smolyeet··on YouTube punishes ad-blocker users with slower videos on non-Chrome browsers
people have been using ad blockers for years, which probably prompted showing the more annoying ads. the option is use an adblocker or buy premium. if people are unwilling to do either, then just don't use the platform.
smolyeet··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
But that’s too much work. I’d rather do nothing, and just complain about it
smolyeet··on Privacy is priceless, but Signal is expensive
Does it matter. 70% of something is better than 100% of nothing.
smolyeet··on New devices could change the way we measure blood pressure
Yeah but if uhh if I could add it to a device that I already wear and it monitors passively that’s a game changer. I’d effectively be able to have it checked more often and while I’m asleep so as someone else said I can see what might be influencing any changes over time. It’s doesn’t have to replace what works if you don’t want to but adding it to tech we already use is a good thing in the long run.
smolyeet··on Netflix's cloud gaming service begins tests in U.S.
It already is. And it’s actually pretty good. It’s not there for multiplayer (least to me) but single player games are absolutely fine now. Xcloud is pretty good and people say GeForce now is even better.
smolyeet··on The Taylor Swift economy is unstoppable
If you’re a fan of a popular artist you should probably expect to pay this. Not sure if that’s the case here but tickets are usually more affordable at first but then they get scalped instantly. It’s most of the reason I haven’t gone to a concert in recent years

TS recently caused Ticketmaster to crash because so many people were ordering and Ticketmaster couldn’t handle it. TS is huge

smolyeet··on YouTube: Adblockers violate YouTube's terms of service
What kind of mental gymnastics? You think you’re entitled to use a service with an adblocker instead of the service they offer supported by ads/subscription? So you just want to use a service for free?
smolyeet··on iPhone 15: users of Pro and Pro Max models complain of overheating issues
Idk what this has to do with the issue though. I mean sure wait on launch for bugs, but how often you upgrade a phone is irrelevant.

In the last 6 you get 5g, 120hz, usb c, more ram.

smolyeet··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf
There’s also nextdns which I was planning on switching to anyways
smolyeet··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
Waze is a decent alternative, if not mostly for the community driven aspect of it. Sometimes it’s too aggressive to save 1-2 minutes but it knows tolls , when they’re open, and just as accurate if not more than google maps at times
smolyeet··on Car Bloat: “Huge Cars Are Terrible for Society”
But then you’d have to drive a minivan
smolyeet··on “Absurd”: Google, Amazon rebuked over unsupported Chromebooks still for sale
While I use an iPhone and would recommend it , you could easily get a phone like the pixel , one plus , etc that support lineageos or other 3rd party roms and that will keep support years after the vendor does. I will probably go that route next time because it’s not like the phone is unusable or slow after no more updates.
smolyeet··on Mozilla VPN: CVE-2023-4104: vpndaemon wrongly implements Polkit authentication
Unless you need port forwarding. I switched to ovpn for that very reason.
smolyeet··on FCC allows blocking traffic from robocall-friendly provider One Owl
The feature they’re referring to , the phone won’t even ring and send the caller straight to voicemail. You won’t know you got the call unless you happen to be looking at the screen.
smolyeet··on Google is already pushing WEI into Chromium
I don’t think this indicative of chrome being bad on Mac. What did you try to resolve the issue?

Because I could say chrome always works for me (which would be true in my experience), but that doesn’t mean it always does.

smolyeet··on A patch to enable Windows Subsystem for Android to run on Windows 10
The reception of 10 was pretty good and a step in the right direction from the tablet/desktop aio that was 8 and 8.1. Plus it was free and didn’t have as many restriction to upgrade as say 11. It was a challenge for enterprise but people adopted 10 fairly quickly. Even if you google the stats of it :

smolyeet··on Pi-hole: Network-wide ad blocking
I finally ended up setting up my own router with opnsense which you can do for pretty cheap. Either a pc with two ports, a vm on a server if you are into that , or going dedicated hardware like mentioned above. If you really want to understand what goes on your network this is the way to go.
smolyeet··on Pi-hole: Network-wide ad blocking
I just wish TVs were just the panel without all the smart features. I only use the Apple TV anyways.
smolyeet··on Xbrowsersync – open-source Bookmark Synching
If it helps , these two extensions are helpful

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/checkmarks-we... clean up links and fav icons ( good for first time install for not making the toolbar as ugly with blank icons)

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bookmarks-cle... helps get rid of bookmarks with a few feature from the first one

smolyeet··on Spotifyd
Well , it’s either I listen to it using this easy platform for us common folk, or I don’t listen to them at all. Or i pirate. It’s not that deep , you can get off your high horse.
smolyeet··on Atom was archived today
Or the vast amount of plugins and community support. Using atom over vscode hasn’t really made sense for a few years now , and I loved atom
smolyeet··on Epic games CEO Tim Sweeney thinks ‘every politician should fear’ Apple’s power
Can’t push an app with a 3rd party store as an option. Can’t install outside the AppStore. I think the argument for some regulation is fair. The mobile space is restrictive at the end of the day and users lose because of it.
smolyeet··on An extensive tutorial on how to setup a Pi-Hole
If you’d like a gui, portainer is a nice way to manage all of your docker compose files as stacks
smolyeet··on IMGZ – Paid image sharing
Yeah I was having the same problem. If he posted I host images , people would probably be less likely to join. People just like to complain about nothing
smolyeet··on Show HN: We built an end-to-end encrypted alternative to Google Photos
There's more you can do honestly. Search and and assign people so you can find picture with just them. This also works for pets. People, pets , objects, place, etc. Hell, I searched the car I use to drift and it showed up. It's really neat.
smolyeet··on Joe Rogan, confined to Spotify, is losing influence
I don't think so, least in part. Spotify is continuously petty against apple (for good reason) but their users always have to pay the price and not have features or get them super late. The Spotify app on an Android is pretty good and can't really notice too much difference upon switching back. They've really downsized their app a lot across all three platforms.
smolyeet··on Twitter starts to require login to view tweets
Keyword here being some
smolyeet··on My mouse driver is asking for a firewall exemption (2019)
Not everything has malicious content , stop pushing this narrative
smolyeet··on iDOS 2 will be gone soon
Or just switch to a platform that allows third party apps
smolyeet··on More than 30 states sue Google over 'extravagant' fees in Play store
If your app doesn't make over a certain amount. Large apps still have to
