thescrewdriver··on U.S. judge approves $415M settlement in tech worker lawsuit
Given the amounts involved likely as a single McDonalds meal voucher per recipient.
thescrewdriver··on Fix Windows 10
That won't be true for everyone. Why should we just accept less privacy?
thescrewdriver··on Fix Windows 10
Unfortunately 90% of useful apps aren't on F-Droid.
thescrewdriver··on Fix Windows 10
Probably not much point in disabling that. Disabling downloads from other machines on the web makes more sense if you have a data cap or are charged per MB, which is common in some countries. It's not really a privacy-related change as far as I can see.
thescrewdriver··on Fix Windows 10
The ironic part is that people have just become accustomed to (or ignorant of) the way data is gathered from your average Android phone. Everyone is upset about Win10, but little attention is given to Android and the associated ecosystem of apps.
thescrewdriver··on Fix Windows 10
The guide shows how to disable sending updates from your computer to other computers on your LAN or on the Internet. It doesn't suggest disabling updates anywhere...
thescrewdriver··on Updates Make Windows 7 and 8 Spy on You Like Windows 10
Maybe some small businesses don't care, but the people whose data they are handling might not agree with that stance.
thescrewdriver··on Updates Make Windows 7 and 8 Spy on You Like Windows 10
Because every small business uses Win10 enterprise?
thescrewdriver··on [dead]
It's one of two pieces of information he is claiming to have have learned. It's relevant as it narrows down the list of suspects somewhat.
thescrewdriver··on Updates Make Windows 7 and 8 Spy on You Like Windows 10
I doubt there are enough people who care. Google has already proved that seemingly benevolent spying is a highly profitable business model. Most people aren't bothered, or even know, that they are being "Scroogled". Microsoft is just following suite. Sadly it seems to be a sign of things to come.
thescrewdriver··on Windows 10 users are being banned from torrent sites
> Compared to my Android phone Windows 10 is absolutely mute.

I think this says more about Android than it does about Windows 10. Windows 10 has crazy defaults, but so does android and many android apps want access to my info for no good reason (e.g. news apps wanting access to list my accounts, my phone number, my contacts, precise location etc.). Comparing privacy defaults of Windows to Android is not comparing it to a particularly high bar.

thescrewdriver··on Rust in 2016
It would be fantastic if Jetbrains was building an IDE for Rust somewhere in their basement. One can only hope...

Why does the article title lead with the nationality of the company?
thescrewdriver··on Disable Windows 10 Tracking
> Because there is a difference between "can voluntarily use" and "is rammed down your throat".

I got gmail rammed down my throat pretty hard when I needed to install an app from the play store on my Android phone... Google search was also front and center on the home screen.

thescrewdriver··on Disable Windows 10 Tracking
>> updates hadn't installed automatically because Windows Update was too busy advertising Windows 10

> That does not make much sense, if any.

I saw exactly the same thing. The entire updates to install section in the Windows update(s) app was covered over by a big green update to Windows 10, and that was after I cancelled my Windows 10 reservation. I eventually just downloaded the damn thing, but haven't installed it yet.

thescrewdriver··on Disable Windows 10 Tracking
You have to know that your privacy defaults are batshit crazy when people start developing tools to automate correcting them.
thescrewdriver··on Even when told not to, Windows 10 doesn't stop talking to Microsoft
I've currently got a system with the Windows 10 downloaded, but I am hesitant to actually proceed with the (up?)grade. Like many people I assumed that it was just the same old Windows with more enhancements, not something with batshit crazy privacy defaults, that even when disabled still leak data.
thescrewdriver··on Even when told not to, Windows 10 doesn't stop talking to Microsoft
Until recently Microsoft had taken a far more reasonable approach to privacy than say Google. Anyone remember the MS "gmail man" ads mocking the way Google inspects your email when MS doesn't? It seems that MS under Nadella has taken a decidedly Google-like turn away from privacy with Windows 10. MS seems as hell-bent as Google and Facebook to collect as much data about you as possible, even if it is for seemingly innocuous purposes.
thescrewdriver··on Even when told not to, Windows 10 doesn't stop talking to Microsoft
Very few people will read the privacy terms. Just because they have a document people clicked 'agree' below without reading doesn't mean that MS should not be held to account for what Windows 10 is leaking. For many users not using Windows isn't an option.
thescrewdriver··on Google plans monthly security updates for Nexus phones
Apple demonstrates that it's possible to keep devices up to date, an example which the Android manufacturers could emulate.
thescrewdriver··on Google plans monthly security updates for Nexus phones
I'm not suggesting that it's Google's fault (well other than forcing OEMs to shove Google stuff down my throat). It's a general complaint about the android ecosystem as a whole. Even Windows 98 got more regular security updates than most android phones.
thescrewdriver··on Google plans monthly security updates for Nexus phones
It's not just the operators. If an Android phone is more than 12 months old manufacturers simply stop providing updates, and even if they did they'd have to wait for the operators to add their crapware. It's a problem with the Android ecosystem as a whole, which doesn't seem to affect (the overpriced) iPhone from what I can see.
thescrewdriver··on Google plans monthly security updates for Nexus phones
That doesn't help for 99.9% of Android devices out there (including mine) which aren't Nexus phones, and will only receive 1 or 2 updates, usually within 12 months of purchase and nothing after. The only way to stay current for Joe public is to buy a new phone every year. Lack of long-term updates (along with getting everything google shoved down my throat by default) are the primary reason's I'm actively considering alternatives to my current preference for buying Android phones.
thescrewdriver··on In Zimbabwe, We Don’t Cry for Lions
I read your original reply before you deleted it, which made it clear that you had misread my post, in particular you missed the word "economy" in "...where the US economy is reduced to ashes...". Reduced to ashes is a (rather common) reference to the Zimbabwean economy not an actual fire.
thescrewdriver··on In Zimbabwe, We Don’t Cry for Lions
> First off, you should be ashamed at how ridiculous that analogy is.

The analogy looks spot-on to me, just substitute 'Zim' for 'US' and 'Harare' for 'New York'.

thescrewdriver··on In Zimbabwe, We Don’t Cry for Lions
You don't need to do or interfere with anything. It's about how much public attention and coverage it's getting. One furry lion being killed trumps the misery and suffering of millions.

Imagine a world where the US economy is reduced to ashes and people are starving in the streets of New York, and the rest of the world is only outraged by somebody shooting a specific moose in Alaska.

thescrewdriver··on In Zimbabwe, We Don’t Cry for Lions
I think they are actually saying "Killing one lion is completely insignificant compared to the real issues Zimbabwe faces (thanks to the disastrous policies of the Mugabe government). So much publicity and so many tears in the US, yet virtually no public concern and tears for the complete meltdown of the country over the last 15 years."

Which begs the question:

How long will content providers last if they decide to not show content to iOS users?

thescrewdriver··on Yahoo Offers New Mobile Chat Service Featuring Silent Video
Quite a neat idea. It's a while since I've seen something from Yahoo that I would consider different or original. They also have a new Flickr app now which lets you back your phone's photos up to Flickr with 1TB free storage which is also pretty neat.
