Closing a Government Radio Station Would Mean for Clocks
Analog AM/FM should be the next to go.

sdca··on The treadmill was invented as a prison rehabilitation device
Somewheeere beyond the seaaa
sdca··on Why Pre-Order Food Then Wait in Line
Just use the drive-through and you'll skip everyone.
sdca··on Mark Zuckerberg testifies before Congress
His line of questioning was designed to expose discrepancies in stated policies versus actual implementation, with the goal of eroding trust of Facebook in that half of electorate. Eroding trust was the whole point that the hearing was called, and in that regard Cruz probably had the best questions. His questions were met with denials rather than "I'll get back to you on that".
sdca··on Ask HN: What are your favorite podcast episodes, and who might enjoy them?
Jim Florentine's podcast has pretty good commentary on cringey social media posting trends.
sdca··on The FBI Says It Can't Find Hackers to Hire Because They All Smoke Pot (2014)
The so-called "cybersecurity experts" main task in the FBI is probably running forensics on narcotics traffickers' devices and data. Using illegal drugs would be a conflict of interest.
sdca··on Startup founders throughout the Midwest are doing something new: staying
>a density of talent and capital unrivaled in the world

The Four Asian Tigers have already surpassed SV on that. There's obviously a government-related cultural gap that won't win them any popularity contests.

sdca··on Seeking Path Back to Life
Ask other people on disability how they got on it.
sdca··on Ask HN: Which stack do you use at your startup?
Stackshare is more informative than a majority of the replies in this thread that aren't stating their startup's name or use case.
sdca··on Foxconn unit to cut over 10k jobs as robotics take over
The government can ban imports and robotics.
sdca··on Ask HN: Which Linux distribution do you use, and why?
Kubuntu 17.10 because I wanted per-folder views in Dolphin. The 16.04 backports repo hasn't had an update for ages.
sdca··on Update on Twitter’s Review of the 2016 U.S. Election
>Our partners Common Sense Media, the National Association for Media Literacy, the Family Online Safety Institute and Connect Safely, amongst others, have helped us to craft materials and conduct workshops to help our users learn how to process online information and understand which sources of news have integrity.

So Twitter, which sources of news have integrity?

sdca··on Not Applicable: What Your Job Post Is Really Saying
That's ageist, racist and sexist.
sdca··on Ask HN: Found security flaws but vendor seems not to care. What should I do?
Sell it to the U.S. government
sdca··on A swarm of submarine drones will scour the depths for MH370
Your submarine gets a free baptism by the godfather of typos
sdca··on Google and Facebook Have Failed Us
Speculation on motive begins immediately when we learn what the target was and the weapons that were used. You can't censor that without censoring the entire incident.
sdca··on Under iOS 11, authorities won’t be able to image your device without a passcode
It's not "forward thinking" to put that feature in 4 years after Touch ID debuted and people have already been forced to unlock their phones. They should be issuing warnings that fingerprint sensors are for convenience and reduce security unless they're used in multi-factor authentication.
sdca··on What Does It Take to Track a Million Cell Phones?
Here's one such testimony from Aaron Hernandez's murder trial, where his cell phone pinged a tower near the scene of the crime:

sdca··on Linux 4.12 Released
This lacks linux-tools and thus breaks cpu frequency and cpu governor management tools (cpupower, TLP, etc).

For reasons unknown Fedora's RawhideKernelNodebug repo includes that package but Ubuntu's doesn't :)

sdca··on How I Hacked My University's Registration System with Python and Twilio
Twilio is great and all but an SMS or other notification doesn't actually guarantee you a class that's available to all students.

A class was sniped from me one time while I was still on the confirmation screen. So unlike OP I fully automated the process.

EDIT: A notification & response is good for solving a captcha if they have one, if you don't want to outsource that to mechanical turk (or trust their timing / accuracy).
