splicebot··on Cerebras Deploys Trillion-Parameter AI Models
Cerebras isn't public and are almost certainly going to exit by being acquired. So demos to the public don't matter.
splicebot··on US imposes sanctions on ICC hours after former judge wins Nobel Peace Prize
Peter Thiel recently said that Trump's handlers are not smart but very loyal. Loyal to him, if that wasn't clear.
splicebot··on California closed the Montana license plate loophole
US law enforcement are always armed by default. It would be shocking if they actually showed up unarmed. Possibly negligent and a firing offense.
splicebot··on Why doesn't anyone want to fix one of America's scariest roads?
It's a term everyone agrees on I think. Not everyone agrees on the causes or indeed if it is a problem.
splicebot··on EDG C++ front-end goes public
Not really sad. They are getting older, worked for themselves doing presumably what they wanted their entire career, now they are done. They could have built the company up, instead it has been common knowledge for close to 10 years they were going to retire 'any day now.'
splicebot··on Why doesn't anyone want to fix one of America's scariest roads?
US invests lavishly in road infrastructure by any measure. The idea that the US underinvests is contrarian to say the least. If it doesn't seem like the infra is any good that's in large part because of the huge Anglosphere infra cost multiplier and the fact that there is so much existing to maintain.
splicebot··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
The situation only has to be sustainable for those entities that get a vote that matters. I don't think they've given us any reason to believe they intend on that being a whole lot of people. In fact they've been quite up-front about saying they are concerned about the possibility of that number being zero

I think most people who are working towards greater AI would consider that not an opportunity, but planning to lose in a game that is winner(s) take all.

Winning scenarios in AI don't include being accountable for sustainability and they don't include expertise being valuable. Winners will decide what sustainable means for them.

splicebot··on Rust is tier-1 language at Microsoft
In my time in VC++ and .NET teams, there was only one 1st tier language at MS. It was the one that existed to be whatever Windows wanted - VC++. I've not been there for about 10 years but I haven't heard that anything changed and the blog pretty much confirms that sentiment.

My advice to the Rust team: you're going to get shoved so I hope you're good at shoving back. At least you don't have to worry about stevesi (unless you're with a16z or have kids).

splicebot··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
They've been farming the Cuba thing since the boomers were children. Every election there are bitter Floridian descendants of Cuban exiles to court. It would be insane for them to permanently resolve the issue, and any actual resolution would inevitably be a disappointment to them.
splicebot··on In Australia, a home battery boom has helped cut wholesale power prices
Are we a society though? Margaret Thatcher famously said "There's no such thing as society" and a lot of people have been doing their best to make that true.

There's no use pretending. Utility scale has a single political point of failure. Batteries in home do not.
