strickman··on How I got my laser eye injury
Didn't anyone ever tell you to make sure your optics are clean?

strickman··on NetBSD 10.0 Released
Congrats on the eighteens major release.
strickman··on John C. Dvorak on Intel's First Neural Network Chip in 1990
At 12-14 years old, I remember jumping straight to the "Inside Track" section of PC Mag first. One of the best in his prime, and a Patriot.
strickman··on It begins: Ethiopia set to become first country to ban internal combustion cars
Unfortunately, the lack the industriousness of the Chinese people is certain to hinder the velocity of innovation we'd see with a purely Ethiopian effort. People don't eschew the "Made in China" label without reason. With hand tools for example, I started with Chinese made Harbor Freight in my 20's, German in my 30's, now it's either Ethiopian tools or "I'm not doing this project".
strickman··on It begins: Ethiopia set to become first country to ban internal combustion cars
Try to manage a single day having given up all the elements of advanced civilization yielded by an Ethiopian mind. We'll see if you make it to lunch.

That was merciful. You went easy on that guy, mentioning only items of cultural and religious significance. Next time hit him with the big guns - Ethiopian contributions to theoretical physics, chemistry, architecture, engineering, philosophy, industry, computer science, and pure mathematics.
strickman··on It begins: Ethiopia set to become first country to ban internal combustion cars
This is going to sideline dozens of automobiles. What effect will this have on Ethiopia's industrial production capacity, upon which the rest of the world depends?
strickman··on Throughout the rich world, the young are falling out of love with cars
Can we accelerate this so that I can finally get a call back from any Porsche dealer to tell me I have a Carrera S allocation?
strickman··on Tell HN: DigitalOcean is doing layoffs
Well of course you don't do long-dated. You open a Vanguard account and put your cash in something like VMFXX; average maturity is 11 days. 4.5%
strickman··on We come to bury ChatGPT, not to praise it
I read the book when it was published and haven't kept up with his doings since; but I'm curious now and will look it up. Watching his talks made me think he's an autist to a mild degree, and social taboos seem to wield less behavioral authority over those types; e.g. - Eric S. Raymond

I bet Bostrom's royalty checks have seen a handsome rebound lately.

strickman··on We come to bury ChatGPT, not to praise it
"pseudo-authoritative"

Psychometrics is the crown jewel of the field of psychology. There is no controversy among the psychometrists themselves that the body of academic work is numerate, correct, and repeatable. The author has chosen moral crusade over the quest for truth.

A good place to start learning about the field - https://www1.udel.edu/educ/gottfredson/reprints/index.html

As far as exploring the dangers of AI and how to avoid them, I recommend Nick Bostrom's "Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies"

strickman··on How does a nail puncture a tire? (2003)
Related topic - always pay the extra 10% for the tire insurance at Discount Tire; I can't believe they aren't losing money on this.
strickman··on I'm an 18 year old developer. How do I become one of the best programmers ever?
Becoming one of the best ever is only possible if your IQ is one of the best ever. There is going to be some biological upper limit. Minds like Torvalds, Richie, Thompson are rare; and there is nothing you can do to reach that level if your own source code isn't on the same level. However, there is a lot of great advice here in the comments that can take you to your full potential, whatever that may be. That's important too, because it's sure easy to keep yourself well below that level.

Go to YouTube and search for "Big Think Larry Wall" and "Big Think Bjarne Stroustrup" and listen to a couple of the greats.

strickman··on Goat Rental – Hire Goats
I think he has a point there. If he did not pay for, it may be an even trade.

You'd just have to compare the cost per acre per month of machine maintenance vs the cost to maintain a well fed flock for a month; including land costs and property taxes if you own the land.

strickman··on Goat Rental – Hire Goats
Just finished watching Clarkson's Farm; Jeremy got some sheep for this purpose. Recommend watching.
strickman··on A Note to the Celsius Community
It's lose man, lose. Not loose.
strickman··on Tell HN: I'm Afraid We're Shutting Down
statement 1 - "These are some of the most sincere, honest, and heroic people I’ve ever met."

statement 2 - "And if they did accept a job, they’d often leave after only a few days."

strickman··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
1 - don't smoke pot (if you are doing so) and don't drink alcohol every day 2 - listen to Jordan Peterson lectures on youtube and read 12 Rules For Life 3 - be honest about your own IQ and choose your path accordingly - education and hours can only take you to the limit of your innate intelligence; minds the likes of Linus Torvalds, Don Knuth, Ken Thompson, Larry Wall are extremely rare 4 - run a mile a day and do weight training 5 days a week - watch Pumping Iron to get in the mood 5 - cut down on the hours - look him in the eye and with confidence tell the owner of your company - "Listen, I can solve your problems, but I cannot do it by myself anymore. Here's what I'm going to need from you to guide you down the path to success...<junior dev>, etc."
strickman··on Sex Differences in Friendship Preferences
It wasn't my intention to limit my comments on this to statements for which I have links to supporting academic studies. I wanted to propose my guesses, because it's fun to see who else has arrived at the same spot. I was careful to start with "I think it's" rather than "it is true that" or "consensus exists that".
strickman··on Sex Differences in Friendship Preferences
I think one piece of evidence would be the studies in psychology on the "big five" personality characteristics that show women scoring higher than men on agreeableness. But this is more of my guess on how things work.

And it's probably not a massive offset in the bell curves; your examples would not be in conflict.

strickman··on Sex Differences in Friendship Preferences
I think it's more biological than cultural. Men evolved with preference for solving the production problem (are we creating enough?), and women evolved with preference for solving the distribution problem (does everyone have enough?). But as with everything, the behaviors are described by a normal distribution, and these two curves with offset means overlap.

strickman··on Stray bullet kills English astrophysicist visiting United States
I left Atlanta for the Gulf Coast a few months ago. Guns are irrelevant, it's the quality of people that matters. From now on I'll adhere strictly to the creed, "live among people that think like you do" and I will only maintain residence in a conservative geography.
strickman··on Ask HN: Recommendations for an SMTP Sending Service?
I recommend mailjet. I can send email from my openbsd terminal that passes SPF and DKIM.
strickman··on Amazon is about to host a homeless shelter in its Seattle headquarters
Not a good move. If you reward a particular behavior, you will get more of it.
