I agree. KDE is by far the best desktop environment for Linux laptops with touchscreens.

sublinear··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
Salary rates are yearly, bonuses are percentages of that salary, and shares are in quantity. Payment schedule is biweekly or monthly. Paid time off has no specific limit, but subject to approval by management (usually just don't take more than two weeks at a time and plan ahead according to workload). Sick/parental leave depends on federal and local laws. Federal holidays are mandatory.

This compensation package is reviewed yearly, and your role is simply a job title. I'm approaching middle age and have worked my entire adult life. Nowhere have I ever seen any hours specified. The closest to that is when I've had to help HR fill in the billable hours on timesheets for specific projects with certain clients. That's usually just approving whatever blanks Jira filled in for ServiceNow.

I'm, of course, not talking about working at a startup.

> What is the problem if it is AI written? Properly guided AI writes better than most human expositors.

I don't understand why HN cannot ever say the first sentence without the second one.

Most people agree that using AI for research or finding better words is fine, but then can't upvote or have a meaningful conversation because of the performative politics and wild delusions about a scifi future.

Dude, all we have with LLMs is an NLP search engine. Get over it. It's been around half a decade of this nonsense. There is no "step change". There is no "hockey stick" curve. The models have not "dramatically improved compared to last year" regardless of what year it currently is. There is no big bad overlord coming for you. Nobody is getting replaced by AI. Even frontier AI can't replace local AI. It's just the logical next step towards better search that assumes you want the "I'm feeling lucky" button a little too often.

sublinear··on 'Forced out': HOA fees to rise to $2,500 a month
Leave the city and don't buy into an HOA.

It's not that hard in the USA. If you don't like driving or have some pseudomoral dilemma over that, I don't know what to tell you. It's hardly a downside.

sublinear··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
Yep! Copilot is proving to be a much better product strategy than anything OpenAI or Anthropic could do. Microsoft still dominates the enterprise market.

Similarly, Google is improving Gemini and still dominates pretty much everywhere else from the phone to the car and on the web.

They don't have to have the best LLMs to finally deliver on the value they promised over a decade ago. Applications are always a much better moat, and it's not like anyone was going anywhere else anyway. I'm fully expecting Microsoft, Google, Apple, and Amazon to reap soon and buy up datacenters for pennies on the dollar. Market won't crash because China was smart enough to pause and maintain the hardware shortage.

> This can mean nothing who uses AI for programming

It doesn't matter because AI programming never got much buy-in outside of leaner teams working at startups. Startups will continue to migrate towards running their own local models. The corporate world does have some limited use for greenfield and misc tech debt, but will always be slowed down by the need for much larger scale human collaboration. The LLMs don't move the needle at all on productivity when the changes remain small (the parts people agreed on after all the teeth pulling) and the sprints and deadlines are still long.

sublinear··on ChatGPT Keeps Telling People 404 Media Can Solve Their Tech Support Problems
I think this is a lot more likely than people realize, but some won't like the execution on this.

It's either a vague blanket "ban on AI" that wraps up all dev work in red tape, or it's shutting down specific businesses like OpenAI and Anthropic while letting Google and Microsoft continue to dominate.

I think you have a very narrow and specific experience with people claiming to be "devs".

I don't know of any devs in real life who would loudly and publicly get excited about anything unless it was their own completed project to show off.

The tools are a footnote. It's precisely because it's so hard to get a project that far along that they would be familiar with many more tools than they would ever speak about. I suppose some people have a low bar. I wouldn't really call them "devs", especially now in this "AI era".

sublinear··on Xbox Turns Down Netflix $500M Offer
> In a statement to Puck, Xbox said, “We have received record-breaking interest in our I.P.; Netflix is a valued partner and we are excited for the forthcoming release of our Minecraft and Diablo animated series together, among other adaptations.”

My eyes are about to roll out of my head. Stale intellectual property can make unexpectedly good money for a little while, but this ain't exactly Mickey Mouse. Even Mickey Mouse is out of steam by now.

Microsoft is rejecting the deal simply because they can afford the loss even if they let everything under "Xbox" rot. They will only accept someone willing to overpay.

sublinear··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
> you can use a language more towards the YOLO end of the spectrum - more Go or Python or JavaScript than assembly or Rust

You might want to change the way you phrase this idea. I think you meant that Go/Python/JS are more "YOLO-friendly languages" (you'll get into far less trouble if you write slop in them). My initial reading was the opposite. It sounded like you were saying the languages themselves are the slapped together garbage.

Assembly is most certainly not "YOLO-friendly", but is more YOLO.

sublinear··on The Real Kevin Bacon
No, it's not that you're old. It's that the movie industry took a big shit in the late 2000s.

Even the takeaways from the last few slides strongly support this. The Gen Z actors are nowhere near as prolific nor have starred in as memorable roles. Previous generations had their actors passing the baton to the next one by co-starring. None of this happened for Gen Z which is why you don't know their names. To me, that's the biggest sign of all that Hollywood didn't even try to make a future for these actors. This is a calculated decline.

The final conclusion even had to jam in a progressive factoid for good measure about it being a woman. It's planting the seed for another round of 2010s-style manufactured outrage in the 2030s when nobody cares except the most righteous "true fans". It's not even misogyny. That's just the cover story. It's the greedy race to the bottom.

sublinear··on Median product "lifespan" has fallen from ~4y down to ~1.5y
I don't know. I still think you're looking at this from the consumer side exactly the way they want you to.

In business, some of the most reliable returns come from predicting when the wheels fall off and riding that sucker until the bitter end. The "hits" don't matter anymore to that kind of business. The area under that tail part of the curve can be much larger than the area under the earlier peaks when consumers were most enthusiastic.

sublinear··on Median product "lifespan" has fallen from ~4y down to ~1.5y
> a hit and fad driven industry similar to movies, music and video games

That doesn't track at all.

When the movie and music industries were pumping out their biggest hits, the production cost was high. Profit may be higher now in the modern era while costs are lower, but would you honestly (seriously honestly please) call most of the remake/homage slop we've had since the late 2000s "hits"? This simply isn't survivorship bias either. Just look at what music stands the test of time on youtube and spotify or gets people at least smiling in real life. Look at the variety of genres too. Look at when we had the highest density of solid audience ratings for even run-of-the-mill or cult movies.

You can say all you want that these industries "always did this" and insist that when you look at your own list of favorites it's just because you're getting old, but that's more obviously denial as the years of this bullshit have racked up. Even the artists agree even when they're finding success at this game, and they have the same resentment. Younger people don't even care about movies and music anymore while older people desperately pay and hope for new stuff like it's another pull of the increasingly rigged slot machine. It's not even that younger people are more interested in social media. That excuse is just as clearly false when you see how hard they go on retro styles and what they also have saved on playlists.

sublinear··on Hedra is a 3D open world game I wrote from scratch while in highschool
Yes NLP has come a long way and LLMs allow easier "searching" of the solution.

The one shot results vary in quality because in order for the result to align with something good, you're playing a guessing game which description(s) match the desired output. Needing to know what's on both sides of the curtain is in some ways potentially double the effort of not bothering with an LLM in the first place.

It's also for this reason I'm skeptical of the more "specialized" models. They're basically inflatable bumpers on the bowling lanes mapping to limited outputs that might not even be as good as the training source. Might as well just give me the github link at that point and we're right back to copypasta in the 2010s.

sublinear··on Hedra is a 3D open world game I wrote from scratch while in highschool
I hope I don't sound rude for saying this, but "relic of another era" isn't how I'd describe the time before LLMs.

We're very much still in the same era as back then. I hope every dev realizes by now that there's no meaningful difference between a git clone back then and using LLMs now.

Projects like yours contributed to the source "training data". It's only plagiarism when people didn't publish their source with this intent.

Yes, and this era of comedy is thankfully over. Carlin became quite preachy in his later years. He has way better material.
sublinear··on Most advice is right for the person giving it
This one has a super simple answer. They eat too many carbs.

When carbs spike their blood sugar, insulin swoops in to convert the excess glucose into fat. When they try to restrict calories, they focus on cutting the wrong macros. Calories from carbs are hard to avoid and easily miscounted/underestimated unless you're literally weighing the food and know every ingredient used.

You're not even wrong that women are more likely to have a sweet tooth and fall for crap diets like "low fat" or "plant based". It's decades of evil marketing at play here. The result is not only that they stay fat, but then lose muscle and the number on the scale doesn't budge.

You know what's a whole lot easier to eyeball and get full on? Meat and veg you cooked yourself. That's the easiest solution by miles, but people will continue serving themselves way too much pasta and bread (because it looks right on the plate), adding sauces that are smuggling even more carbs, eating ultraprocessed junk loaded with sugar you can't even taste or filler carbs to cut production cost, and saying their occasional piece of "fun size" candy or favorite drink "doesn't count".

sublinear··on Most advice is right for the person giving it
In the first place, the focus on weight loss is missing the point. Weight loss is just a side effect of metabolic change, and ideally you want to lose the fat instead of muscle.

Any means of positive metabolic change is fine, but some are better than others. Ozempic is definitely on the lower tiers of success because the body recomp and more meaningful habits never happen.

sublinear··on Why do we have so many meetings?
Anyone who would advocate for this strategy against any SME is a moron anyway.

It's like watching someone who's expecting a knife fight walk in with a concealed handgun only to be immediately confronted with a tank.

The email is usually an attempt to not waste time in the meeting and get shit done. Leadership always favors those who can make it so. Anyone who stalls for time or hides information will always look bad. I don't get why people so desperately try anyway.

Most of these strange gambits in office politics are a losing game for the inept and inexperienced. One can only wonder why we keep pretending like there even is such a "game" of office politics.
