sillystuff··on The Fatal Flaw of 911
Israel has been regularly caught spying on the US (and nearly every other country on earth). Most of the tech used to compromise phones to attack e.g., journalists and political dissidents, is Israeli. I do not trust anything coming out of that country to run on my phone nor as part of my country's communications infrastructure. If you think a genocidal Jewish supremacist messianic expansionist settler colonial regime that terrorizes its neighbors and is engaged in an extermination campaign against its indigenous population and who regularly murders American citizens too, is good and trustworthy, that is on you.

The US elite is so intertwined with the Israeli elite and Jeffrey Epstein, that if there is light to be shed, it should be. And, I explicitly stated, "either confirming or definitively refuting". I want to know the truth, not the Israeli propaganda from our Zionist controlled government and media (e.g., Secretary of State, Rubio admitted that we went to war with Iran solely for Israel. CNN sends all stories about the region to Israel military censors to be re-written with pro-Israel spin / denied for publication, New York Times has editorial guidelines that forbid even acknowledging that Palestinians exist unless no way to write story around it-- 'genocide' is a forbidden word in stories about Palestine/Israel, etc. Axios and New York Times publish stories written by Israeli intelligence). And, I do not want conspiracy theories from people with other agendas either. The person who made the statement is an academic who is usually reliable.

sillystuff··on Israeli settlers attack olive framers & Washington Post journalist in West Bank
Large numbers of Israeli Jews are currently settling Cyprus and Argentina. Zionist President Milei even changed the law to allow private ownership of public land in Patagonia, if the lands had burned. The Israeli invaders then ensured that Patagonia is on fire. Not sure what is happening with the indigenous (pre-Columbian) population that resides in Patagonia. Cypriots are unhappy with the influx.

Internal polling in Israel had percentage of Israeli Jews who support the genocide and mass targeted murder of children as high as 98%, and 85% Of Israeli Jews want more brutality and cruelty. Even the internal polls showing the lowest percentage of support for the genocide show support by Israeli Jews greater than 90%.

sillystuff··on The Fatal Flaw of 911
I believe it has to do with the age of the 911 system. Older systems do not support remote location, microphone and camera access.

Apparently the US 911 system integrated some Israeli tech from a company founded by Israeli intelligence personnel called Reporty Homeland Security that later rebranded as Carbyne. Carbyne was headed by former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak. The company, received much of its initial funding from Jeffery Epstein and Ehud Barak.

I don't know if any of the Israeli tech is running on handsets, but it is definitely running on the back-end in the US 911 emergency call systems. The on-device portion of the 911 emergency calling that grants remote access to location, video, and microphone is part of the closed, proprietary, Google Play Services, on Android.

If running a de-googled rom, you will presumably not be sending any location data or providing other access to your phone when calling 911.

Someone who is usually reliable stated that Scott Bessent had strong ties to this company, Ahud Barrak, and Jeffery Epstien (and was instrumental in getting Carbyne's tech adopted by US 911 system). But, I have not found evidence documenting Bessent's ties to Carbyne. If someone knows more about this-- either confirming or definitively refuting, please share.

sillystuff··on War may be coming. Are we psychologically ready?
Martin Luther King Jr. famously said, that the US was the greatest purveyor of violence in the world. True then, and true today.

The ignorance of the American people enables this violence-- this is by design. William J. Casey, CIA director under Reagan, "We’ll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false". The CIA has employed many hundreds of journalists working at major networks and newspapers like CBS, the Washington Post and the New York Times.

Reading the comments on this story, it appears that much of what Europeans believe is false, as well. Someone presented a detailed and accurate account of the recent* history leading up to the illegal, but absolutely provoked, Russian invasion of Ukraine but was accused of lying. Several comments indicate a complete lack of concern about provoking the nation with the largest nuclear stockpile in the world into a direct hot conflict. Even if it stayed conventional, which appears unlikely, Russia has a much larger military than all of Western Europe combined. Insane.

* The history should start much earlier, with US assurances to Russia that NATO would not expand, and then Clinton and all subsequent US administrations betraying these promises.

sillystuff··on Ask HN: Taxes while living abroad as a US citizen
Depending on which state you are currently a resident of, you will likely owe state income tax too while you are away. If you were moving overseas as part of your salaried job, most states have safe harbor exemptions that can protect you. But, these might not apply for self employed (CA's definitely does not apply if living off passive income; i.e., you are taxed).

Changing your domicile to a no income tax state like FL, TX or SD will prevent this, if your old state agrees that your domicile changed. States will argue that you never really intended to live in the new state, that it was just an attempt to dodge taxes and they will still collect state tax (burden of proof is on you, not your old state). There is not a magic time of 6 months or 1 year in new state that automatically is accepted by old state as changing domicile. And, it does not matter if you have satisfied your new state's residency requirements. Everything depends on you convincing your old state that your domicile actually changed.

There are a ton of tax / attorney sites with articles about changing domicile properly, to reduce this risk. Horror stories like folks overseas, even for an extended period, owing state back taxes when they return are also easy to find. High income tax states like CA, NY, HI, MN, SC, VA and NM seem to show up in these horror stories more often.

Treasury Direct got back and stated that they could issue 1099-INT via telephone requests. They did not mention how they would authenticate the caller. I hope this really will work to bypass the id.me account requirement, but this is the org that requires a Medallion Stamp for minor account changes-- It seems highly unlikely they would hand out a 1099 simply because a caller claims to be John Doe 222-55-9999.

sillystuff··on Trump signs order to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America'
People withheld their votes from Harris because of her complicity in genocide, and her pledge to continue to enable genocide. It is the number one reason people who voted for Biden gave for withholding their votes from Harris. Genocide is a red line.

Withholding votes from Harris does not mean these voters then voted for Trump. Many boycotted the election. A smaller number voted 3rd party.

Harris probably would have won if she had renounced the pro-genocide policies of Biden and pledged to cease arms transfers to Israel. She only had to win a few swing states, and swing states like Michigan with a sizable population of Palestinian diaspora were undeniably lost due to her doubling down on genocide. Heavily Jewish Zionist "blue" states like New York weren't going to swing Republican, and heavily Christian Zionist "red" states were never going go to the Dems anyway.

sillystuff··on Ask HN: Good large format (>20 inches) touchscreen E-Paper display options?
> solar-powered e-ink laptop

Both 13.3" Bigme and Dasung color e-ink portable monitors require additional power than the usb (displayport alt mode) connection can provide. At ~30Hz, these e-ink displays consume more power than an equivalent sized TFT panel with bright backlight at 60Hz+.

If installing into a custom laptop shell, this dev kit might be a better option than a turnkey portable monitor (and open hardware):

https://www.crowdsupply.com/modos-tech/modos-paper-monitor#p...

Modos also has a turnkey offering (preorder):

https://www.crowdsupply.com/modos-tech/modos-flow#products

Modos states that at 40Hz or less, their 13.3" color version can be powered by the single usb (displayport alt-mode) connection, so apparently has lower power consumption than Dasung or Bigme (and Modos's maximum refresh rates are significantly higher). IMO, 30Hz is more than enough for text, though.

The color Carta e-ink panels are pretty poor in low-light (front light only partially mitigates; Carta panel looks dark and has low contrast in low light compared to a B&W panel). I don't think the B&W versions from any of these three brands have front-lights, at all though.

To get a 10" screen that has the inputs you want, and reasonable refresh rate, you might have to cobble together a compatible 10" screen + the controller in the 6" Modos kit (they state the kit's controller supports panels up to 13"); I'd reach out to the Modos folks first to ensure a supported panel. Or, maybe look for one of the e-ink ebook readers that supports being driven as a monitor (maybe 10" will be available that way? You'd end up stuck with an additional battery to maintain, and probably some closed device running locked down Android, though).

If you reduce your requirements to basically a serial terminal, inkplate (also available on Crowd Supply) has 10" versions, and you can either add your code directly to the esp32 on the driver board, or write to the display over a serial link (inkplate uses a custom protocol for serial comm, but you could make an esp32 firmware that turned one into a vt-100 compatible terminal-- please share, if you do).

sillystuff··on The Trumps' Crypto Project Just Got One Step Closer to Becoming a Bank
No. There are many reasons to not vote.

You are informed, and realize that the Gerrymandering of your district is such that your vote for representatives, literally, will not count. Your state is reliably Red or Blue, so your presidential vote, literally, will not count-- due to the Electoral College.

You are informed, and realize that a vote for either of the major party candidates, for national office, is a vote for the status quo of Imperialism, Genocide and the further gutting of the working class to transfer wealth to the already rich. E.g., Harris and Trump were both complicit in genocide. And, Harris, seeking approval of Israel and their agents in the US like AIPAC, the Ellisons, etc., stated that Iran is the greatest adversary of the U.S. There is a non-zero probability we would be fighting Israel's war on Iran even if Harris had won. Democrat Biden still has a higher death toll of murdered children and babies from enabling Israel's genocide of the indigenous Palestinians than Republican Trump, but the number of Palestinian children who's murders were enabled by Trump, is still rising.

You are informed and know that the two major parties conspired to eliminate any third-parties or independents from being able to participate in presidential debates, so, (along with oligarch control of media and campaign financing) a faithful D/R servant of the oligarchs / Israel will, likely, always end up the winner.

You are informed and know that during a multi-year Princeton/Northwestern University study, not a single piece of legislation was passed by congress that was popular with the population, that did not also have support of a wealthy entity too. And, in every case, legislation which the population opposed, but was supported by the rich/powerful was passed. I.e., congress critters are faithful servants to their masters who dole out the campaign funding-- oligarchs, corporations and Israel. The US, at the federal level, is an oligarchy but still goes through the ritual of voting to pacify the uninformed.

You were disenfranchised due to a conviction of a crime you may or may not have committed (many people in the US plead guilty to crimes they did not commit when offered a lighter [often still multi-year] sentence for pleading guilty vs. the threat of a very long sentence / death penalty, if they lose their case in court).

You were disenfranchised due to gerrymandering (redundant to a point above, but puts a finer point on the issue).

Your vote was suppressed by the closing of polling places in your low income area, so a massive number of people must share a single, inconvenient, polling location with a multi-block line. Compare to the wealthy area with multiple polling stations within a few blocks of each other.

(Per Trump's statements), In upcoming elections, heavily armed and masked Brown Shirts ^H^H^H ICE agents will be stationed at the entrance to polling places to intimidate people with too much melanin into not showing up and voting-- and, harass those who do.

...

I still vote for the local elections, but the outcomes of federal and state offices are effectively predetermined in my district/state. So, my 3rd party / independent votes don't even register with the controlling major party as a protest vote-- they don't need to care that I am dissatisfied with their rule, and they don't.

sillystuff··on TreasuryDirect: Prepare for ID.me – Your New Way to Log In
Are you suggesting that a person can request a copy of a 1099, for the current tax year, via the IRS? I don't know if this is possible. It is an interesting suggestion, if that is what you had in mind. This interpretation required steel-manning as your actual comment suggests that you may not realize that Treasury Direct and the IRS are two different things.

I contacted Treasury Direct, after receiving the email notification about their plans to migrate to id.me, asking how to get a 1099 without an id.me account. But, I haven't received any response from Treasury Direct yet.

Please tone down your aggression if you reply to this, "This is a lie." is both incorrect and highly aggressive. If, ultimately, a way is demonstrated to get access to a 1099, for a Treasury Direct account, without having to create an id.me account, that will be a good thing.

sillystuff··on Ollama: All Aboard Open Models
Just adding to your suggestion.

For those new to llama.cpp, the llama-server component running in "router mode" is fantastic; you place your common configuration in a defaults section of an ini file, and then model specific configuration in separate sections of the ini file. You can switch between models, on the fly, using the API, and the built-in web front-end for llama-server supports model switching as a drop down menu. Llama-server can just always be running, in the background (you can set an idle time for it to automatically unload weights to free vram/ram, and a maximum simultaneously running model count which will evict models on an LRU basis before loading new ones, if the count is exceeded).

llama-bench is another great tool included in llama.cpp, where you can provide ranges of options to test, and just let it run through all the variations that you requested, then take the best performing and add those settings to the ini file above.

There are a lot of optional tunables that can really improve performance with llama-server. E.g., typical average tok/sec generation speed improved over 7X for Gemma4 31B, on my laptop, with tuned batch-size / ubatch-size and enabling both spec-type draft-mtp and ngram-mod (with some custom settings on both). I.e., even though you don't need to do this for llama-server to be useful, it can be worth your while to spend a little time optimizing settings for your favorite models especially if your hardware is marginal.

sillystuff··on Never talk to the police
But, 4 is possible.

After Salinas v Texas, you must positively assert that you are exercising your right to silence, not simply remain silent.

The prosecutor in a murder trial argued, at trial, that silence of the defendant (during police questioning) was evidence of his guilt. The supreme court in Salinas v Texas allowed this.

* The defendant also selectively answered some questions, so perhaps there is nuance, but to be safe, a positive assertion of right to remain silent seems prudent.

IANAL, and would love if an actual lawyer would comment on this.

sillystuff··on Israeli soldiers using sexual assault to force Palestinians out of West Bank
> They're condemning the only democratic country

An apartheid ethno-supremacist state is, by definition, not democratic.

In the last month, the Israeli Jews passed a law to allow the death penalty, but only for non-Jews*. The Israeli lawmakers celebrated their lynching law by wearing noose shaped lapel pins. There are several 10s of laws that favor Jews over non-Jewish citizens of Israel. Palestinian citizens are, at best, second-class citizens.

Non-Israeli Palestinians who were violently driven from their homes in previous Israeli Jewish genocides of the indigenous population, do not even have a right to civilian courts. In most cases, the Israeli Jews imprison these Palestinians without charge, trial, or fixed sentence-- including young children. Rape and torture by Israeli Jews is systemic in these detention centers.

Their "democratic" process includes mobs of Jewish Knesset (parliment) members threatening, on the floor of the Knesset, the rape of Palestian Israeli members of the Knesset including, Haneen Zoabi and Sa'id Naffaa.

* The law doesn't really change anything in reality, as Jews have always been able to rape, torture and murder Palestinians with impunity-- e.g., for the year prior to 7 Oct., Israeli Jews murdered, on average, one Palestinian per day, in the West Bank. That rate is much worse now.

sillystuff··on Israeli soldiers using sexual assault to force Palestinians out of West Bank
Read up on "Operation Clean Break" / "The Clean Break Doctrine". Israeli Jews came up with a plan to overthrow Iraq, Libya, Syria, Iran... Seven states in all that the Israeli Jews wanted to destroy so they could engage in genocide of the Palestinians without opposition, and steal the land of their neighboring states for their "Greater Israel Project" (Israel refuses to declare their borders as they plan to steal more land from their neighbors and the remaining surviving Palestinians).

The fun part was that their plan was that the US would do their fighting for them. And, it worked. US wars in Iraq, Libya, Syria, Iran. Millions dead in illegal wars of aggression, all to benefit genocidal messianic religious crazies who call themselves Israeli Jews / Zionists. Many trillions of the US debt is due to these wars for Israel. The US has gained nothing from any of these wars.

Professor Jeffrey Sacks is a good source for material about this.

sillystuff··on Israeli soldiers using sexual assault to force Palestinians out of West Bank
The passive voice and dishonest language is often used by British and US corporate and state media when describing atrocities committed by Israeli Jews.

"Some Palestinians are dead." Implying, "They seem to have just died. Nobody knows what happened." To describe the countless massacres of Palestinians by Israeli Jews

E.g., the BBC reported an IDF soldier, in uniform, who was captured as a prisoner of war as, "A young girl was kidnapped by Hammas." The BBC also reported on an 8 year old little girl who was kidnapped by the IDF and held as a hostage as, "a woman who was detained."

The BBC is still at it with the Israel-US illegal war of aggression against Iran. They reported that "180 people died" in the triple-tap strike on the school that murdered 165 young children, mostly little girls. The BBC also did not mention that it was a triple-tap strike where subsequent strikes killed rescue workers, parents coming to find their children, and 10s of children who had survived the first strike.

The UK (and Germany) are as bad as the US for media and government controlled by Zionists.

Biden is an anti-abortion Catholic Zionist who wouldn't even do anything (but empty talk) to raise the minimum wage during high inflation. He enabled a genocide so his gods would reward him. I guess he would be a radical commie to the extreme far right. Nixon, JFK, LBJ and Lincoln, for example, signed into law actual left policies (whether they agreed with them or not-- none were lefties).

Words have meaning. Someone a bit left of a Nazi is not on the Left even if they are to the left of the person speaking.

The Democrats are a right-wing party. They spend more energy attacking the left than they do, the Republicans. Look at what they did to the center-left Sanders and their constant lawfare to keep left parties, like the Greens and Peace and Freedom, off the ballot and out of the debates (last election, the Greens spent half their campaign funds fighting these frivolous lawsuits from the Democratic party who seek to subvert democracy [Republicans attack anyone more left/darker than them, through voter suppression and other techniques to also subvert democracy]). I believe LOS still does userdebug builds, so you get root over adb by default. It is pretty much impossible to create a usable local backup on official no-root Graphene builds with the recommended re-locked bootloader.

I switched to Graphene with my new phone. It includes SeedVault which is unable to backup most of my apps and ADB backup works with even fewer (deprecated by Google). So only things I could sort of backup were apps that had their own config/data export options. The stupid, "we know best" restrictions from being able to copy between user profiles also made backup and restoring a PITA (upstream android stupidity, not Graphene specific) It was a few days later before I was back to where I was before having to restore stock OS to get a warranty repair (GrapheneOS does not include repair mode or some such thing that the Google service place required). If I was still on a rooted phone, it would have taken a few minutes to restore everything.

sillystuff··on Remotely unlocking an encrypted hard disk
> As the decrypted key is in memory before the reboot, can’t it just be written to a know location in memory and have kexec be instructed to read it early on?

I set up what you are suggesting (sort of anyway[1]) on a personal VPS to reboot after updates, that require one. I just generate an initrd in tmpfs that contains a keyfile[2] and kexec with that ephemeral initrd; The newest kernel can be found by looking at what the /boot/vmlinuz symlink points to. Been running this for years. It is 100% reliable, and simple. And, for the purposes of this box, secure enough.

For remote unlocks from initial power on, Debian has had that since forever using keyscripts and dropbear in the initrd.

[1] You could pull the key from memory, and use that to unlock the disk from within the generated initrd, but it would be more work than just setting up a keyfile in advance. It was my first thought as well.

[2] Easiest way was to use a mount namespace to use a diff crypttab file that points to the keyfile, since cannot specify crypttab location when creating the initrd. E.g.,

  unshare --mount sh -c "mount --bind $CRYPTTAB_KEXEC $CRYPTTAB; mkinitramfs -o $kexec_initramfs $kernel"
(mkinitramfs is usually wrapped by update-initramfs, but calling it directly allows specifying a location)

Accessibility is apparently a big problem with wayland. E.g., the most popular / ?only? app that supports hardware eye trackers on Linux does not work with wayland, and states that it likely never will as wayland does not provide what it needs to add support (it is also the most popular app for voice/noise control). Even basic things like screen readers are apparently still an issue with wayland. Without a strong accessibility story, systems running wayland would have been banned at my last employer (a college).

Personally, I have a 3200x2400 e-ink monitor that has a bezel that covers the outer few columns of pixels. I use a custom modeline to exclude those columns from use. And, a fractional scaling of .603x.5 on this now 3184x2400 monitor to get 1920x1200 effective resolution. Zero idea how to accomplish this with wayland-- I do not think it is possible, but if anyone knows a way, I am all ears.

I ran into, at least, ten issues without solutions/work-arounds (like the issue with my monitor) when I tried to switch this year, after getting a new laptop. Reverted to a functional, and productively familiar, setup with X.
