tdeck··on CNC Stone Carving
I remember hearing on some podcast years ago that thanks to HGTV everyone started painting their houses white or beige, because they saw on reality TV shows that that made the house easier to sell. What you're describing sounds like a scaled up version of that.
tdeck··on New York Times adds more AI features to its Cooking app. Users aren't thrilled
> Say you’re cooking braised white beans and greens with parmesan, NYT Cooking app in hand. But you notice that you’re out of chard and only have spinach. Cooking veterans know that chard is a rough-and-tumble green that has some backbone, while spinach is a comparative wimp that will wilt the moment you look at it funny. If you need to sub in spinach for chard, how would the recipe change? Would you, for instance, add the spinach later than you would the chard to account for its pathetic stamina? That’s the sort of thing the new AI feature could account for.

Frankly I can see how this would be useful to some people. At least it would help prevent the ridiculous "I didn't have eggs so I added applesauce, the cake came out all flat IDK what's wrong" type of substitutions.

tdeck··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
There are also of people with deep technical knowledge that has a lot of value but doesn't necessarily find a lucrative market outside Microsoft (e.g. Windows internals).
tdeck··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
I wouldn't say it's zero skill but I'm always surprised by people who act like it's a big differentiator that requires significant "training". Uncharitably it feels like vibe-coders want to count their "skills" as equivalent to actual software engineering rather than something you can pick up in 2-3 weeks of effort.
tdeck··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
One thing I've noticed about Microsoft is that the engineers seem much less mobile than people at SV companies might be used to. Part of it is that there just aren't as many good options in the Seattle area where many MSFT employees are based (by far the standout alternative alternative is Amazon and they don't exactly have the best reputation for workplace culture).

Also Microsoft has already been trashing morale with year after year of layoffs. They probably assume this won't move the needle.

tdeck··on Oregon Police Are Charging a Local News Outlet $2.5M for Records About One Cop
Is there a transcript of the meeting anywhere?
tdeck··on Washing machines took decades to catch on
It saved your muscles from the very tiring work of agitating the contents of the washtub.
tdeck··on No signs of AI payoff outside the tech sector
This is small-scale but I know a lot of Blind people who are vibe-coding accessible tools to solve their problems. Most of them have never done any programming at all.

For example, my friend Marco has built like 10 different apps. I've used some of them and they're useful. I think this is an example of something that just wouldn't be happening on this scale without LLMs.

This one showed up in HN a while ago

AI transcribed chart said the patient took psychedelics when they never said that.

tdeck··on PHP Foundation 'under-funded' with one full-time staff member, director says
Unfortunately those sound like organizations that wouldn't see much value in the goodwill generated by funding PHP.
tdeck··on PHP Foundation 'under-funded' with one full-time staff member, director says
Slack's backend is PHP I believe.
tdeck··on Reforming English Spelling
In my (mostly standard I think) dialect of American English sufficient and proficient are pronounced with a schwa and rhyme, while deficient is pronounced with a "short i" sound or a schwa.
tdeck··on Group in San Francisco graftng fruit-bearing branches onto street trees
If you appreciate street tree fruits just know you can eat these when they're red and soft, they taste like a slightly bland peach:

https://i0.wp.com/gathervictoria.com/wp-content/uploads/2019...

And the small plums on these purple plum trees (they're hard to see because they are the same color as the leaves when ripe):

Both are popular ornamentals in the bay area.

tdeck··on Evolving Threat: http2shell is an RCE in Node, Python, and more
> I's probably to take the side of caution, treat everything as important and update everything promptly

The risk is that if people keep seeing headlines about some vuln emergency that isn't in fact exploitable in most cases they'll just start to ignore them.

tdeck··on Reforming English Spelling
I'm an American and don't remember ever hearing this pronunciation. Wiktionary lists /draʊt/ for both the US and UK pronunciation. America has a lot of regional accents though, it's not unbelievable to me that this exists somewhere.
tdeck··on Reforming English Spelling
This doesn't seem clear cut to me. Sufficient and deficient have the same stress pattern, but deficient doesn't have a double letter. Neither does proficient.
tdeck··on Reforming English Spelling
> In support of its adoption of "drouth" in place of "drought" THE TRIBUNE cites the fact that most persons use the pronunciation indicated by the first — and simpler — spelling.

This one seems very strange. Do people really pronounce the final sound as /θ/?

tdeck··on The compiler was supposed to end programming too
It's not worth arguing with the troll. Obviously opining about a task is not the same job as doing the task. Everyone understands this. It's like saying "my cooking got better when I delegated the implementation to a private chef".
tdeck··on Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash
Japanese customers are very harsh with ratings on Google as well. When I was living in Japan I learned that restaurants with like 4.2 stars were often really good. It's calibrated differently inareas with a lot of foreign tourists though.
tdeck··on The No Kings Takedown Is Why You Shouldn't Rent Your Megaphone from Zuck
Maybe it's because Brad Lander "proudly" invested New York City's money in Israeli weapons company Elbit Systems during the midst of the Gaza genocide. That should count for something.
tdeck··on The compiler was supposed to end programming too
It's also an abstraction to hire a software engineer and tell them what kind of app you want, but I don't think we can call it "programming" at that point.
tdeck··on The No Kings Takedown Is Why You Shouldn't Rent Your Megaphone from Zuck
Frankly this kind of premature excuse making won't get us anywhere. People say they're concerned about the rise of fascism or oligarchy but when it comes to pushing back, even the smallest bit of inconvenience is too much.

The Montgomery bus boycott lasted 381 days. People walked miles and organized carpools to work for over a year.

Now we can't even imagine making the sacrifice to send our friends and family an SMS, let alone getting them to download Signal when they kinda don't want to.

tdeck··on The No Kings Takedown Is Why You Shouldn't Rent Your Megaphone from Zuck
In case folks aren't aware, the Hind Rajab Foundations goes after IDF war criminals who post videos of themselves smiling while committing war crimes. The reason there are so many such videos is that these war crimes are popular in Israel. The IDF even had to repeatedly remind the soldiers to stop posting their own war crimes to social media.
tdeck··on The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines

Seems kind of cool actually. Unfortunate that this is the way I heard about it.
tdeck··on AfD Leak: What 421,179 Hacked Emails Show about the German Far Right
Interesting how the answers you're getting are just a variation of the 14 words.
tdeck··on AfD Leak: What 421,179 Hacked Emails Show about the German Far Right
> the center-right party copies the far-right messages in hopes of gaining the votes of the far-right voters, then enters a coalition with them as the "voice of reason to reign them in", to ultimately just achieve normalization of those narratives, a hollowed-out democracy, destroyed political discourse and an empowered far-right party.

Now imagine you had only a center-right and a far-right party, and you have the U.S. :/
