timonoko··on Emacs Turns 50
Epsilon 1982 was very much Emacs, but programmable in C. But it loaded superfast in MSDOS palmtop HP100LX. I made lots of Epsilon programs, which were easy to translate to real Emacs, of the fake Unix, made by Linus.

  command palidro() {
   set_mark();
   forward_character();
   kill_region();
   down_line();
   yank();
   up_line();
   backward_character();
   }
timonoko··on Cuba is skipping its November 1, 2026 clock change and staying on DST until 2027
It is your lifestyle son. I don't care what-o-clock it is. I just try to stay awake when sun is up. In northern latitudes it is vitally important, they say. Or rather youtube-doctor Andrew Huberman says.
timonoko··on Cuba is skipping its November 1, 2026 clock change and staying on DST until 2027
I have totally solved all issues. I have additional pointer on my watchface for the true position of the sun. https://photos.app.goo.gl/M95bW4XWR2NDUup46
timonoko··on The foolishness of "natural language programming" (1978)
We are now totally there: Programming With Natural Language.

I could only describe the "look and feel" of the ESP32-algorithm driving a sewing machine: "Snappy but not jerky, linear at low speeds, but accelerates fast".

Antigravity made it perfect but incomprehensible for a hewman.

timonoko··on Local Wikipedia: Wikipedia, but only for things a half hour walk from you
https://wiki-map.com/ considered much better.

Has local language too.

timonoko··on New 'super ice' 10 times stronger, bringing it close to the strength of concrete
Frozen fish is about the same strength as carbon fiber composite. You need carbide saw to cut it.
timonoko··on Why Sweden is abandoning its cashless society
Not a good analogy. The seller sees his own name and account number on the customers phone. Which means that the QR-code is read correctly and the money is in secured transit into his account.

There is only one situation when the system faults. And that is when the customers phone is destroyed before updating the server. But these are just virtual pennies for small everyday purchases.

timonoko··on Why Sweden is abandoning its cashless society
I think China is cashless society but not relying on internet servers. Beggars and street vendor have printed-out QR-code and no phone. You scan the code with Alipay-app and show the confirmation screen to the seller. This is not a real-time transaction. It is executed when the server is available.

Youtube-girl Qingyunji bought some water on remote mountain road using QR-on-cardboard and this is what I assume happened.

timonoko··on OpenSCAD the Programmers Solid 3D CAD Modeller
For these eternal Fillet-Whiners: Antigravity made simple Blender-tool that rounds all edges in STL-file. Sharp edges never look good in print and avoiding them feels often like too much extra work.

timonoko··on Whistle: Speech to Text in 16.9 MB
Google cuboard has improved greatly Lady Lady lately. Now it does almost understand Finnglish. The word "battery" was the worst, now it seems to go all right every time.
timonoko··on A third way of using Linux
If you were poor in 1993 and could only afford Unix shell-account, all this was very necessary. Nowadays little bit esoteric.

Albeit. I was using tmux on termux, until somebody pointed out you can get new terminal screens by swiping from right (corr. from left).

timonoko··on Shimano Bicycle Museum Review
I think Shimano become famed with "self-centering" derailleur some 50 years ago?

Before that you had to watch gears all the time.

I remember tinkering with my Ukrainian gears to make them more loose in "Shimano style".

History of Kharkiv Bicycle Factory in Ukraine.

https://uk-wikipedia-org.translate.goog/wiki/%D0%A5%D0%B0%D1...

Praiseworthy because "Timo Noko" is mentioned as a customer. Those bicycles were good but dirt cheap, maybe even 1/10 of Raleigh or Shimano.

timonoko··on My weird new hobby: Wandering around Tokyo on Google Maps
When you kayak along Norway coast, you have to use google street view constantly, because communities do not advertise their services seawards and you cannot see from bottom of the fjord what is happening up there.

In de olden times I tried to listen to cars for example. When they seem to slow down, there is invisible Co-op or Narvesen up there.

timonoko··on Sony's First Computer – The SMC-70 from 1982 [video]
This is from the time when Made in Japan meant cheap copy of things. Sony stole this Dark-Brown-Green + Grey color scheme from Olivetti. It was on all prof equipment like Tv-cameras and Beta-recorders.
timonoko··on Sony's First Computer – The SMC-70 from 1982 [video]
Exactly same colours and looks as Olivetti Teleprinter 1969. Amazing, almost creepy.
timonoko··on Making a Python interpreter in 1024 bytes
More interesting idea was to make compiler for some subset of Python bytecode. But Antigravity said this idea suxs, for some complex reasons. If the target is ATtiny, makes more sense to ask the AI translate Python to C++, which approach works amazingly well indeed.
timonoko··on Ask HN: Resources to get good at soldering?

timonoko··on How bicycle coaster brakes work (2018)
Two speed - Sturmey Archer was the best. No cables, no maintenance. Drove 4000 kilometers at one go and only needed new tire every 1000 km.
timonoko··on Restroom Archive
Situation Critical in Sweden:

Jag vill ha runda "Door Knobs" till mina innerdörrar! Finns det att hitta i Sverige och fungerar det till våra kantiga dörrpryttlar (ja, du vet de där som ser till att dörren hålles stängd. Vad sjutton heter det??)?

timonoko··on Restroom Archive
Door knob seems to be british-american thing?

Gemini: You've spotted a real historical and geographical divide. Door knobs are predominantly an Anglo-American standard, while lever handles dominate continental Europe, Scandinavia, and much of the rest of the world.

timonoko··on Restroom Archive
Kiri Engine with AI and Splats might be even better on this.
timonoko··on Restroom Archive
Only in America: Door knob so you cannot use your sleeve to exit sanitarily.

Also obligatory fluffy and sticky floor mat is missing.

timonoko··on OpenShot 4.0: Record, Edit, and Color Like Never Before
I have dream that Oneday Oneday these surpass Cinelerra, written in 1996. Thirty Years Ago.
timonoko··on Emacs vs. Vim 2026: 24.3% vs. 8% Usage, 20x Memory Gap
TIL Vim Script. OMG. LOL.

I asked Grok compile some elisp to Vim Script. It was possible but weird. Grok says it is not a language perse but ed-primitives with some add-ons like function! .

timonoko··on Experiments with Plotter Art
Silhouette-cutter/plotter by Google Gemini:

https://github.com/timonoko/Plotters/blob/main/gcodegen-from...

Github-repository is awful mess, but this might be of interest. It sends Gcode-command to EiBotBoard-plotter, which for some reason is popular among artistic types.

timonoko··on Show HN: I wrote a BASIC interpreter that boots on UEFI machines
No we do not.

There is correct time and correct season for everything.

-- 3 points by timonoko 11 days ago: Turbo Pascal on CP/M, MSX-DOS and MS-DOS:

I wrote Pascal for 8080 in 1976 and Finnish Army even paid some money for it. I was truly disappointed that Turbo Pascal did not copy my handy PORT-metavariable. You can write & read IO-ports without any extra hässle:

timonoko··on Show HN: I wrote a BASIC interpreter that boots on UEFI machines
Off-topic, but some average AI would have made all this in 7 seconds.
timonoko··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
You voted for this.

And there no mechanism you can fix it.

If you now vote for something else, they just cancel the results and make you vote again.
