steveplace··on Reddit and the Struggle to Detoxify the Internet
Twitter has keyword filtering at the user level and it's magical.
steveplace··on Coinbase Ordered to Turn Over Identities of 14,355 Crypto Traders to the IRS
I'm sure there forex market rules that account for this.

Like buying EUR/USD then going into EUR/AUD

steveplace··on Something is wrong with children's videos on the internet
Yup. Get video apps from actual companies that have at least a semblance of QC.

PBS kids, Disney Jr, Nick Jr.

steveplace··on Ethereum Price Climbs to $360; Crypto Market Cap Pierces $160B
Maybe dollar weighted volume would be a better comparison.
steveplace··on Salesforce fires red team staffers who gave Defcon talk
I thought it was SOP to not bring your phones to DEFCON
steveplace··on Sugar-sweetened drinks with protein rich meal affect metabolism
Weight Change = CI - CO

Where CO has a CI input.

This has been known for while. Protein has a thermic effect which can change your CO.

But the equation still works.

steveplace··on I am an Uber survivor
Reactionary contrarian skepticism is kinda the MO of hacker news comments.
steveplace··on Dow Hits 20000 for First Time
What makes you think "trump" is the stock market?

The graves of investors have been dug with political shovels.

steveplace··on Dow Hits 20000 for First Time
It matters because we make it matter. It's psychological anchoring and it's a very real thing.
steveplace··on When You Are Depressed, Make Something

steveplace··on AngelList acquires Product Hunt
>uncritical adoration

Really? Hacker News comments are uncritical adoration?

I'd weight the cynicism and perma-contrarianism a tad bit higher.

In fact, I believe the success of a startup is inversely proportional to the amount of hate it gets in HN comments.

Theranos excluded from the sample, of course.

steveplace··on Facebook admits it must do more to stop the spread of misinformation
This article would not have been written had the election outcome been different.
steveplace··on Male birth control study cut short as some participants experience side effects
They injected test without an AI to control the side effects.
steveplace··on On Wall Street, a high-ranking few still avoid email
Janet Napolitano never used email as the head of DHS
steveplace··on Zcash begins
The best use cases I think of are definintely not "first world problems."

Places with no banking infrastructure.

Places with bad government.

Places with capital controls.

steveplace··on Color Genomics raises $45M to provide genetic tests that detect cancer risk
Because if people are getting cancer with no genetic markers, then we know it's environment... or at least not genetic.

steveplace··on Almost 80% of Private Day Traders Lose Money
I didn't say 10k was total capital base, just deployment for a trade.

And leverage exists so you can get higher percentage returns on your capital.

I'm just saying it's possible, that's all.

steveplace··on Almost 80% of Private Day Traders Lose Money
>if hedge funds don't want to hire you, why do you think you are still capable to outsmart hedge funds while you can't answer their interview questions for trader role?

You're not playing the same "game" as hedge funds. They have different mandates and liquidity.

Putting 100 million into play on a position is completely different than 10k. You can choose different strategies, different trading vehicles, and different risk management parameters as a retail trader compared to an institutional trader.

So you don't necessarily need insider information or a massive technical infrastructure. You can get an edge, but it won't be the same edge you'd have running serious money.

steveplace··on Patagonia's CEO Explains How to Make On-Site Child Care Pay for Itself
>But if the parents in the office are more productive with their children close by

As someone who works from home with a toddler on the other side of the door, I'll go ahead and challenge that assumption.

steveplace··on Some Silicon Valley Tech Workers Get Home Loans with No Money Down
That's quite an assumption you're making on the interest rate tradeoff. No guarantee of 5% annual on RE, even if you're in an area controlled by bunch of NIMBY's.

The best model for that is to be a bank with the 3/6/3 model.

Borrow at 3%, lend at 6%, on the golf course by 3 PM.

Now doing something similar with stocks.... that's kind of Warren Buffett's model. He uses insurance companies like Berkshire and Aflac to create cash flows to buy stocks.

I guess you could use options to do something similar.

steveplace··on United States Health Care Reform: Progress to Date and Next Steps
In the findings, the author states:

>These and related reforms have contributed to a sustained period of slow growth in per-enrollee health care spending

Has the rate of change in insurance premiums or healthcare spending actually slowed? I don't see it in any of the data presented.

steveplace··on Quiet naval hero who rescued Enigma machine dies aged 95
That narrative worked 50 years ago but not anymore.
steveplace··on A visualisation of all of the money in the world
Buffett trades derivatives.
steveplace··on Martin Shkreli indictment [pdf]
Can you tell me where it says that? I've been looking for details as to when the investigation started but in the document it just lists all the bad things that have happened in the past.
steveplace··on Martin Shkreli indictment [pdf]
I did read the filing but I couldn't find the details as to when they actually started the investigation or when the grand jury was convened.
steveplace··on Martin Shkreli indictment [pdf]
I hope the investigation has been ongoing and didn't start as the result of political pressure.

Edit: No need to hope anymore. Grand jury started in January and investigations ongoing since 2012.

steveplace··on Who's Profiting from $1.2T of Federal Student Loans?
You are lae to the party. APOL Has gone from 90 to 7; ESI from 100 to 3; COCO is bankrupt; SLM never recovered after the 2008 crash.
steveplace··on The Tech Bust of 2015
There is growth investing and there is value investing. One isnt the end-all, and both have merits.

I am more of the growth side of things so i will look at a metric like price to sales or sales growth to get a better idea on what investors are expecting.

My point here I guess is if youre looking at a growth stock, you should be looking at how eps are growing and how they will grow in the future, not the price right now.

Maybe its that i have seen too many scream about p/e on something like NFLX or CRM or AMZN (because they don't back out capex)... And then the stock contiunes to run as earnings grows.

steveplace··on The Tech Bust of 2015
Using p/e to value growth companies doesn't work too well. The "E" in the ratio changes too fast.
