subcosmos··on Show HN: Quarantine-At-Home – a distributed project for finding Covid drugs
Taking huge inspiration from Folding@Home, and my teenaged fascination with SETI@Home, I threw together a prototype framework to distribute small-molecule "Docking" experiments to tackle the coronavirus epidemic.

Source code is here : https://github.com/cjmielke/quarantineAtHome

We currently have about 50 volunteers pitching in both CPU and GPU compute time, and we have already performed >100,000 docking experiments against two of the coronavirus proteins. You can see which proteins we are targetting here : https://github.com/cjmielke/quarantine-files/tree/master/rec...

Want to join the community? Windows and Mac builds are available, but you power users can jump right in with a docker image :

CPU : sudo docker run -it -e ME=<YourUserName> cjmielke/quarantine_at_home:quarantine

GPU : sudo nvidia-docker run -it -e ME=<YourUserName> cjmielke/quarantine_at_home:quarantinegpu

subcosmos··on Health system sues thousands of patients, seizes pay and puts liens on homes
Nothing arrestworthy, but definitely shameful behavior of a high-ranking hospital official allegedly defrauding a large multinational company and attempting to shift blame to low-level employees that had zero involvement.

MDs no less! Forget the Hippocratic Oath!

Perhaps white-coat fraud is the equivalent of white-collar-crime in the public health world. Nothing matters more than the bottom line. Not even human lives.

subcosmos··on Health system sues thousands of patients, seizes pay and puts liens on homes
I currently work at one of the largest hospitals in the country. Can confirm! The corruption in the healthcare sector is disgusting and hard to fight. I blew the whistle and got retaliated against, in complete violation of CA law. Tempted to go to the press.

Watch this to understand the problem better : https://www.unrest.film/

And this : https://www.ted.com/talks/jen_brea_what_happens_when_you_hav...

I study neurology and metabolism. If any of these patients are delusional, its an exceedingly small fraction of them. Same goes for people diagnosed with "conversion disorder", which is the idea that they are exhausted because they are dealing with some buried repressed childhood trauma.

Some psychiatrists can have a real discussion with you about the intricacies of the hypothalamus. Others ..... really not..... they will try and deal with your systemic inflammatory problems with Fruedian psychoanalysis. Worse yet is that many patients dealing with these deep fatigue and metabolism issues have been institutionalized because people think they are just faking it.

I can understand why so many chronic fatigue patients are reacting this way. My doctor once told me that during his medical training, he was taught that people claiming to be suffering from this are bonkers and must be treated as if they are psychotic.

Nowadays, the evidence is stacking up that there are metabolic, viral, and neurological factors involved, and while all of these can effect alertness, they are not ever dealt with via willpower.

The patients who have been royally insulted are the ones likely reacting this way. Whether or not the physician or scientist on the receiving end is deserving of the ridicule is case specific.

subcosmos··on Tapering of SSRI treatment to mitigate withdrawal symptoms
I'll add to this by saying that going on zoloft a year ago has been like the best nootropic experience of my life. In many ways, the first 6 months were like a persistent 24/7 microdose on MDMA ..... it was incredible. I also turned my life around and accomplished some of my life's most impressive work, all while not trying to kill myself anymore!

Beyond solving a massive sudden depression, it was actually quite enhancing. I felt like I was in the movie limitless. Given the pathways SSRIs target in the brain, I'd say they have similar benefits to all of that SV legacy around psychedelic use....

Sadly, things normalized and the burst of awesome tapered off. Now the medication is the new normal, and skipping doses brings the depression back, just not nearly as bad as it was. Hopefully some day we will learn how to tweak it so the immensely positive experiences last forever.

These days, I no longer think of antidepressants as any kind of crutch. If anything, it is another tool in the transhumanists toolbox allowing the human body to perform better than nature has provided.

subcosmos··on Tapering of SSRI treatment to mitigate withdrawal symptoms
The currently best-accepted theories to why antidepressants work involve slow but measurable changes in grey matter densities in key parts of the brain. We haven't had this kind of high-resolution MRI technology for very long.
