stormcrowsx··on Intel Announces 9th Gen Core CPUs
That is the ugliest CPU box on the market
stormcrowsx··on AMD Contributes 8.5x More Code to the Linux Kernel Than Nvidia
Did they fix it?
stormcrowsx··on Tesla’s response to getting maps updates over LTE or service center WiFi
That should have been the target of his rant not that they won't turn on LTE updates. He comes off sounding like first world problems in the bulk of this article.
stormcrowsx··on Tesla’s response to getting maps updates over LTE or service center WiFi
If it's that big a deal just tether it to the phone.
stormcrowsx··on Ballistic Missile alert in Hawaii
No one. If they wanted to die they'd just wait for the missile.
stormcrowsx··on Scott Kelly's DNA shows unexpected telomere lengthening after year in space
> It seems likely, given that this mechanism is "deliberate" and definitely under the control of your DNA, that you live longer and more successfully with aging than without.

Not necessarily "you" but perhaps the species as a whole. Without the aging and inevitable death our ancestors may have evolved slower.

stormcrowsx··on Amazon refuses to let police access US murder suspect’s Echo recordings
1) Which is why the data shouldn't be accessible without a warrant and there should be stiff punishments if it is accessed without one. We shouldn't stop all the other advances that come from the technology of these sensors and the help they could provide in solving very real crimes.

2) There's already plenty of avenues for circumstantial evidence already, this is the reason we have lawyers and judges to argue over and prevent evidence that isn't solid

stormcrowsx··on Amazon refuses to let police access US murder suspect’s Echo recordings
So we shouldn't collect data that might help solve a major crime because someone might commit a minor crime like stalking?

We're trading the potential to solve a major crime for the potential for a minor crime of stalking to happen. As long as we require that a warrant be involved in getting the data and there are punishments in place for accessing without a warrant I'd feel safe with them collecting it.

stormcrowsx··on Tesla footage of braking before crash ahead [video]
I'd hope a poorly maintained automated truck which crashes would result in extremely heavy fines and lawsuits, to the point where it could seriously threaten to put a trucking company out of business. Make it uneconomical not to maintain the trucks.
stormcrowsx··on Martin Shkreli Says ‘Of Course’ He’d Raise Drug Price Again
This is not a typical case of Supply and Demand. This is a case of someone having complete control of supply on a necessity for some people and charging whatever they want because insurance and social programs will foot the bill. In some cases the drug companies can very cheaply produce the drugs.

This isn't a problem in a competitive market they would never get away with this sort of stuff but our laws and our healthcare system have created a perfect environment for exploiting.

Can't blame people like Martin for doing it but we can blame politicians for not doing something about it.

stormcrowsx··on How I Detect Fake News
Changing education is the best solution but its not a quick solution, people like quick solutions.
stormcrowsx··on Facebook Bans Fake News Sites from Using Its Advertising Network
Hacker News is also a left leaning bubble so asking this question here will probably mostly just yield liberal viewpoints on the topic.
stormcrowsx··on My experience rewriting Enjarify in Rust
Really not a property of Go. Any codebase can be hard to follow if the designer wants it to be. It just happened that the Perl community went off the deep end and decided that tiny unreadable code was better than big readable code.
stormcrowsx··on Tesla Model S stolen, as thieves block location tracking
A password is incredibly weak security. For someone who is safe it may be strong but for the average person a little social engineering can acquire it without their knowledge.

Most modern cars cannot be stolen with a screwdriver and a pair of wireclippers in a reasonable time frame. A password entry on the other hand would be seconds and any bystander who did see it would not notice anything out of the ordinary.

stormcrowsx··on Tesla Model S battery bursts into flames, car “totally destroyed” in 5 minutes
Fireproof barriers are mostly just meant to give the driver time to exit. When there's a lot of fuel burning there's not much one can do except try and redirect the fire away from harming the people inside it. Eventually they give or the fire bypasses it by heating up other parts of the car and causing those to combust.
stormcrowsx··on The A-10 Warthog May Be Kept Out of Retirement by Law
Isn't the purpose to reduce the maintenance cost? I would think one type of aircraft is easier to maintain than 2 different specialized aircraft.
stormcrowsx··on The Dyson Supersonic hair dryer [video]
I could care less about the product but I thought the presentation on this page was excellent.
stormcrowsx··on Broadcom Sues SpaceX for Allegedly Poaching Employees
I bet if Broadcom had offered the right amount of money or benefits their employees wouldn't have left them.
stormcrowsx··on Pencil: A Microframework Inspired by Flask for Rust
I'm a huge fan of flask but I actually prefer the approach of not using decorators. Without decorators its easy to see all the paths in one area and they get type-checked in rust.
stormcrowsx··on The Trollable Self-Driving Car
I'd imagine if this became a critical piece of our infrastructure the FCC or some other government organization would step in and make products that interfered with them very difficult to obtain.

Not to mention I could have a rifle by the end of the day in my state.

stormcrowsx··on 3d-Printed Revolver Can Fire 8 Rounds
You must not have seen Matthias Wandell make a vacuum cleaner using wood. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBxFNUWD2GQ.

Motors are everywhere if you look for them. I pulled one recently out of a garbage disposal that stopped working but the motor was still fine (some seals gave out and slicer was damaged as well).

stormcrowsx··on The arms race for anti-drone weaponry
I would think jamming signals on anything flying is a bit on the dangerous side. Yeah some commercial drones will gently land but there's no guarantee. I'd also think it would not take the criminals they are trying to stop long to realize it and find ways around it. Such as preprogramming flight paths in and allowing them to fly without any need to have radio communication.
stormcrowsx··on Smart guns finally poised to change U.S. gun market?
You need to keep them simple unless you're improving their ability to kill, in which case this is the latest in super complex death machines http://tracking-point.com/precision-guided-firearms/precisio.... Takes care of all your "herd management" and "homestead defense" needs.
stormcrowsx··on Russian Ships Near Data Cables Are Too Close for U.S. Comfort
My company is running full steam into a situation where a loss of internet means our product is down and the devs are sitting in their chairs spinning because we can't access code, build servers, and binary build artifacts.
stormcrowsx··on The UK is replacing roundabouts with traffic lights; US is doing the opposite
I could see roundabouts being an advantage on smaller one or two lane streets but beyond that it seems like it would get dangerous fast.
stormcrowsx··on Unsealed Transcript Shows How a Judge Justified Ross Ulbricht's Life Sentence
It's terrible that we are doing this to someone who probably would have learned their lesson with only 5-10 years of prison and been able to return to society. He had the potential to return as a productive member of society and now instead he will be a lifelong debt all for assisting in the sale of drugs that people willingly purchased knowing the risk of death from those drugs. He's no saint but this punishment is unreasonable and it seems like the Judge was just out to get him.
stormcrowsx··on U.S. Air Force Requires Airmen to Praise F-35
The F-15 is one of the most successful air superiority fighters in modern war history. It is not a dog fighter, its a huge aircraft with a lot of power and a high service ceiling. It got to be such a good air superiority fighter due to its ability detect and fire missiles at aircraft before they could. So I don't think the F-35 needs to dogfight, it just needs to be less detectable and a better detection system than its adversary.

I agree with the drones though, making cheaper drones and having a large quantity of them seems like a better strategy. A single plane can only carry so many missiles.

stormcrowsx··on Go Fucking Do It
It took me a while to realize this site wasn't one of the one's generated at http://tiffzhang.com/startup/?s=286425804879
stormcrowsx··on 14-Year-Old Boy Arrested for Bringing Homemade Clock to School
The ignorant portion of our society thinks bombs have flashing lights and tick thanks to Hollywood. In reality anyone wanting to do harm is not going to make their bomb noticeable.

It reminds me of the Aqua Teen bomb scare back in 2007 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_Boston_bomb_scare

stormcrowsx··on Truffle Debugging Demo: Debugging multi-language applications [video]
I was even more impressed when I googled Truffle and Graal as I had not heard of them until this.
