timlin··on Everyone hates the electronic medical record
> Judith Faulkner at Epic (no medical background)

I suppose that's technically true although wikipedia states that she cofounded Epic with a medical doctor and is married to a medical doctor. As a software developer, I rely on subject matter experts frequently. I'm not an expert in radiology, chemical engineering, or any of the other businesses that I support.

Did you try Google Keep? It does exactly what you ask for: sharing a simple todo list with another person.
timlin··on German banks are hoarding so many euros they need more vaults
I'm genuinely curious. Do you need to go to a physical bank location to do this? How do you buy a car in the evening or a Saturday afternoon, when a bank is closed?
timlin··on Show HN: Write a private diary using good old email
No, not every email server supports it. For example, I know that Office 365 Exchange doesn't support it as I tried it yesterday.

However, if the system isn't maintained it often needs replaced at a large expense. Most homeowners don't know how to inspect and don't bother to hire someone knowledgeable.

Our local township has an ordinance where every residential sewage system (10k residents, not sure how many systems that is) has to be pumped out and inspected by a certified sewage hauler. This way, the homeowner knows about and is required to make simple repairs before the entire system fails.

timlin··on Show HN: Learn how to work remotely from people doing it every day
I've been working remote from home for 15 of the past 18 years.

Taking it a step further, the biggest problem with "my door is shut, I'm at work" is that I sometimes need to open my door. Perhaps for lunch or a snack. Or just to stretch my legs and think. Just because my family sees me wandering around the house doesn't mean I'm available.

I've found that it works best to have my wife & kids email me questions/info/thoughts even though we're in the same house. I can then respond when I'm available. Sometimes via email or sometimes by initiating a conversation.

If that's true, it'll be years before 1.0. There are many admin screens that this new tool will have to replicate.
timlin··on SQL Operations Studio
What do you mean "inline text search for sproc"?

I use a combination of SQL Hunting Dog http://sql-hunting-dog.com/ (quick search all object names) and a SQL script from the (free) SSMSBoost plugin that looks at most object definitions but not table columns unfortunately. I've used Red Gate's SQL Search in the past but it's always been slow and buggy over the VPN.

If you're looking for a better execution plan utility, check out SQL Sentry's Plan Explorer. It's free.

timlin··on Under-building of new homes, high construction cost perpetuate housing shortage
Pennsylvania has a "Clean and Green" act [1] that "bases property taxes on use values rather than fair market values" for farmland. Must have at least 10 acres or produce $2,000 in annual revenue off the land. For me, this cuts my property taxes substantially. If farmland is pulled out of Clean and Green (perhaps to sell it for building houses?) the landowner owes back taxes of 7 years.

I would think that other states have similar programs.

timlin··on Unsealed Documents Raise Questions on Monsanto Weed Killer
> Now that lots of weed are resistant, farmers will have to figure out how to farm without > this shortcut. Roundup is obsolete, so nothing of value will be lost.

I'm a part-time farmer. My father and I manage about 35 acres, half in corn and half in soybeans. We no-till our fields which is very helpful for preventing soil erosion and fertilizer/manure runoff. We are located in the Chesapeake Bay watershed so we have to (and want to) pay close attention to farming best practices regarding excess nutrients and runoff.

We use Roundup for both a burn-down in the spring and for post-emerge weed management (1 quart to the acre). It continues to work well for us. Based on what I've heard, round-up resistant weeds mostly commonly occur in fields where crops are not rotated. Some farmers do plant corn on corn, year after year. I can see where that would lead to significant problems.

So, I'd say that your unqualified statement above "roundup is obsolete" is true for me although it may be partially true depending on the application.

timlin··on Ask HN: Why isn't VoIP better?
Yes, that is exactly what we do at work. We have ~20 IP phones in the office plus a few in remote locations. A few of us also use softphones (X-Lite or Zoiper) & USB headsets.

Our pbx is hosted by http://sipworxx.com/ and it works great.

timlin··on Techniques for Microsoft SQL database design and optimization
The biggest problem with scalar UDFs is not the IO performance. It is that they force the query to serial (non-parallel). On queries that return a non-trivial quantity of data, that hurts.

You don't know me then. I've forked a v1.0 OSS .Net project on bitbucket and am attempting to get it moving forward again. I have a number of pull requests queued, waiting on the original two devs to communicate. So far, they've commented on one ticket, that's it.
timlin··on Anti-GMO Activist Seeks to Expose Scientists’ Emails with Big Ag
In this context, "doused" is an emotional word and completely inaccurate.

After my GMO corn and soybeans are about 12" high, I use a contact spray (glyphosate) at a rate of roughly 10 gal/acre to selectively kill weeds. If you would watch the sprayer in the field, you would note that the nozzles are emitting a very fine mist. To me, it is an incredible feat of science that such little spray is able to completely and selectively kill the weeds.

Also, I'm not aware of ANY pesticides that are save for human consumption. To what are you referring?

Source: On the side, I farm 35 acres planted using no-till and GMO corn and soybeans. I hire a crop consultant to help me rotate pesticides to avoid developing glyphosate-resistant weeds.

timlin··on Ask HN: Should I get a mechanical keyboard?
I have been using a Rosewill RK-9000RE (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823201...) for several months. So far, I really like it although I would probably try the Cherry MX brown switches next time. I think the tactile bump would be nice.

I've tried the Kinesis Advantage a year ago. But it took a long time to adjust, especially the arrow keys and numeric keypad. And after I adjusted, I had trouble using my home computer keyboard.

timlin··on AI-Powered Meeting Scheduler X.ai Raises $9.2M Series A
Have you attempted to schedule a meeting with 3 busy people in your company with 3 busy executives and PMs from a client? It is annoying and frustrating.

Most of the solutions I'm familiar with require all scheduling parties to be on the same Exchange Server with calendar busy/away shared. Or you have to click-thru to a website and then deal with creating a user account.

Using email seems like a nice friction-free way forward. I hope they get traction!

timlin··on FarmLogs Raises $4M Series A To Further Advance Farming Into The Age of Apps
Sure, you're making my point exactly. The soundbite "5% of farms in the US are using Farmlogs" sounds impressive doesn't really mean much without further qualification. In fact, I find it misleading. So did you, evidently.

There are two (at least) different definitions of "farm." One is large commercial business often utilizing a thousand acres or more. I suppose these are FarmLogs' focus?

The other is family-operated (except for seasonal help perhaps), typically less than 250 acres. I live in Lancaster County, PA where farms average 78 acres. The farm I live on (and operate) is ~50 acres and has crop & animal revenue far less than $100k. But it's still a viable farm.

Average revenue per farm in Lancaster County is $183k. That's another almost meaningless number without knowing the distribution. I'd guess 10% of the farms I know are much more than $250k.

timlin··on FarmLogs Raises $4M Series A To Further Advance Farming Into The Age of Apps
I live on a small farm and know quite a few farmers socially. The 5% number seems hard to believe.

According to Wikipedia[1], there were 2.2 million farms in 2007. Since the number of farms is decreasing (land development, consolidation, etc), let's say today there are only 2 million. At 5%, that's 100k farms on FarmLogs. That's impressive. I wonder how many of them are paying customers?

Especially given that most farmers I know are older (think Baby Boomer age) and are barely competent using the Internet never mind an app/SAAS like this.
