tdedecko··on Ask HN: Do darker pixels use less power?
This idea has come up a while ago and has been shot down. Research suggests that it would not reduce energy consumption. Here is Google's take on it: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/08/is-black-new-green.ht...

If you feel strongly about it you can always use: http://www.blackle.com/

This problem has already been solved sufficiently. I use Google calendar and its reminder feature.
tdedecko··on Science Center sued for rejecting anti-evolution film
Bad example. I gave Expelled a 1 on IMDB for the sole reason I thought it was very badly made (for a documentary). Some votes might be because the movie is "being punished" but I seriously doubt all are. There certainly are enough ID advocates to cancel out the negative votes.
tdedecko··on Science Center sued for rejecting anti-evolution film
I tried watching Expelled a week ago. I approached it with an open mind trying to be able to see an alternate perspective. Unfortunately, I found it to be nearly unwatchable. I didn't like it because the presentation made it impossible for the documentary to even present an argument. Cuts during interviews were so rapid that I could barely understand the context of any statement. Furthermore, the rapid cuts symbolize an intention to mislead or misinterpret what people say. I got to point where Ben Stein visits the concentration camps. I was so perplexed by this I just turned the movie off.

As for the information contained in Expelled. It was hard to interpret because it was filled with so much opinion. Nothing was hard fact enough for me to consider that the professors were fired for an invalid reason.

tdedecko··on Ask HN: Should I go with Chromium or Google Chrome?
I'm currently using Chromium on Ubuntu. I find the dev builds to be buggy. It is not very stable and it has some really annoying display bugs.

I haven't tried Chrome yet, but if you are looking for stability I would trust it over Chromium.

tdedecko··on Ask HN: More types of flagging?
You could try not acknowledging downvotes on a new item until the number of downvotes reaches a threshold. For example the first downvote on an item would have no impact on the score or the placement of the item on the page. If the threshold is 2 then, the item would be affected after 2 downvotes. At that point the normal result for downvoting would occur. This would require two people to independently interpret the quality of an item. Though, I am only considering the case of an item being only downvoted.

Another idea I have is to require a reason for the downvote. Reasons could include: disagreement, uncivil, or offtopic. The score could be affected according to the reason. This could make downvoting more thoughtful and scores could be impacted less for disagreement.

Last idea: Instead of hiding all scores. Only hide the score for items with a score less than or equal to 1. These scores have less relevance and I think people will be less critical of comments if they don't see a negative score attached.

tdedecko··on The story of how the dinosaurs disappeared is getting more and more complicated
The supposed impact is merely a data point that could be used to interpret Earth impact periodicity. It can only contribute to our to our current collection of data. Defining it as evidence in support or against periodicity is premature.
tdedecko··on The story of how the dinosaurs disappeared is getting more and more complicated
I disagree. This event does not support the Nemesis hypothesis. This might only add evidence to suggest that there is periodicity to Earth impacts. Although, it might not. As I understand it the idea of periodicity for impacts is debated and is not statistically conclusive.

There are other hypothesizes besides Nemesis to explain the supposed periodicity of impacts. Essentially, we need something to cause a gravitational change to the Oort cloud. Other possibilities include Brown dwarfs and black holes or precession in the rotation of the milky way.

tdedecko··on New ocean forming in African desert
Yes, spreading rate is really the thing to measure. The reason being, is that this region is faulted and rifted throughout. This particular rift is one of many. Rather than elongating; the rifts will join and will connect northward to the Red Sea. It seems that rifts are nearly connecting now. Though, it will take millions of years to finish this connection and create this sea.

I found some information on the spreading rates. Seems the plates are spreading at rates of 15 mm/yr in the north and 6 mm/yr in the south.

Here are some other references: http://www.ees.rochester.edu/ebinger/Site/Publications_files... http://www.see.leeds.ac.uk/afar/index.htm

tdedecko··on New ocean forming in African desert
This article claims that it could take 4 million years for the crack to each the red sea.

Typically, spreading rates are measured in millimeters a year. I don't know what the spreading rate is for this rift.

tdedecko··on Boycott websites that send you email with your password in clear text
I don't think a boycott is the best way to proceed with this problem. For starters, I don't think you will get enough publicity to bring a boycott to critical mass. Secondly, I think it would be more useful and effective to send an email to the perpetrating website, inquiring or complaining about their password storage techniques. When customers/users complain, a good business will respond and attempt to resolve the problem.
tdedecko··on Ask HN: How do you stay (somewhat) healthy?
Exercise: Cycling is my default. I enjoy it and happen to live in a great place to engage in it. I try to do short rides on week days (~30 miles) and longer rides on weekends (~70 miles). In two weeks I'll be doing my first century ride. Besides cycling, I play Ultimate at least once a week, goto the gym 3 to 4 times a week, rock climb and hike when I have time. At times I throw into my regime some running, tennis, or soccer. Essentially, I try to be as active as possible.

Food: I eat mostly vegetables, rarely red meat. Typical meals are: Breakfast (2 egg scramble with pepperjack and salsa; with some juice), Lunch (sliced turkey, pepperjack and a tomato on whole grain bread, with some fruit), Dinner (usually some sort of vegetable stir fry, pasta vegetable combination, or rice and beans with vegetables). Between meals I either eat some fruit or some cereal or granola with soy milk or yogurt. Throughout the day I drink lots of water and usually some juice.

Caffeine: I am in love with tea my default being loose leaf jasmine green. Coffee is a rarity. Red bull is never an option.

tdedecko··on Google Maps Street View capture... from a bike
This is great for the Google Maps walking feature. Assuming they are gather gps data for these bicycle paths. This should enhance the walking feature to give it more specific and direct directions for being on foot or bike. The visual data is useful for cyclists to check road conditions. (I use street view to ensure that roads aren't dirt roads.)

tdedecko··on In Our Inbox: Hundreds Of Confidential Twitter Documents
Initially, I was shocked that they would post the stolen information. Eventually I realized that this is going to be publicly available regardless of whether Techcrunch posts it or not. The information would be released elsewhere. As a news site, they are unable to ignore its existence.

Techcrunch has discussed this with Twitter. They have also decided not to release private information. From this I can say that they are being fair about this.

This does suck for Twitter. Though, it does bring to light the potential dangers of using a web service to host your confidential documents.

"the original security hole seems to be Google, via Google Apps for your Domain. Some passwords were guessed and things started to fall apart from there. Most (or all) of these documents were downloaded from Google’s servers."

tdedecko··on Draw a math symbol and get the corresponding LaTeX code
Just showed this to a math PhD grad student. Her eyes immediately lit up. She instantly determined that who ever made this, is in fact a genius.

Great idea and great implementation. I have seen so much LaTeX frustration. This will definitely ease a lot of pain.

tdedecko··on Love alpha versions? Try my new web app.
Looks great for an alpha.

Some suggestions:

1. Improve the interface and make it clear how to use the app. The language isn't clear to me, such as the difference between a 'tracker' and an 'area'.

2. Make it so I can enter a days worth of data very easily. One single form for all my trackers.

3. Make it so I can compete/compare myself with other users. Maybe just friends that I select or maybe any other users. You could add user ranking charts, graphs, etc.

tdedecko··on Trying to hack a good night's sleep
Surprised that Zeo wasn't mentioned in the article. The startup just launched their product 2 weeks ago. It helps track your sleep patterns using a head band that reads brain activity. The software analyzes this information to help improve your sleep. It also has an alarm clock that waits until you are no longer in deep sleep to wake you up.
tdedecko··on Seeking a Better Way of Living in Co-housing
Sort of but not exactly. Meeting your neighbors can only go so far.

I am connected to a co-housing community in my city. There is a street of houses with their backs joined. They removed the fences separating their backyards; creating an enormous community space with communal gardens, common areas, and a common house for parties, gatherings and community dinners. It is very easy to knock on their door and stop in. It is also very easy to meet everyone in the community because of the interconnectedness. Everyone in the community chooses to be part of the community and are therefore glad to help out, chat, or hangout.

Essentially, the advantages are that you don't have to make as much of an effort to meet your neighbors. You are already interconnected and the infrastructure is there to support everyones needs. There are also aspects of sustainability that add to the benefits.

tdedecko··on Ask HN: Please review our web app - TellMyPolitician.com
The search functionality needs to be on the homepage, so I can immediately see the benefits of your product.

Also, I think you should be marketing the search functionality and not the button. Make it easy to find a politician's information and then make it easy to contact them and you will find more people will use your button.

tdedecko··on Ask HN: bikechatter.com - review & suggestions
Not sure this is the best way to unclog the twitter feed. Something like a group in Tweetdeck would work really well to solve that problem.

Though, maybe you can do some neat things with this idea.

First thing that is apparent to me is that there is too much noise. This needs to be reduced in order for me to read this feed. Maybe an up vote system (HN, reddit, etc) to stress important tweets. You could also stress the important tweets with some other metric (number of replies, number of followers, etc).

Second thing that is apparent is that I don't know who half of these cyclists are. I need to know why I am reading x person's tweets. You could expand the bio pages to include more information on the each cyclist (full name, team, rankings, wikipedia link, etc). Also, I want a list of the cyclists that are being tracked.
