The popular domains metric is probably measured through the 1.1.1.1 dns service and firefox recently defaulted to resolving domains through cloudflares DoH service, so popular domains may be biased toward firefox users. Browser popularity is probably less biased as it would have to be measure by HTTP requests to sites using cloudflare.

I'm guessing the different metrics are collected through different means. Their blog mentions HTTP request to sites that use cloudflare as well as DNS [0]. It would make sense that domain popularity is meaused through DNS and bots and DOS measured by the systems built for handling those things.

We've had solid-state thermoelectric generators for a while that convert heat flux directly to electricity, they're just really inefficient (only 5-8% efficent). [0] I can't find anything suggesting a fundamental limit to the efficiency, but it would take a lot to catch up to steam-powered generators at 33%-48% efficiency [1].

I don't own one, I looked into it the last time I purchased a TV and just couldn't justify the price over the sale price of a regular "smart" TV. The more feature rich digital signage (from Samsung at least) with HDR10+, HDMI CEC, etc. is much more expensive than a consumer TV, i think 3-4x. It didn't fit my valuation so I just have a normal Samsung TV with no networking configured.

There are Samsung ones that are 4-5x more expensive with more features (HDR 10+, HDMI CEC, etc.) so its definitely important to make sure they have all the features you want. As with anything it may or may not fit your use-case

No experience running them, but looking at samsung digital signage, HDR looks to be a feature of their high end models and extremely expensive. ~$4,500 for a 55" 4K TV [0]. The more competitively priced displays[1] (~$1300 for 70" 4K) don't seem to offer it.

Lots of companies have "digital signage" TVs built for business that don't have the consumer software. They are typically more expensive and optimized more for continuous usage (16hr/day 7days/week for samsung), but as of now I don't believe they get ads pushed to them.

I would call my use of bangs getting to a specific page on another site rather that searching another site. For instance, I get a lot of use out of the wolfram alpha bang, !wa, in those uses I'm not searching as much as I'm inputting a calculation for wolfram alpha to perform and the bang let's me skip a step by typing "!wa {quety/calculation}" into my address bar. Similarly, if ddg is your default search engine, you can lookup a url on archive.is just by prepending it with "!archiveis " in the address bar.

It almost sounds like you're described freedom of speech as a right to be heard. That's a distinction of positive/negative freedoms as mentioned previously in this thread. You can host a blog and your speech won't be restricted (negative freedom), but if no one is viewing it, that's because no one cares to hear what you have to say. You don't have the right to be heard (positive freedom) because that would require people being forced to hear you.

If the problem is that you can't build an audience it's not because your freedom of speech is being restricted, it's because no one wants to listen to you.

I suspect the answer is not a technical one, but a business one. I'm guessing that adding local-only usage features just aren't profitable enough (not enough increase in market share by implementing them) for Ring to justify the effort.

Genuinely curious, how would you give users "the freedom to stop all data collection by these devices" without some kind of walled garden. Is the solution something like flatpack for all apps? but then how do you make sure all apps don't just refuse to work without permission to collect data or manage to collect information without users knowing? You can't force developers to be honest about what their app does without having a means to prevent it from being installed. Specifically for apps, I can't think of a solution that has no restrictions of software installations, but wouldn't be trivially turned into an incredibly user hostile environment.

I believe internet is needed because tesla acts as a CA for your phone. That allows you to revoke a device, for instance if it were stolen. My guess is that the phone has authorizations that it renews fairly frequently and in this case apps could renew auths so once the current set expired you couldn't use the phone to unlock, etc. I can't immediately think of a better solution to the problem that allows using a phone for some functions and being able to remotely revoke a device.

The temperature and pressure near the center of gas giants is crazy high. For Jupiter [0]:

It's similar to why you wouldn't be surprised to find diamonds deep underground in a mine, but if you found tiny diamonds forming in clouds that would be a major revelation.
