tersers··on NASA acknowledges it cannot quantify risk of Starliner propulsion issues
I don’t think they’re coming down until after election day. All the money and time devoted to this cannot result in any further failure. It’s an easy narrative for the GOP to spin with themselves as the only party that can beat China in the new space race over the failures the Biden/Harris administration, even if they’re only at arms length through NASA.

I dunno man lead was pretty great at a bunch of stuff so by your logic we should use it again, just like asbestos

tersers··on Lawsuits Block Thousands of Seattle Homes, $39M for Affordable Housing
This is a bad-faith argument. I have heard it throughout council hearings on housing in my city. NIMBYism itself is a prime example of greed and I don't see how it's any different.
tersers··on What Are 'Dark Factories,' and Do They Exist?
This does seem like an inevitability. It will likely stamp out a lot of black market, after-hours manufacturing.
tersers··on Amazon acquires 400 acres near new Intel development in Ohio
This is the simplest and most likely answer, not everything in tech is a big masterminded ploy
tersers··on World’s only sleeping bank website
This happens in Canada for credit unions and some online banks.

Fun fact, there exists a bug with EQ Bank where a deleted savings account still counts towards the maximum of 5 savings accounts. The customer service agent indicated this was a known bug and had been for some time! I'm planning to leave within the next year.

tersers··on Twilio’s toll fraud problem
Nothing would make me dispute a charge faster than being told not to dispute a charge
tersers··on The return of lazy imports for Python
I get an impression that regardless of topic, it’s difficult for any decisions to be made for the future of Python? The discussion seems to always revolve around “what if?”s in not the most collaborative fashion. I wonder if what most languages need are less experts in computer science or language theory or anything technical, and more folks that can do facilitation.

Love the videos! Would it be possible to have a clickable interactive demo where we can see what each node is doing?
tersers··on The New Hydrogen Car That Travels 2k Km with a Single Tank
Assuming hydrogen engines become viable, does hydrogen have any feasible distribution mechanism comparable to electricity? With the rollout of EVs, charging stations can be placed pretty much anywhere but we can’t say the same for hydrogen. Are we assuming existing gas stations can be converted or Will natural gas distribution improve to allow people to fill up at home?
tersers··on Super Simple Storage Service
It had me up until the SOAP example!
tersers··on A guide to building Lego Classic Town cars
I remember building these as a child. VCRs and DVDs and channel 3 and home phones have all come and gone, but this is the first time something has made me feel older.
tersers··on Covid-19 may have killed nearly 3M in India, far more than official counts show
You are in luck, they just updated it today.
tersers··on Servicing and repairing electric cars requires new skills
They definitely aren’t ready. Zoning as it exists requires extensive environmental cleanup or delays of at least a decade before development can happen. A bunch of land is going to lay fallow for a good while.
tersers··on Servicing and repairing electric cars requires new skills
There’s a subtext to this article, that cars are getting better at diagnosing themselves and the troubleshooting typical for older and ICE cars is required less and less. It’s not fair to say that an average mechanic wouldn’t be able to service new cars, but rather that new mechanics will be unable to repair anything but new cars who have their problems diagnosed with a computer.

tersers··on Replay-based attack on Honda and Acura vehicles
For years Honda has known the door lock mechanism is trivial to bypass and they haven’t fixed it, so I’m not surprised.

tersers··on Bill Gates says it was a "huge mistake" to spend time with Epstein
By that time was Epstein not already engaging in the abuse? If so then it’s not doing anyone any favours to associate with Epstein for any reason.
tersers··on The humble egg is an example of what’s wrong with nutrition studies (2019)
The concept of sticking to one particular form of eating has always bothered me. It's always felt like an attempt to find a panacea that doesn't require much analysis by the person of what they input to their bodies. Realistic eating is a lifelong responsibility of paying attention to what you're eating and the effects it has on your body. Perhaps what we need is a faster feedback loop of what the current state of your body is so you can make an adjustment.

There are definitely some foods that are better than others, but choosing a diet because it'll solve all your problems is the wrong way to address health.

tersers··on The joys of creating Xcode project files
Hasn’t been updated in a while, but “Texts from Xcode” (https://www.textfromxcode.com/) has some fun collections of frustrations.
tersers··on Ask HN: What novel tools are you using to write web sites/apps?
This is the first thread in a long while that's given me a lot of FOMO anxiety. I've made a lot of one-off server-side rendered apps in Flask, and right now I'm doing some backend work ASP.NET Core for my job, but I have this overwhelming feeling there's so much I don't know and I'm not sure where to start. I only bring this up in case I'm not the only person sharing these feelings.
