selectodude··on Ink droplets in motion snag top prize in Nikon Small World contest
Inkjet printers for their faults are some of the most insane technology that I can think of.
selectodude··on Meta Employees Denounce Interference in Brazilian Elections
The fewer people that are willing to work there, the dumber and less effective metas bullshit continues to be. Look at the Trump Admin - anybody who is still there sucks at their job. The damage they’ve done is immeasurable but it seems to be backfiring pretty significantly. Meta is successful because of the smart motivated people who continue to work there. Turn it into a confederacy of dunces. Quit your job.
selectodude··on Meta Employees Denounce Interference in Brazilian Elections
Meta employees still cash checks from evil company not realizing all the interference is possible due to them showing up to work every day.
selectodude··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
I pretty reliably get 200 tokens per second on deep infra.
selectodude··on Sony Retires Its Last 4K Blu-ray Player in Japan, PS5 Is All That's Left
I think at this point it’s called vinyl.
selectodude··on Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed
Opus 5.5 is about the same price as Kimi K3.1 Pro Highspeed.
selectodude··on United Airlines CEO Calls for National Wealth Tax
Federal dollars to states and municipalities in Democratic-leaning states have been eviscerated. Since states can’t reasonably sunset a program with 6 weeks notice, the money has to come from somewhere else.
selectodude··on I told people I'm a convicted felon after 20 years of hiding it
https://sos.ok.gov/documents/Pardons/204490.pdf

That’s his pardon. That’s about all we got though, the record was expunged.

selectodude··on Tmux and Claude Code: Sessions, Send-Keys, and the Ceiling
I don’t see much of a benefit locally but for remote machines over ssh it’s pretty nice.
selectodude··on Tesla Roadster
Makes sense, it was a Lotus Elise.
selectodude··on Apple HomeView
Apple can’t prove a negative. You have to prove they’re lying.
selectodude··on Feds got warrants to use fake cell towers to hunt down Don Lemon's producer
Trump is doing plenty of stuff that he has absolutely no legal authority to do, so I’m not sure why you think the law is some sort of roadblock.
selectodude··on FDA may allow some toxic chemicals to be added to food without safety review
I find it to be even worse. They’d say exactly what they were going to do and between the stupidity of voters and the sane-washing from the media, people simply did not believe them! And then you ask them now and they say they didn’t vote for this! Yes, you very literally did. Nothing about what ICE is doing was a secret or a surprise.
selectodude··on Bitwarden Dual License Model
I mean, no it's absolutely nothing like "publishing all your passwords outright" but fine. Pay the $20/yr and don't have them host it, host it yourself. Just pay them the $20.
selectodude··on Bitwarden Dual License Model
The thing I always think about is that they wouldn't have to change the license and tighten the screws if people paid for it. Getting mad that the free hosted password manager has changed the deal a little bit I find to be quite arrogant.

Pay the $20/yr or whatever to have them host it and the whole world keeps turning.

selectodude··on US imposes sanctions on ICC hours after former judge wins Nobel Peace Prize
They’re welcome to tune out reality all they want. The damage is done. It’s too late. Convincing people of that is a waste of time.
selectodude··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
Yeah, they all do it though. And now that models are being natively trained at FP8/NVFP4, I’m not sure it matters.

Only way you can really know you’re getting the full model is to host it yourself. Every inference provider has every reason to lie and it’s impossible to find out the degree to which they are.

selectodude··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
DeepInfra does and it's the same price. That's what I use.
selectodude··on JetBrains reports revenue growth, net financial loss for 2025
I look at it as like being able to start a fire in the woods without a lighter. It’s a skill, a helpful one even on the extremely rare occasions that it’s necessary. But realistically with even the bare minimum amount of prep, not a useful one.

How many people out there can do hand lithography to make an 8086 to bootstrap computing? One?

selectodude··on The Forgetful CPU (Linux on M4)
I really do not know when I will replace my five year old M1 Pro. I'm not even starting to begin to get to the point where I start thinking about replacing this thing which I'm frankly astonished by.

I think the interesting part of that sort of success is that if/when this thing will start to lose a step (local inference would be cool, 16GB of RAM is starting to get a little tight, especially for rust builds and agentic programming), I really have no serious qualms about spending $5000+ on its replacement.

selectodude··on ICC judge on what U.S. sanctions mean for her and global courts
I would guess he supports those who do.
selectodude··on The Four Horsemen of Agentic Coding
Yeah all that time not working is spent in the slack chats. Sounds like place just sucks.
selectodude··on Micron CEO Says Memory Supply Will Be Much Tighter in 2027 and 2028 Than in 2026
They have to cover their fixed costs somehow. Collusion and cartels only get you so far. OPEC and Mexican drug cartels are still exposed to market pressures.
selectodude··on Micron CEO Says Memory Supply Will Be Much Tighter in 2027 and 2028 Than in 2026
Large tech companies like cloudflare are spending developer hours lowering memory usage because they feel the impact too.

The idea that companies should have priority price controlled access to memory puts us even deeper into a situation where we can never afford local compute ever again.

selectodude··on Prompting Claude Opus 5.5
It’s a fork of Roo Code due to Roo no longer being developed.
selectodude··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators on Earth
There aren’t many primary and secondary colors. If you plan to have a more comprehensive system you’ll run out pretty quick. Chicago comes to mind. The newest one is pink and I’m not sure what they’d do if they built a new one.
selectodude··on Search – A small, fast WebKit browser for macOS
Because the hyper-tailored vibe coded browser front end that you like might be ever so slightly different from the hyper-tailored vibe coded browser front end that I want to use.
selectodude··on Search – A small, fast WebKit browser for macOS
You don’t. LLMs make vibe coding highly customized software that operates exactly as the user wants it super easy, which is awesome. However humans still haven’t caught up to the idea that it doesn’t need to go on GitHub because if it was useful to somebody, they’d have already vibe coded it themselves.
selectodude··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
Push comes to shove, OpenAI could go out of business tomorrow and I could pick up roughly where I left off for $25k, which is the cost to serve GLM 5.3 Flash on four Nvidia GB10s. Granted, if OpenAI et al go kaput all at the same time, I could probably get a whole lot more compute for a whole lot less money.
selectodude··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
Okay? I didn’t sign a 10 year contract. We’re month to month and I use my own harness.

If they’re subsidizing my usage, that’s great.
