somsak2··on Congestion pricing in Manhattan is a predictable success
i think it's the opposite right? people that didn't mind spending an hour in traffic are now unwilling to pay $9.
somsak2··on Estrogen: A Trip Report
> At smoothbrains.net, we hold as self-evident the right to put whatever one likes inside one’s body

appreciate seeing this. I've long identified as someone that's much more muscular than I have been in the past. it's interesting how steroid use for this subset is seen as so different from that same use in the gender dysphoria subset.

trading one drug for another?
somsak2··on Hard-to-swallow truths they won't tell you about software engineer job
#10 should be near the top. hugely important
somsak2··on Major outages across ChatGPT and API
I don't think it's so dire. I've gone through this at multiple companies and a startup that's selling B2B only needs one or two of these big outages and then enterprises start demanding SLA guarantees in their contracts. it's a self correcting problem
somsak2··on Seeing like a bank
I've heard alot of great reviews of this book but personally found it pretty disappointing.

somsak2··on New models and developer products
Any examples?
somsak2··on New models and developer products
It seems like the "Turbo" models are more about being faster/cheaper, not so much about being better. Kinda similar to the iPhone "S" models or Intel's "tick-tock"
somsak2··on New models and developer products
Was there an assertion that it doesn't?
somsak2··on New models and developer products
I don't know if I'd say "miles ahead." AWS had 7 years of basically no other competition -- all of the other big clouds of today had their heads in the sand. OpenAI has a bunch of people competing already. They may not be as good on the leaderboards now, but they're certainly not having to play catch up from years of ignoring the space.
somsak2··on New models and developer products
How do you square this with OpenAI's assertion that they never use data from enterprise customers for their own training? Are you suggesting they're lying?
somsak2··on New models and developer products
piece of feedback: it's weird to have a drop-down on "OpenAPI Links" when there are no other options.
somsak2··on Young people would sacrifice other perks for a 4-day workweek
Mind me asking how many hours that is? Does it include meetings?
somsak2··on Young people would sacrifice other perks for a 4-day workweek
source for this? what I've seen suggests that this trend isn't growing more than it historically has been.
somsak2··on Young people would sacrifice other perks for a 4-day workweek
You used a single personal data point and then pulled numbers completely out of nowhere and are comfortable making general statements about housing affordability on that basis? Bold.
somsak2··on Young people would sacrifice other perks for a 4-day workweek
> why won't I just hire good English-speaking talent in Costa Rica (more likely Brazil) at a tenth of your expected comp?

you can try! but you'll find that this is basically impossible -- the folks that are good enough aren't going to take 1/10th of the comp they could be making.

somsak2··on Reflections on quitting my job
>I recognise this is an incredibly privileged thing to do, not working is something that many people can only dream of.

It's crazy how often you see this kind of statement these days. I often wonder if it's made in earnest or mostly to avoid a culture war about privilege happening in the comments. Would love to see the Google Trends data on this

somsak2··on California employers must reimburse remote workers for all necessary expenses
Very interesting how a company run by irrational humans can be counted on to make "economically rational" decisions!
somsak2··on Copying Angry Birds with nothing but AI
It's interesting how most don't consider programmers artists, even though coding requires quite a bit of creativity.
somsak2··on Copying Angry Birds with nothing but AI
What music? There is none.
somsak2··on Google Brain founder says big tech is lying about AI danger
covid a great recent example of this
somsak2··on Google Brain founder says big tech is lying about AI danger
human-driven cars kill people all the time too. and the stock thing from 2010 isn't AI, just algorithmic trading.

not the most convincing of arguments

somsak2··on Giving a Shit as a Service (2022)
Right, and the reason "everyone" has confidence in just waiting a bit for it to go back up without panicking and having to try to find an alternative is precisely because GitHub and AWS have on-call engineers that are alerted and immediately work on fixing it.
somsak2··on 'It's quite soul-destroying': how we fell out of love with dating apps
>you wont find animals falling into existential dread and despair because they haven't gotten laid yet (or recently)

I don't think I've heard of any animal falling into existential dread or despair, for any reason. But quality of life is absolutely impacted by ability to breed.

somsak2··on Giving a Shit as a Service (2022)
If you work at a company on a team with a user-facing surface, you need to have an on-call rotation. Consumer expectations of uptime are extremely high and there's no way to build software that ensures 100% reliability without any human intervention.
somsak2··on Poll: What are the gender demographics of HN?
"this site just has too many blacks on it"

see how that's problematic?

somsak2··on Poll: What are the gender demographics of HN?
Ever since I've started seeing outright discrimination against males in tech, I've adjusted by always answering prefer not to say / other.
somsak2··on U.S. GDP grew at a 4.9% annual pace in the third quarter, better than expected
> prices have not returned to pre-pandemic levels

Are you saying people are expecting CPI deflation? I don't think that's accurate, and it's also definitely not gonna happen.

somsak2··on Loyal workers are selectively and ironically targeted for exploitation
I wouldn't necessarily say that wanting to pay an employee less is "exploitive," just as I wouldn't label an employee's desire to make more an attempt to exploit the company either. I'm just saying that those are opposing goals that are going to make it difficult to build a fully aligned relationship between the two parties.

Not sure I really understand how this position relates to the Dark Triad concept. I thought that these days DT was really only bandied about by people in the pick-up community with something to sell to frustrated men.
