thewileyone··on macOS 27 does not support CoreStorage volumes
Gave up on Apple after my MBP is effectively stuck in High Sierra and can't run anything modern, no thanks to the App Store removing older versions of software.
thewileyone··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Which is a horrible interface IMO.
thewileyone··on Patrick Stewart has died
Had the privilege of attending his one-man show of A Christmas Carol in 1992-93. Amazing actor who very obviously loved his craft and his audience.

RIP Sir Patrick

thewileyone··on US President says he will ban the term 'artificial intelligence'
Let's reserve AI for Donald Trump himself, the American Idiot.
thewileyone··on Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11
I was the system tester for "a modern Internet-based application" in 1996 used by a global logistics company. Fast forward 25 years and I went to local logistic branch to ship out some packages. Out of curiosity, I peeked over the desk to look at what software they were using. It was the same 25-year old "modern Internet-based application".

If it ain't broke I guess. Long live ELMO!

thewileyone··on Behind the scenes at the NeXT Computer office
There was also 3DFX that led the way, before NVIDIA, with their Voodoo cards. The night and day difference of gaming on a Trident card vs a Voodoo card made grown men cry.
thewileyone··on Behind the scenes at the NeXT Computer office
First encounter with NeXT was when a lab full of black cubes appeared in school over a summer. Immediately became my favorite lab and I spent as much time as i could in that lab messing around on those cubes.

Second encounter was with my first tech job. This time, Pentium Pros was the hardware and the company used OpenStep to develop a paperless hospital solution. Spent about 2 years working on different bits and pieces. Great times!

thewileyone··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
You almost had me in the first half ... yeah it's plain old 2D checkers with this administration.
thewileyone··on What shall I teach my son?
Microsoft would not have exploded with success if they had not gotten the DOS contract from IBM.
thewileyone··on EA is shutting down BioWare
I'm playing ME: Andromeda now on a handheld and I don't get the hate. Sure it's not ME2 but graphically more polished though the storyline lacks the impact of the first trilogy. Otherwise, I think it's a fine game.
thewileyone··on Personal software factories are a waste of time
I don't know about "factory" but I've built personal libraries, templates and methodology on how to solve problems or create stuff across different tech stacks. I don't think those were a waste of time then or now.
thewileyone··on Theranos-Style Fraud Has Become the Norm
Tesla's flying Roadster, and previous Roadster, is also fraud.
thewileyone··on Tesla 'Cannot Guarantee' Roadster Reservation Holders Will Ever Get a Car
Taking deposits for a product that may never be manufactured and delivered is an accounting hack to boost revenue numbers.
thewileyone··on Israeli settlers attack olive framers & Washington Post journalist in West Bank
Same question.
thewileyone··on An open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Microsoft Word in pure Rust
To me, the key point is that this is the type of mass market disruption that AI can create. This is just the first of many that we'll see where the corporations are not the beneficiaries of AI.
thewileyone··on Trump says anyone who uses the phrase "artificial intelligence" is "the enemy"
He won't be forgotten. He'll be studied in political science, psychology, criminal studies, history, economics, forever. His legacy will be simply be to join the list of people with narcissistic tendencies that should have never been given power.
thewileyone··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
Sounds like a potential attack vector for a compromised phone ... just saying ...
thewileyone··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
"Vibe-coding rescue" is a new industry. Check it out.
thewileyone··on Kakistocracy
More than several instances of this around the world right now.
thewileyone··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
I've worked at a multi-national bank with HQ in London, Operational HQ in Singapore, Shared Services in Malaysia, India and China, Data centres in Hong Kong, Dubai and back in England. Every day was basically remote working with teams across the globe. No video; email, IP phones and audio-only meetings on MS Office Communicator. When the bank downsized office space so that 1/3 of shared services had to work from home, wasn't an issue at all because we were so used to working remotely.

This biggest issue is that new and middle managers are only trained to manage, not to lead. They feel that they must be able to reach out and touch someone to manage, hence RTO.

thewileyone··on DOGE is done. What happened to its records?
Property of Elon Musk
thewileyone··on LARP – Revenue infrastructure for serious founders
Gross Revenue is sometimes passed off as Revenue in reports, until you examine the fine print.
thewileyone··on You paid me, a long-time Linux user, to use Windows 11 exclusively for a month
As a long-time Windows user, from 3.11 onwards, sometime Macbook owner and a Linux tinkerer on spare devices, Windows 11 is a step backwards in UI with all it's inconsistencies and forceful but poor implementation of new features. Linux, the distros I've tinkered with, seems to be more polished and consistent across the board.

Only reason I still use Windows is AAA games and MS SQL Server, which I prefer using SSMS to control.

thewileyone··on Windows Drops Under 60% in Global Desktop OS Share for the First Time in Years
Correct, the personal computer is not the entry point for computing anymore.
thewileyone··on PlayStation can delete all your digital games after 3 years of inactivity (EU)
I bought the Orange Box years and years ago and to install this Steam launcher to play Counter-Strike, what a pain in the a$$. Stop playing, promptly forgot about it.

Years passed, and wanted to play something else that was on sale on this Steam thing that seemed familiar so reinstalled it. To my surprise, my old Orange Box games were still there.

That has led to an unhealthy 20 years of hoarding on-sale games like Smaug.

Thanks, gaben!

P.S. Sony is screwing their fans.

thewileyone··on Should European housing politics be Americanized?
It like watching car crash videos ... It's hard to look away ...
thewileyone··on Peppa Pig studio wants to clone child actors' voices with AI indefinitely
Something innately creepy about creating new content in perpetuity with a voice that no longer exists.
thewileyone··on Can China build its own ASML?
R&D is difficult and expensive which makes this "logic folding" more impressive. It might not have been a new idea but Huawei, against all the demonization against it over the last 10 years, is commercializing it and that's a huge achievement.

R&D is difficult and expensive which is why the US and Europe gives up on many cutting edge technologies and relies on the tried and true and discounting opportunities. This will be the end of their dominance.

thewileyone··on Federal judge rules Trump's $100k fee for H-1B visas unlawful
Has your friend changed her mind about Trump or is now just blaming Biden for Trump having to these things that impacts her?
thewileyone··on Doing nothing at work
If you're still learning or giving opportunities to learn new things, stick it out. If you're stagnating and not allowed to learn new things, it's time to leave.

For the first 10 years or so, this is relevant. After that you can figure out what you really want to do.
