searchableguy··on Dropbox announces 20% global workforce reduction
No idea about what big CEOs feel but for me, I would absolutely continue working even if I was a trillionaire someday. What matters and drives me would be impact and influence I could have on society. Have couple billions? Throw them on things I care about and keep getting more to throw at the same.
searchableguy··on The Collapse of Self-Worth in the Digital Age
I sometimes get hand written note to review and mention the name of the person who made my food on food delivery app.
searchableguy··on Moral implications of being moderately successful computer scientist and a woman
I have been told I look like a software engineer or a maths teacher all the time.

I'm fairly sure it has nothing to do with how I dress or look but simply because of stereotypes associated with Indians. If I was whiter, people would say fitness coach.

searchableguy··on Defeated CEOs are now conceding hybrid working is here to stay
The simplest reason is lack of effective communication, team bonding, and morale.

People behave differently behind a screen even if incentivised by money. This becomes a problem at the scale of big companies.

Eg - without body language, tone and context - everyone needs to be extra charitable to avoid miscommunication or distrust. This might cause people to be overly defensive in their approach to communicate.

searchableguy··on Vietnamese property tycoon sentenced to death in $27B fraud case
There are abandoned city projects like Amravati, Lavasa and others. The scale and reason behind ghost cities in India is different. Most stop construction mid way due to financial or regulatory constraints.

> Just yesterday Alephnerd was confidently proclaiming there are no tuk-tuks in Thailand anymore.

That's not true. He claimed there are no tuk tuks outside of tourist centers. Tuktuks are mostly used by tourists and getting phased out by the government as they are deemed unsafe.

I saw this YC startup ad right after I finished reading this.

searchableguy··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
Apologies. I meant when you are the only person who is not in the group chat or messaging platform, then people won't call you to invite. It is much higher friction.
searchableguy··on GPT-4 Turbo with Vision is a step backwards for coding
I use what impact and benefit my work has to answer what I do.

In your insurance case, I would say something like "I build tools to shield businesses from unexpected disasters like earthquakes or floods" or "I help people worry less about expenses during an emergency"

If someone asks me more, then I might add on that I work on software to automate claim process or similar.

searchableguy··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
Because people will not invite you if you are not in the group chat. Unfortunately, people have forgotten how to call and are afraid of receiving calls.

This is more prominent among people who grew up with social media everywhere compared to ones who did not.

You can use tsx as loader with node if you want to directly run typescript.

node --import tsx ./file.ts

searchableguy··on Ethereum has blobs. Where do we go from here?
Most major developing countries in Asia have p2p instant payments and bank accounts for free or with minimum balance requirement.

UPI (Indian market) launched cross border support with a couple countries starting this year. 118 billion transactions happen via UPI annually.

I do think there is some niche market where ethereum payments will shine but hard to beat free and instant systems already in place at far bigger scale.

searchableguy··on The killer app of Gemini Pro 1.5 is using video as an input
I pre-ordered the rewind pendant. It will listen 24/7 and help you figure out what happened.

I bet meta is thinking of doing this with quest once the battery life improves.

searchableguy··on Your mother can now recommend matches for you on Tinder
Fairly common in India with any dating app though. Some are mostly parents operating the profile.
searchableguy··on Tell HN: Wise froze $40k+ in funds for 10 days and counting
> I've discovered that being with a real bank is better in most ways

Same in India. I tried using a neobank but quickly closed the account. They don't have the services traditional banks do and everything was slower than it is in my current bank. My current bank will pick up any paper and signature they need from home or deliver any documents to home the same day.

I get better Forex rate than wise or any startup. The target audience for these neobank are college students or new working people.

For reference, I use ICICI which is the third largest bank in India.

searchableguy··on Bitcoin stolen from FTX being converted to cash via "mixer"
I don't know about bitcoin but for Ethereum, many big mixers were funded by advocates for privacy. So there is deniability if you mix your illegal proceeds with legimate ones. It's not much different from cash in a way.

It's also possible to remove the link to mixer if you bridge on the Ethereum side. So you would have a wallet with a different currency with no link back to where it came from.

searchableguy··on DJI Mini 4 Pro
Looking for the same. I remember skydio being a good option a couple years ago before their pivot to enterprise and military. Is there a DIY option with open source autopilot?

DJI doesn't sell their latest drones directly in India so out of options here.

searchableguy··on SillycoValley: Write Code, Build Your Startup
1.5 million users

Hired 6 marketers. 1 dev and designer initially but let go after initial user growth.

Then I fired all 6 marketers and the funds stayed same or increased.

There should be a sales and monetization option after demo day.

Another one using script to automate clicking: https://cln.sh/F6kqFLLL

40 billion users by hiring everyone with team to marketers ratio of 1:3. Slowly fired non-marketing team members and moved to firing marketing near the demo day.

100 billion on another try by pumping marketing up initially to gain organic growth then coasting by using 2 developers until demo day

I updated the instructions and added a feature to change the model used by whiz. Could you please update whiz_cli using npm and add `export WHIZ_LLM_MODEL=gpt-4` to your shell.

instructions are available in README now: https://github.com/searchableguy/whiz#installation

searchableguy··on Show HN: Whiz – A copilot for your terminal
I love yours. It is entirely in shell script.

I recommend using chatgpt functions for more reliability. I'm making use of them[0]. I wanted to use javascript to extend it with a plugin system, haha.

searchableguy··on Show HN: Whiz – A copilot for your terminal
That's a cool project.

I built this after copy pasting the same git command to list all the recently committed branches from chat.openai.com.

I have a couple more functions that I want to add to the CLI like [0] translating novels, web scraping or LLM powered grep.

searchableguy··on Show HN: Whiz – A copilot for your terminal
I can reproduce this.

The issue is ChatGPT hallucinating a function that doesn't exist. I'm figuring out how to rail guard against this. Thanks for trying it out and reporting with an example.

If I switch to ChatGPT 4, it works fine.

searchableguy··on UPI Payments: 10B transactions a month done, next stop 100B
Jio's push for 4G and unlimited data packs helped a lot as well. Pre-jio, internet was too expensive, unreliable, and slow to use frequently.

I'm amazed by their recent 5G coverage in the country too. Getting unlimited 1gbps in a lot of tier 2 and 3 cities at $3.5 a month. Unbelievable

searchableguy··on Doing laundry on campus without a phone
Recently, I did not have a phone for a couple of days so I was using my laptop for everything. I came across so many bugs on the desktop equivalent of apps if they existed at all.

Some of them were frustrating like when I tried to order food on swiggy, it would go through with a credit card then get auto refunded and cancelled. The catch? The order will be delivered anyway and appear back in your order history. The refund will not be processed. Due to this strange behaviour, I ended up ordering the same thing 4x until I received my first order and it magically appeared back in the list as fulfilled.

The security guard asked me next day - why did you not receive all your orders that appeared late night? Was there a party?
