thepete2··on Donald Knuth – The Patron Saint of Yak Shaves (2017)
Besides Tex there is also git. Written only as a SCM for the linux kernel it went on to be used basically anywhere.
thepete2··on Keyboard lets people type so fast it’s banned from typing competitions
Yes, that's terrible. The finished text was not corrected in that time, was it?
thepete2··on Inviting another GitHub user to be your successor
Actually the trapped without internet thing makes me think. Why not do some sort of dead-man-switch? I.e. when you haven't committed (or been online) in X months the project is transferred to your successor.
thepete2··on Self-Hosting Dozens of Web Applications and Services on a Single Server
Not easy to set up. But perhaps easy to maintain
thepete2··on Should you contribute open data to OpenStreetMap?
Your edit to google maps is a competitive advantage. Your edit to OSM is a public utility.
thepete2··on Should you contribute open data to OpenStreetMap?
No and that is IMO the point of using OSM in the first place. The data is public and free for everyone and if you contribute there's the possibility of other services adopting your change. I know that mapbox integrates osm data, Google and Apple might too.
thepete2··on Selling my own GPL software, part 1: a lot of hurdles
Cool. I suspect this model will mostly work, but only if the price of the app is low enough to not justify a lot of inconvenience by compiling it yourself or maybe getting it from f-droid. I like this model a lot, apps like OsmAnd do the same.
thepete2··on Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes (2013)
apparently co2's density is only slightly higher than the other gases, so they all mix. Otherwise all of the atmosphere's co2 would be at ground level too, wouldn't it?
thepete2··on Apple’s use of Swift and SwiftUI in iOS 15
Don't swift and rust share a few of these things that make it "feel right"? With rust the whole ecosystem thing seems to be a lot better. Also rust has C(++) interop (so you have every library you could wish for), does swift not have that?
thepete2··on I started a paper website business
Out of curiosity: Is the first OCR example really the best you can find? Is there no open source solution that outputs good results for handwritten notes?
thepete2··on I started a paper website business
I think the point is that him sending out notebooks (he only has 100 of) doesn't scale.
thepete2··on uBlacklist: Blocks specific sites from appearing in Google search results
it has it, says so right on the page
thepete2··on Ask HN: What things has tech made worse in your life?
Agree. I particularly hate advertisements in public spaces. I often consciously try to avert my eyes, it's like pollution to me, just visual/mental.
thepete2··on Who is the most accurate world chess champion?
I don't know if this is a thing, but chess players might also steer the game in a direction/position which their opponent hasn't studied much, but they have. There's a "social" side to this seemingly "mathematical" game, no?
thepete2··on See brands' supply chain linkages that are contributing to Amazon deforestation
It states that amazon deforestation is driven by demand for beef and leather. Presumably leather is easier to transport and hence global leather demand plays a role here? Just a guess though.
thepete2··on Running a Law Firm on Linux
I find the Markor app (open source) great for editing text files, you can also customize it quite a bit. Then for uploading possibly syncthing would work.

(I do this to sync my text files between my PC and phone, works great)

thepete2··on Blender 3.x roadmap
You're right. I'm so annoyed by firefox changing its interface every once in a while instead of coming up with a good one that they can actually keep stable for years...
thepete2··on Reasons to switch from Windows to Linux
price

possibly security

free software (if one cares)

thepete2··on Reasons to switch from Windows to Linux
many, but not all of them
thepete2··on Reasons to switch from Windows to Linux
I believe the option is only shown if you are offline, so you need to disconnect from the internet.
thepete2··on PinePhone Pro Announced
Yes. It seems a more powerful cpu was the most requested improvement to the original Pinephone. I'm glad they listened.
thepete2··on PinePhone Pro Announced
I mean, couldn't you dual-boot android on this thing? Or is the SoC not supported?
thepete2··on Pine64: Introducing the PinePhone Pro
and if you're a developer you can get it even earlier

thepete2··on Pine64: Introducing the PinePhone Pro
I also appreciate their honesty when it comes to software maturity:

> While mobile Linux isn’t in a state that could satisfy most mainstream electronics consumers, we recognize that a sizable portion of our community is ready to make the jump to a Linux-only smartphone today.

thepete2··on Pine64: Introducing the PinePhone Pro
"Tasks such as opening applications, browsing the internet, interacting with the user interface or watching videos are on par with recent mid-range Android smartphones."

If this holds true, I'm truly excited

thepete2··on Governor vows criminal prosecution of reporter who found flaw in state website
That comparison is a bit off though, because exposing the mayor's corruption doesn't put other people and their data at risk.
thepete2··on Syncthing: Syncing All the Things
I know there's Syncthing lite, but is there a way to "browse" your synced folders (without actually syncing) and then mark them for syncing to the phone? I'd love it if I could do that because my phone's storage is obviously limited.
thepete2··on Galaxy Upcycling: How Samsung Ruined Their Best Idea in Years
not really, there's postmarketOS. Although only a handful of devices work well, you can still get some use out of many phones.
thepete2··on Show HN: Print a WiFi Login Card
My first though was "Why would I ever enter my wifi credentials into a web form?", but perhaps there are people who would...
thepete2··on Ask HN: What's your favorite mind mapping tool?
I just played around with VYM a bit (after looking at this list [0]), seems to work ok when you know the shortcuts, I might use that in the future.
