tinyhouse··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
The writing was on the wall for a long time. All of big tech (and many midsize tech too) have way too many employees. In the AI era is just more absurd than it was before. I always appreciate companies that take care of their employees this way so kudos to Microsoft. We haven't seen the package they are offering yet but I'm assuming it'd going to be very good, esp for those who have been there for a while.
tinyhouse··on Anthropic S-1
Good for you if you have Anthropic shares! I have no clue how they keep their employees around once the 6 month lockup period ends. They all going to be multi-millionaires, either retire or leave to start something on their own.
tinyhouse··on Roku developer repositories moved from GitHub to GitLab
No horse in this race but GitLab has been down a few times recently too.
tinyhouse··on Arc Is Sunsetting
Is this just the product Arc or the entire company? (The Browser Company)
tinyhouse··on Claude Duet
Next week Google is dropping one too.
tinyhouse··on DeepSeek just open-sourced its inference engine
Currently this is true only for Anthropic's $20/month plan. I do a lot of work without reaching my limit. OAI's similar plan on the other hand isn't worth it - it used to be a great plan in the begining when they needed to catch up, but now I reach my limit very quickly on it. The only reason I keep it is because my entire family is using this account for their chatgpt usage.

The more expensive subscriptions are just not worth it for individuals. Using deepseek even at API prices is better value. If you're a company it might be a different story.

tinyhouse··on How employment is changing at Anthropic
I'm surprised this is not much more talked about these days. The hiring bar is going to increase so much in the next few years (already happening), and together with more layoffs driven by big tech, things aren't looking good.

Anyhropic is not a good example for anything. Their scale and growth is way beyond what like 99% of companies experiece. Their optimization formula is different.

tinyhouse··on DeepSeek search and fetch – $0.75 per 1000 successful requests
DeepSeek models are amazing and this search pricing is fantastic. All these companies like Parallel, Exa and others are gonna have hard time justifying their hefty valuations. Add Perplexity and many others into the mix. The demand for what they are building is there, but not the margins for the amount of money they raised.
tinyhouse··on DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017
Web search: $0.75 per 1,000 calls

That's way cheaper than openai and other web search providers. I have no doubt that AI demand justifies all the compute money big tech is spending now, but I also think there are so many over valued VC funded companies that are going to crash in the next few years.

tinyhouse··on Gemini 4 Argon
Google didn't release an impressive model since Flash 3. I tried Antigravity with the latest Gemini model for a week and it's the worse experience I had among more than 5 harnesses and models I tried (deeseek/pro, muse/spark-1.3, cc/opus, codex/sol, and Pi/sol). I haven't touched it since and canceled my pro subscription.

Then I tried Flash 3.8 for different tasks like OCR and others, and while in their benchmarks it crashes Flash 3, in my experiments I didn't notice much difference, often even Flash 3 performed better.

I hope Gemini 4 Argon is a real step up from that but we'll see once they release it. I'm rooting for Google and it's about time they deliver frontier intelligence, not just competitive prices.

tinyhouse··on Dots: Always-on agents
To Anthropic's credit, I find their overall design so much better than OpenAI's.
tinyhouse··on Dots: Always-on agents
One way that I find the AI space boring is that everyone is working on the same things. The release of Jev was a breath of fresh air.
tinyhouse··on I built non-autoregressive decision models with RL a year ago
You're right but it's not the full picture. It's much easier to market when you have a name brand behind you. Not sure the author would've done much better even if he messaged it better. It's like the difference between someone random saying something smart on Twitter and no one gives a shit and Karapthy saying the same thing and everyone talks about it. I'm not saying it in a bad way - those with clout around them earned the people's trust by doing something right. But it's not easy to get there and there are many people doing great things that get very little publicity if at all. Not to mention in this case Jev came from a startup that raised a lot of money and can spend it on good marketing.
tinyhouse··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
"Any company" is a big claim to make. We're years ahead of something like this becoming a reality. At that point not sure most companies will survive cause most things will be free.
tinyhouse··on DeepSeek launching v4.1 flash cheaper and more capable than v4 pro
I've been working with Pro and it's been great so far.
tinyhouse··on GPT-6 Astra
You can talk to OpenAI to create a silly game and order food. What a lame way to show the model capabilities. Has Alexa commercial vibes.
tinyhouse··on Muse Spark 1.3
Thanks. Just downloaded and pretty impressed so far. It's fast and nice to work with.
tinyhouse··on Muse Spark 1.3
I had no idea Meta has a coding agent harness. Does anyone have experience with it and can comment? The 1.3 contributor prices look very attractive. I'll probably start using their API if performance is good and the API is reliable with decent rate limits.
tinyhouse··on Nvidia projects $673B in sales as AI demand widens
As someone who uses AI all day it all makes sense. However, if AI is going to have serious impact white collar jobs as some people predict, the demand will decline. People without jobs won't pay for expensive subscriptions or API prices and the economy will be in recession.

For me the important question is where the economy will be in the next 5 years. Because if the economy is doing well, I have no doubt the AI demand will continue to sky rocket. I don't think it matters to Nvidia how uses their compute, closed or open models. The win either way.

tinyhouse··on GLM-5.3-Flash
Anthropic is accelerating their IPO cause they know what's coming in the next 5 years.
tinyhouse··on Claude Code weekly limits reduce by a third tomorrow
I actually use claude these days mostly for mission critical tasks and code reviews. Everything else I use Sol. I have $20/month plans on both. For non-coding I also use Gemini on a $20/plan. So far I haven't had any issues but we'll see how things go. I have Qwen3.8-27B installed locally but until I upgrade my mac it's not for day to day stuff.
tinyhouse··on Our position on open-weights models
Exactly. If you care about AI, simply don't use Anthropic - use open source.
tinyhouse··on International chess federation sanctions Kramnik
Are we talking about online chess cheating? Aren't players eventually need to show up and play in-person?
tinyhouse··on Half-Baked Product
This is so well written. Well done!
tinyhouse··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Cursor is great but they're all going to cash out and leave SpaceX as soon as they can.
tinyhouse··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
At least on Claude Code it's completely useless. It tells me to run all the commands myself cause it's blocked ("Classifier's blocking me again" lol). Just tried now and saw the msg: "There's an issue with the selected model (claude-fable-5[1m]). It may not exist or you may not have access to it. Run /model to pick a different model."

I really have no clue how Anthropic released this thing without doing any real testing. I did use it on claude.ai with no issues; talking just for code.

tinyhouse··on Nobody ever gets credit for fixing problems that never happened (2001) [pdf]
This is very true and applies for everything in life.
tinyhouse··on Ask HN: Why hasn't there been a real competitor to Ticketmaster yet?
I try to always buy tickets on TickPick when I can (no affiliation). No fees and total prices are often much better than Ticketmaster. But my usecase is almost always buying from resellers. I never up-to-date to buy official tickets.
tinyhouse··on Dropbox CEO Drew Houston to step down
Drew is clearly a very competent engineer who built an amazing product and company. He was the right person to build it from zero all the way to an IPO, but wasn't the right person to keep scaling it. Dropbox's product vision in the last 10 years was lacking to say the least. Their latest innovative product "Dash" is another flop, like Dropbox Password, Paper, and many others.
tinyhouse··on Anthropic acquires Stainless
False is too strong. Biased information is more appropriate.
