simongr3dal··on Citroen revives the 2CV for an electric age
The twingo is for sale and on the road already.
simongr3dal··on We're working on a new RuneScape MMO
In theory you could make a game where you’re max level everything from the start, but I think the pointlessness of that is obvious. The journey is the game to an extent, and the low attention requirements allow us to dream of all the possible efficiencies.
simongr3dal··on SK Hynix CEO sees memory chip shortage lasting until 2030
Why not? The income statements can’t lie. And if those fall short of expectations then the stock market is also gonna grill you.
simongr3dal··on iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses will remain on icloud.com
But the private relay domain is only used when you sign up through “Sign in with Apple”? A thing you have to support if your iOS app already supports sign up with other third party authentication providers.
simongr3dal··on As a Windows user, it's a surreal way to install a program
Some apps used the disk image as a simple way to bundle up a little “installer”. This is lost by sending a .zip file.

The disk image could put a background image with instruction visual, decide the visual placement of icons. Applications could include folders with brush packs, example documents, user manuals and such.

The fact that it was a disk image could be seen as confusing if you read that closely, but if you ignore the file type it was simply an icon that you could double click to open a piece of installer UI.

simongr3dal··on Timeline Scan – AI fixes the dates on your scanned photos
The last one seems like it could also be problematic, how do you distinguish the 1960s decade from the literal year 196. In this case it’s kind of obvious since photography wasn’t very popular in the year 196.
simongr3dal··on Springer Nature has removed two studies by Max Planck
I think plagiarism in academia is mostly concerned with morality, not so much legality, i.e. copyright law isn't really what we're considering here.
simongr3dal··on Big AI labs are hiring philosophers
Getting the feeling that Socrates had a different definition for "powerful" than most.
simongr3dal··on Algorithmic Monocultures in Hiring
Lots of people have a hard time just freebasing in an abstract conversation about how they work and storytelling “My Journey” type stuff but work just fine in an actual team setting with concrete products, features, and problems to think and talk about.
simongr3dal··on Moving beyond fork() + exec()
That’s funny, but most new cpus today have more L3 cache than those computers had memory and disk space combined.
simongr3dal··on Bun support is now limited and deprecated
THey need to provide all the API's that nodeJS provides. I'm sure nodejs has a lot of lines too even though they also have the js engine as a library.
simongr3dal··on I Spent My Sabbatical Building a Power Meter for Sledgehammers
Kind of like how “Stuff Made Here” has devolved into mark rober content.
simongr3dal··on AI chatbots could be making you stupider
I hope you count "stimulating our minds for either learning or imaginative purposes" as one of those outcomes because if you only count "work produced and kpis met" as an outcome then that sounds pretty bleak.
simongr3dal··on Boneyard: Generate pixel-perfect skeleton screens from your real DOM
Their doc linked at the bottom actually has a pretty nice example.

https://boneyard.vercel.app/how-it-works

simongr3dal··on Exploring PostgreSQL 18's new UUIDv7 support
I believe the concern is if your primary key in the database is a serial number it might be exposed to users unless you do extra work to hide that ID from any external APIs and if there are any flaws in your authorization checks it can allow enumeration attacks exposing private or semi-private info. With UUIDs being virtually unguessable that makes it less of a concern.
simongr3dal··on AV2 video codec delivers 30% lower bitrate than AV1, final spec due in late 2025
I feel like there are probably cinematic film-making tricks you can use to imply a very dark scene without serving #111 pixels all over the screen.
simongr3dal··on Denmark close to wiping out cancer-causing HPV strains after vaccine roll-out
Because HN is not really a forum geared towards sarcastic quips unless they are extraordinarily funny.
simongr3dal··on Denmark is returning 15% of its farmland back to nature
Farmland is approximately 2/3 of the country. Most is being used for animal feed and then the animals are exported. I think we’ll make due.
simongr3dal··on Americans' love affair with big cars is killing them
Those vehicles typically have many more axles and double-wide wheels to distribute the load.
simongr3dal··on I kind of like rebasing
You sort of get that if you're consistent in working on a separate branch, rebasing, and keeping the merge commit when you finally merge.
simongr3dal··on Creating a Safari webarchive from the command line
It is proprietary, but it's not like it's difficult to decode or interpret.
simongr3dal··on AI Books4 Dataset for training LLMs further
Around 250GB, several terabytes once uncompressed I assume.
simongr3dal··on On Terry A. Davis
Thanks for posting. The rest of the blog is also short and sweet, I’m struggling a bit with self worth and self criticism so I found it very touching and relatable.

It’s kind of interesting how I’ve come to expect blog posts to be much longer since microblogging pretty much exists exclusively on social media.

simongr3dal··on Cops can force suspect to unlock phone with thumbprint, US court rules
How long before some court declares such practice equal to evidence tampering or obstruction?
simongr3dal··on Show HN: Kyoo – Self-hosted media browser (Jellyfin/Plex alternative)
In my memory of Plex on my Apple TV device it was off by default and hidden in an advanced menu or something. Not impossible by any means, just annoying.
simongr3dal··on Show HN: Kyoo – Self-hosted media browser (Jellyfin/Plex alternative)
I’m using Infuse as well, and it’s pretty amazing. The main thing that Infuse does differently from all the others is that it always does Direct Play (in Plex parlance) so you don’t need anything powerful or power hungry to be hosting the video.

Most devices that will play video these days are powerful enough to do the decoding themselves and have the bandwidth available.

simongr3dal··on Which word begins with "y" and looks like an axe in this picture? (2017)
I like the yellow theory. Looks like the top of a paint can spraying some yellow paint.
simongr3dal··on Anytype – local-first, P2P Notion alternative
They could try the WebKit strategy [1]; a strict policy against performance regression:

> We adhere to a simple directive for all work we do on WebKit: The way to make a program faster is to never let it get slower.

simongr3dal··on Does any outside service check the integrity of the content on Web Archive?
How exactly would you check if a webpage in the Wayback Machine precisely matches a thing that used to be? You would also have to trust whoever checks them.
simongr3dal··on M1/M2 Macs Have Bluetooth Issues with the Mouse, Cursor, and Magic Trackpad 2
I have definitely seen that behaviour on my M1 MacBook Air, though not recently.

At the time I tried to do a screen recording but it didn’t show up. I figure it’s some weird hardware acceleration thing with the cursor that gets borked after a bad wake up.
