sukhavati··on Ideas aren't getting harder to find (2022)
I think the issue with slowing discovery comes partially if not largely due to the decay in aristocratic pursuits of disinterested knowledge, plus the decay in human capital over the last 150-200 years
sukhavati··on Show HN: Continue? Y/N: A 60-second game about AI agent permission fatigue
Reminds me of the "Papers, please" game. Glory to Arstotzka!
sukhavati··on 650GB of Data (Delta Lake on S3). Polars vs. DuckDB vs. Daft vs. Spark
for me the issue is that DuckLake's feature of flushing inlined data to parquet is still in alpha. one of the main issues with parquet is when writing small batches you end up with a lot of parquet files that are inefficient to work with using duckdb. to solve this ducklake inlines these small writes to the dbms you choose (postgres) but for a while it couldn't write them back to parquet. last I had checked this feature didn't yet exist, and now it seems to be in alpha which is nice to see, but I'd like some better support before I consider switching some personal data projects over. https://ducklake.select/docs/stable/duckdb/advanced_features...
sukhavati··on Wealth tax would be deadly for French economy, says Europe's richest man
this isn't even remotely supported by the data out there https://www.brookings.edu/articles/has-pay-kept-up-with-infl...
sukhavati··on What Hugging Face reveals about the data economy of fine-tuning
I wasn’t aware the provenance of fine tunes was available, it’s really interesting actually
sukhavati··on Mirrorshades: The Cyberpunk Anthology (1986)
I got the UK version with foil cover to make the “mirrorshades” shiny and I love it so much. One of the definitive anthologies of the genre
sukhavati··on Big agriculture mislead the public about the benefits of biofuels
I always thought that trading precious topsoil for motive power when oil does just fine was an insane premise. Too bad not enough people recognize this for what it is. Biomass is another issue that I find grossly inappropriate.
sukhavati··on Airport for DuckDB
same here man, ended up going with trino explicitly for writing and data management and using chdb/duckdb to process data for front-ends etc (mostly ethereum data so chdb "support" for ui256 is quite important)
sukhavati··on A startup doesn't need to be a unicorn
if an investor already has X% amount of their portfolio invested in gold, they might seek to diversify by investing in uncorrelated ventured such as startups. an investments idiosyncratic risk/reward is only meaningful in relation to other investments in the universe of choices the investor can make.
sukhavati··on Microsoft's Majorana 1 chip carves new path for quantum computing
through geometry and configuration of materials, you can create quantum effects on a macroscopic scale
sukhavati··on Trump wins presidency for second time
I've seen Harris pronounce her name a variety of different ways... One of the more compelling reasons behind throwing accusations of wrongspeak when folks pronounce her name one way or another is that "kuh-mul-ah" sounds like "burn her" and rhymes with "suck on it" in Spanish, which might have triggered this to begin with.
sukhavati··on Eating less can lead to a longer life: study in mice shows why
Caloric restriction (CR) leading to longer lifespan doesn’t generalize, including rhesus monkeys [1]. Moreover, across various species there seems to be negative correlation between average lifespan and effectiveness of CR and lifespan extension [2]. sukhavati··on SWPC issues first G4 geomagnetic storm watch since 2005
The March G4 was unexpected. I wouldn't be surprised if this one turns out to be much stronger than is modeled today as well.
sukhavati··on SWPC issues first G4 geomagnetic storm watch since 2005
the solar spot is comparable in size but the CME were significantly (100x) less energetic than is estimated for Carrington. With that said, the Earth's magnetic field has weakened by ~15% since the 1800s so there's that...
sukhavati··on SWPC issues first G4 geomagnetic storm watch since 2005
I was trying to find stuff around Oct 2003 when the last event of this magnitude took place, but I wasn't able to find anything comparable. From what I can tell the forecast is more mild on the 12th UTC, so I wouldn't worry that much about that. I was worried in my case because my flight leaves pretty much at the apex of the geomagnetic storm.

I think we can expect delays, GPS being unresponsive, radio issues, and some control tower congestion & issues. Can't really comment with any more detail.

sukhavati··on SWPC issues first G4 geomagnetic storm watch since 2005
all of them are UTC I believe, Prof. Mat answer to a question about the tz on the post replies
sukhavati··on SWPC issues first G4 geomagnetic storm watch since 2005
I'm quite worried as I'm on a transatlantic flight during this event, and there have been 6 solar eruptions with at least 4 CMEs (NOAA not up to date with the enlil spiral just yet). Here are a couple useful links I'm using to keep track of this event: NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center dashboards [1], FlightAware Flight Delays and Cancellations [2] and NOAA Global Positioning System Community Dashboard [3], Prof. Mathew Owens post [4]

sukhavati··on Conditions on Earth may be moving outside the safe operating space for humanity
based on scientific research, much like communism and scientific management and phrenology and racism. meanwhile climate models are not capable of predicting the past given current conditions, produce wildly incompatible results, and operate on a model of the earth that is pathetically simplistic, ignoring cloud coverage (which has 3-20x the magnitude of effects of carbon) solar variability and wind patterns. the world might end as we know it for it is clear that crucial features of the earth are changing at a rapid pace, especially oceanic currents, but it will happen in a way that completely surprised most people, if not climate scientists that are aware of the limits of their models.
sukhavati··on There are now two types of PayPal dollars, and one is better than the other
care to elaborate how is Tether a scam? is it because they earn the yield difference on user reserves while giving nothing to users? if that's so, probably due to how US law views securities. other than that, it appears as though users get exactly what they want from tether, which is: dollars
sukhavati··on Taking dietary supplements full of antioxidants could help cancerous tumors grow
lol I bet that works, you can also rub garlic directly on warts and other skin issues I’ve been helped by that in the last. On a separate note, 6,000 IU of d3 is nowhere near a megadose lmao, the study that supposed that it’s dangerous was wrong due to a typo, doses of 50,000 IU over 6mo have been tested and found to be safe. I personally take around 10-15k daily depending on sun exposure and once a week take 30k IUs, along with other things. I would recommend experimenting with 10k daily dose at least if you’re willing to check it out :)
sukhavati··on Solar storm expected to make Northern Lights visible in 17 states
I haven’t kept track of the strength of the last coronal mass ejection, but I know you are wrong in this regard, because coronal mass ejections take around 3 to 4 days, sometimes even longer to reach earth. Other effects from solar flaring, such as x-ray particles, and high charge electrons arrive, basically, instantaneously along with light (~8m)
