sourweasel··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
In addition to the Aptera, I think there's a potential market for the enclosed 2-wheel vehicles also like the MonoRacer. The aerodynamic efficiency gains of enclosed cabin motorcycles is huge and greatly improves range, especially at highway speeds. I'd like to see something similar at a lower price range and produced in greater volume.

sourweasel··on DiscImageStudio: burn visible artwork onto CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs
I can't comment on this particular project, but I know that similar projects have allowed adding images to the unused portions of the disc. A given region of the disc cannot be both image and data, but the disc can contain an inner region of data and imagery in the outer unused portion.
sourweasel··on Cisco gives engineer unlimited AI tokens to rewrite legacy code
Movie? I prefer to think of it as a documentary made in advance.
sourweasel··on Danish Government silently drops plan to dump MS Office
>…That has not had an actual release for something like 12 years

The last OpenOffice release was 10 days ago. Not 12 years.

sourweasel··on New plastic pollution discovered: 'Plasticorals' coral rubble fused with plastic
I can attest that the soya-based wiring can be a nightmare in some locales. A family member bought a new Acura in the 2010s and the car was a constant target of the local rat population that would climb into the engine bay and fill up on wiring insulation like it was gummy candy. He had the wiring harnesses replaced several times but ultimately gave up and sold it after the final repair.

It seems like they could incorporate capsaicin and other deterrents into the polymers, but that probably isn't pleasant for individuals involved in the production process.

sourweasel··on Llama.cpp on a jailbroken PS5: run any GGUF model natively on the console
Exactly, that's what I was getting at. It's similar to Intel chip production and binning. Take Skylake for example: if a 4 core i7 chip had a core that didn't pass testing, they would disable the bad core and one more and process the chip as an i3. i5 chips were just i7 silicon with hyperthreading disabled. Same chip fab, same production cost, but the failed chips became a lower tier that sold for 35% and 70% of the top tier product. In the case of the PS5 chips, the performance difference between binned and pristine chips was even less, it still had 75% of the cores usable.
sourweasel··on Llama.cpp on a jailbroken PS5: run any GGUF model natively on the console
The PS5 hardware is essentially identical to the AMD BC-250 mining rig, with the major difference being that the media engine (VCN for encoding/decoding video) is disabled in the miner because it requires Sony's proprietary bios. The BC-250 was created from binned chips that didn't meet Sony's specs and had 2 of 8 cores disabled, but many users successfully re-enabled them and bumped active CUs on the GPU from 24 to 40.

To your point, it was briefly possible to buy them for under $100 until word spread that they make decent steam machines, so I'm guessing that Sony doesn't need to sell any games to turn a profit. Even at their current prices it would be far cheaper to use the BC-250 for local inference.

sourweasel··on LFM2.5-24B-A2B: Built for fast on-device agents
Have you tried Gemma-4 26BA4B? I feel like it is underrated for tasks like that, but maybe I've just been lucky with my use cases.
sourweasel··on Show HN: How random are you?
That audio sample was used in a song by Pogo! I wondered which episode that was from.

sourweasel··on Direct retinal projection display for smart glasses using a meta-optic mirror
Asteroids is classic, but for monochrome vector games I would vote for the tank-vs-tank game 'Battlezone', especially if they could do separate images per eye and allow for stereoscopic rendering.

Hopefully they add a color model so we can play Tempest.

sourweasel··on Gemini 4 Argon (High): Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
I noticed this recently with the user submitted benchmarks on Kaggle. For these obscure tests that the models haven't seen, Gemini 3.8 is often on par or beating other frontier models. Gemini is a bit shite at the game checkers though, for some weird reason it performs poorly on those benchmarks.
sourweasel··on MicroLLM Lab – Try 7 tiny LLM's in the browser
I would recommend adding the MiniCPM5-1B model. Surprisingly coherent for a 1B model and performs well. On my pixel 9 I get 33 tok/s on CPU. On GPU I get about 26 tok/s but prefill jumps to nearly 500.
sourweasel··on Thelio Mira AI Linux Workstation: 192 GB GPU Memory
I've noticed that some companies have flat out dropped the high memory configurations from their lineup that were offered just months ago at inflated prices. OnePlayerX had a 128GB Strix Halo tablet, RedMagic had a 24GB Android phone - both have been removed from their sites. It's a similar situation for the new Thinkpad lineup.
sourweasel··on Ask HN: Are others seeing Google's reCAPTCHA rejecting Firefox users?
Same experience for me. I get endless Cloudflare loops for many sites due to using less common browsers. Given that the goal is is distinguishing bots from actual humans, it seems to be a rather high failure rate. At least I think I'm human...

One method that does seem to help is being sloppy when clicking the "I am a human" checkbox. I suspected that bots were more likely to perfectly click the center of the checkbox every time and decided to try clicking the padding around the checkbox instead (which still registers as a click). It seems to be more successful, but it could be my imagination.

sourweasel··on D2 Is Non-Profit
The first sentence of the main site is "D2: Declarative Diagramming - A modern language that turns text to diagrams", followed by multiple code snippets and the resulting diagrams.

sourweasel··on Gemini 3.7 Flash
Are you manually rendering previews of its OpenSCAD output to create images for it to review, or do you have a workflow that automates that?
sourweasel··on Government orders GitHub to remove Bluetooth-based chat app Bitchat: Jack Dorsey
Not exactly. There have been cases where tourists were denied entry and faced extended detention but they were held in U.S. facilities before being returned to their home countries.

There have been cases of incoming immigrants sent to foreign prisons without charges or trial. In March 2025 the U.S. administration flew 238 Venezuelan migrants from Texas directly to the "Terrorism Confinement Center" in El Salvador. The group included asylum seekers with active court cases, individuals who had entered the U.S. legally, and recent border crossers. The administration labeled them members of the "Tren de Aragua" gang to justify the move.

sourweasel··on Grok Build is open source
Not to be pedantic, but although the datacenters are running Nvidia hardware, Tesla did develop their own 20-core/3-npu high bandwidth chip for their cars. It's nowhere near the computational ability of any datacenter GPU, but at 150+ TOPS it's no slouch either.
sourweasel··on The largest available Minecraft world, totalling 15 TB
>"The data provided is NOT a single playable Minecraft world, but rather a highly compressed collection of several world downloads of 2b2t."

I feel like HN needs to have a small model that compares post title to the article content and assigns it an accuracy score.

sourweasel··on OpenWrt One – Open Hardware Router
Have you looked at the BPI-R4? It's a pricier option than the OpenWRT One, but it has excellent hw acceleration for networking tasks. I am 90% sure I recall someone reporting using it for a 2.5Gbps PPPoE connection and it handled it. It's also supported by the OpenMPTCProuter project if you need network aggregation support.
sourweasel··on OpenWrt One – Open Hardware Router
FreshTomato is still active, and they are doing x86 builds now. I'm running it on an aging Netgear R7000 and it has been stable.
