smallnix··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
No, let them paint.
smallnix··on All you need is Wide Events, not "Metrics, Logs and Traces"
With AWS this compares to EMF with (additional) properties?

You get logs with full content + metrics you can query.

Or am I missing something?

smallnix··on JetBrains Thinkrail
But why read it? Just point your agent at it and use your personalized project exploration skill.
smallnix··on OpenShell – A safe, private runtime for fleets of autonomous AI agents
> Agents are most useful when they can read files, install packages, call APIs, and use credentials. OpenShell gives them that capability without giving them unrestricted access to your data, secrets, or network.

To me this obfuscates an oxymoron: the more access you give the agent the more capable it becomes. You can't have you cake and eat it, this tool allows to strike a balance I guess. But the blurp reads like it can do it all, but now secure. That can't be true.

smallnix··on Man discovers his parents' coffee machine used 1TB of data in 10 days
Maybe they want to save their extraction & profile curves per recipe in the cloud or something. Or for less advanced devices, simply notifications to change the filter I guess.

I did not know that this topic has been subject to research.

smallnix··on The lamps in my house
Yes, Ikea copies iconic designer lamps often very closely. I thinks its great, but also love to have some select pieces as functional art.
smallnix··on The lamps in my house
I love iconic minimal lamps too. I never saw the Lampe de Bureau nor the Kismas Lamp 01, love them! You might like the Muuto Post.

Perhaps because her goal wasn't to become a better writer, but because she wanted to get her view out there?
smallnix··on Prisma's pgbouncer=true on Supabase made every query 4 round-trips (postmortem)
> The crash and the slowness turned out to be unrelated. The crash is the short story; the slowness is the one worth writing down.

And that's not slop, it's the real smoking load bearing foot gun.

smallnix··on We got admin access to Baseten's production GitHub in 25 minutes
The bot snippets talk claudish. I'd say Opus 5. But they must be Cyber Verification Program approved by Anthropic I suppose for the LLM not to block them.
smallnix··on I-have-ADHD: A skill to stop coding agents from burying the answer

It does take the idea further by anchoring the design system in real world objects.

smallnix··on Being Ambitious and Being a Dad
> setting clear rules on time with kids (weekday dinners, weekends prioritize family) and

Are these examples or an exhaustive list? Eating dinner during the week is.. not a lot. So I assume it's about setting time limits for these activities?

smallnix··on Government sponsored study on alcohol doesn't stand up to scrutiny
Because risk/benefit assessment is different from person to person.

Since you map each breadcrumb of the path, how do you deal with differing lengths that would be more appropriate?
smallnix··on JDK 27 G1/Parallel/Serial GC Changes
> selecting something else depending on arcane environmental conditions was more of a burden than an advantage

What is being referred to here? Does "else" refer to ZGC, Shenandoah?

What does arcane env conditions mean?

smallnix··on Why Tiny JPEGs Look Different in Chrome
Would be nifty if they only did that partial scaling when there's little memory available.
smallnix··on The brain may be about to have its Ozempic moment
It's in the article no?

> Orexin antagonists (which block the molecules’ actions rather than mimicking it, and thus promote sleep), have been available since 2014 as treatments for insomnia. They work differently from conventional sleeping pills, which enhance GABA, one of the brain’s main inhibitory neurotransmitters. Birgitte Kornum, an expert on orexins at the University of Copenhagen, says such pills induce sedation rather than natural sleep and often lose effectiveness with continued use. Orexin antagonists instead turn down the brain’s wakefulness signal, letting its sleep-promoting systems take over. Evidence suggests this produces better sleep, with less risk of dependence and fewer long-term problems.

smallnix··on São Paulo resident transforms degraded area into urban forest
Right, all these non-obsessed fanatics wasted their life. And don't get me even started on non-fanatics!
smallnix··on Aristotle quotes on virtue, knowledge, and happiness
By 'destined' I assume you mean 'there was never a way their life would play out other than them becoming slaves'. But the word 'meant' and 'destiny' carry a meaning of "it is the right thing to happen", which I think we all agree is not the case.
smallnix··on Top amputation surgeon had own legs removed due to fetish. Were patients safe?
There's the component of suffering for sure, but I think being a functional member of society is the most important. So if you don't annoy anyone with your abnormalities you are more likely to be considered sane.
smallnix··on RFC 8890 – The Internet is for End Users (2020)
I assume they have their own index of the web. Or perhaps there are companies where you can buy such indices. And then mix and match those, perhaps with your own too.

Data is basically their business.

smallnix··on Truth is not a direction: a Tarski attack on LLM probes
It's from a sci-fi novel, I forgot to add the quote and edited it in.

While I understood the idea of shared beliefs for particular cases (god, money), being presented with the full concept was very interesting (that was for me when reading hararis 'Sapiens').

The gotcha really is, that our massive use of LLMs creates new weird shared beliefs en passent

smallnix··on Truth is not a direction: a Tarski attack on LLM probes
> The set-up assumes that the game and life are the same thing, and such is the pervasive nature of the idea of the game within the society that just by believing that, they make it so.

smallnix··on Book Corners: Community map of neighborhood book exchange spots
With the difference that with time you get free credit automatically. Perhaps somewhat comparable to optimistic unchoking in BitTorrent :)
smallnix··on Book Corners: Community map of neighborhood book exchange spots
Free membership which accumulates points. These can be spent on books. Books are priced in points according to a metric (TBD). Bad books are 0 points. You can also get points by bringing in good books.

(It's like uh some kind of currency based barter dude ;) )
