skate22··on Ask HN: What did you learn the hard way?
I just kept mine in my room
skate22··on Strap on the Fitbit: John Hancock to sell only interactive life insurance
What if you can't afford the operation because you're uninsured. Also i have insurance to mitigrate the risk of big loss, not increase it
skate22··on Bullshit Jobs
> "A rational society at our current stage of development would be celebrating job destruction, not creation."

Destruction of jobs in our current society would mean bad things for many people.

I understand what you were going for, but society is not at that point yet imo

skate22··on How Facebook, Apple and Microsoft Are Contributing to OpenStreetMap
Google's business location coverage in suburban areas is far better than OSM from my XP...by a longshot
skate22··on The neglected benefits of the commute
Less than half, i spend 9 to 10 hours at the office, and I'm saving towards a house (extra cash from cheaper rent)
skate22··on The neglected benefits of the commute
My commute often leaves me feeling exhausted & annoyed (2 hours each way, half on the train)

The main positive thing that came from this commute was reading for pleasure (somthing I was not doing beforehand)

I don't try to max productivity on the commute, and my mental health thanks me for that

skate22··on Huawei Caught Faking Smartphone Photo with a DSLR
My favorite is when someone in an ad says "I'm not an actor"
skate22··on Ask HN: How do I choose between software engineering and data science?
At many DS jobs you will be working closely with developers

Where I work we prefer DS canidates that have some SE background and could comfortably deploy a model (even if it's just to heroku)

We pass on a lot of really smart DS applicants who havent had the SE xp, simply because many of them would take a lot longer to get up to speed

This is just one data point, and some DS jobs probably wont require the SE xp, but hope it helps & best of luck!

skate22··on More Americans report near-constant cannabis use
The number of users reporting regular use doesn't necessarily mean more people are using

I feel much more comfortable talking about useage now that it's legal & more socially accepted, but legality did not influence the frequency of useage for me or the friends i knew who smoke weed

skate22··on Insurance copays are higher than the cost of the drug about 25% of the time
Slightly off topic, but you can order glasses (frames and lenses) for under $10 on zennioptical.com

Ive ordered my last 3 pairs there, and will never pay $200 for glasses again

skate22··on Australians who won't unlock their phones could face ten years in jail
Doesnt seem very different than flushing stuff down the toilet when you see the cops pull up to your door with a search warrent
skate22··on Bleak New Estimates in Drug Epidemic: A Record 72,000 Overdose Deaths in 2017
I'm shocked that cigs are still legal. Everyone i know got hooked when under age & many of them have tried to quit before reaching legal age.

Cigs are a product for kids

skate22··on Ask HN: How to learn to sleep on your back?
It's much harder to choke in your sleep if you're on your side (especially important if you've been drinking)
skate22··on Bullshit-sensitivity predicts prosocial behavior
Not surprising that people who pick up on bullshit would be less likely to donate to a "non proffit" where many execs make over 1m a year

skate22··on Controlling electric signals in the body could help it heal
Hope Pence doesn't get any ideas.. (joking)
skate22··on Ask HN: How can I prepare for a coding interview in a week?
Glassdoor is a decent website to guage the type of questions you'll get during an interview for a specific position.

Ive had interviews that re use the exact same questions (fortune 100 companies)

skate22··on Tokyo medical school admits changing results to exclude women
So first: most jobs require you to do a lot of stuff that you may not agree with or feel is useful. I don't want to work with the person who is going to only do what they want when they want. At the end of the day the work needs to get done.

Secondly: any school that has GPA is essentially holding a contest. Many job postings consider GPA and may use it as a tiebreaker between 2 canidates from school X. It's not a perfect metric by any means, but it is relevant in the world today for new hires.

Work in the real world is largely the ability to deliver on expectations.

skate22··on Tokyo medical school admits changing results to exclude women
The reality is that you should be learning how to prove, not memorizing proofs.

The student who was most prepared would be able to derive proofs (by the process that was taught, like knowing to apply a theorom, or being comforatable with induction, etc) in a timely manner.

The exam is there to see how well you grasp the material taught, not how good at winging it you are (which is a very useful skill of course, but not the one being tested)

skate22··on Bail has become a way to lock up the poor regardless of guilt or threat
all of those other things you listed are already in place and cost people time & dignity (which enough money can offset the cost of)

It needs to sting for everyone, not just the poor.

Do you reject higher tax brackets for the wealthy under that same line of reasoning?

Surely wealth is an important factor in deciding what people owe to society

skate22··on Tokyo medical school admits changing results to exclude women
Perhaps that person does have better problem skills, but who knows if someone also derived it faster within the time frame

Perhaps that person also makes a habit of not preparing & just winging it (Which is fine until it's not)

skate22··on Tokyo medical school admits changing results to exclude women
Grades are relative though.

I'm not saying the person that came to the proof with 30 mins extra is not smart, but they were not able to meet the same expectation as the other students.

If everyone gets a 50, the grades will scale, and your final grade will depend on how you performed compared to the rest

I've brute forced a few proofs, and if i had done so in overtime, i would 100% stand by my viewpoint that i deserve less points than the student next to me who met the expectation.

In an interview it's different too, because you have not been preparing for a clearly defined expectation for 3 months.

Now on the other hand, if you were to argue for completely untimed exams, i can get behind that. I really enjoyed some of my take home CS finals, and it really let me perfect my solution to the best of my ability.

It really depends on what expectation is set (imo)

skate22··on Bail has become a way to lock up the poor regardless of guilt or threat
I have gotten exactly 1 speeding ticket in my life.

It was for $200 in highschool and it stung.

If i got that same speeding ticket now, it would not sting nearly as much, and i would probably be over it by the time i went to work the next morning.

skate22··on Snap’s Drop in Active Users Could Signal a Social Media Peak
Snapchat used to work lag free on my device. Now it lags so much that it takes over a minute to launch the app, take & send 1 pic.

Might not be the app's fault, but that's the reason i don't use it much

skate22··on Tokyo medical school admits changing results to exclude women
> "In a CS exam, you either know the answer or you do not."

This is simply not true. Consider an algorithm proof, with enough time you might be able to derive a proof that you should have known cold.

The real world does have deadlines & performance matters, and the women who spent the time studying should get the better grade

skate22··on Bail has become a way to lock up the poor regardless of guilt or threat
A $50 ticket is not going to deter bill gates from speeding.

The goal of a speeding ticket is not to collect $50, it is to save lives by detering people from speeding..

skate22··on False Advertising for College Is Pretty Much the Norm
I really like CS don't get me wrong, but I would not have majored in it if I could get the same ROI on somthing I enjoyed more.
skate22··on Study Finds Increased Incarceration Has Marginal-To-Zero Impact on Crime
I'm not disputing the stats you linked, and i agree prison is no where close to a good solution. My follow up comment was regarding:

"I'm confident she did drugs in prison"

where you disputed this single data point. I did not mean it was representative of the majority.

Prison was mainly only good for the lives she was destroying in her downward spiral.

But don't be fooled thinking rehab will be that scalpal. Many rehab facilities are privately owned and corrupt.

Her mother is now completely broke from trying to pay for rehab & she was still able to use there & make more addict friends (new roomates after rehab)

skate22··on Study Finds Increased Incarceration Has Marginal-To-Zero Impact on Crime
She came out clean and relapsed several months later, but who am i to argue with your links
skate22··on Study Finds Increased Incarceration Has Marginal-To-Zero Impact on Crime
She came out clean, it just only lasted a few months.
skate22··on Study Finds Increased Incarceration Has Marginal-To-Zero Impact on Crime
She has been to rehab, and she was able to get drugs & pregnant while there.

I think you are underestimating the power of a heroin addiction and overestimating the effectiveness of rehab in the US, especially for unwilling participants
