tithe··on Trump injured but ‘fine’ after attempted assassination at rally
I think you're right. That kind of language taps energy to get bases riled up, but it's a dangerous kind of excitement (panic?) that can lead to desperate acts.

It makes my stomach turn that people - and I - can be susceptible to this, and furthermore that it's taken advantage of. Politicians are skilled hackers, too.

tithe··on Trump injured but ‘fine’ after attempted assassination at rally
I think part of the answer is how you phrased the situation yourself, as a "battle of ideas."

The rhetoric by both "left" and "right" platforms pitches a divided America, and a "battle for the soul of the nation." Battle against whom? My own countrymen? For what? For my vision for America? I was unsettled when I heard this (but maybe I'm just too sensitive.)

When you combine this kind of inflammatory speech with blanket group classifications like "liberals" or "MAGA" or "democrats" or whatever, you've now identified an enemy in this "battle", and as I've seen lately, can completely lose sight that these people are our countrymen too.

What's the difference betweeen a folder, a collection, and favorites? And perhaps more importantly, can I delete those categories and start with a blank slate?

Congratulations on the launch!

tithe··on The saddest "Just Ship It" story ever (2020)
I've always thought that hanging a "beta" on a logo isn't an excuse to ship junk, but as you allude to, sometimes product and service quality isn't the priority.

I'm also reminded of Dave McClure's talk [0]: "Don't do your viral marketing campaign until your product doesn't suck! Because what will happen is people will tell other people that your product sucks! ...So don't do that!"

tithe··on Show HN: I made meetings more productive
I'd rework the copy to more clearly state just what Meetronome offers (anonymous meeting retrospectives) above the fold.

Currently, I have to read the caption in the first point below the fold, but until then I see claims ("Productive meetings...") and challenges ("your business' soon-to-be favorite tool...") and I'm not able to evaluate them.

Congratulations on the launch!

Sorry about that. I usually put a dot at the end of the TLD to bypass certain registration/paywalls (which is effective when browsing Reuters in Chrome/Brave).

Dan: the time has expired and I cannot edit the URL, but could we drop the trailing "." after the "com", please?

tithe··on Dataset Providers Alliance
"The DPA brings together a diverse range of AI data licensing providers and intellectual property owners, including those specializing in music, voice, text, video, and images. By establishing a unified voice for dataset providers, the alliance advocates for the interests of rights holders and works to create a sustainable and equitable ecosystem for the licensing of intellectual property content in the AI and ML industries."

tithe··on Biden offers citizenship path to spouses of US citizens
> The program will allow the spouses and children to apply for permanent residence without leaving the U.S., removing a potentially lengthy process and family separation. If they are granted green cards, they could eventually apply for U.S. citizenship.

So if I understand this correctly, currently you would either be deported or voluntarily leave (because you could not apply for an Adjustment of Status for a valid visa that you don't have), and apply for permanent residence from outside of the US via Department of State. That's the process that takes years.

But under the new rules, the valid visa requirement (or requirement for a visa at all?) for an Adjustment of Status would be waived, and while the process might still take years (which it currently does), you'd be able to be with your family while you wait.

tithe··on AMD CEO Lisa Su reminisces about designing the PS3's infamous Cell processor
Peter Hofstee (one of the chief architects of Cell) gave a talk at UT Austin around 2008.

At the time, UT was building TRIPS[0], a processor capable of > 1 teraflop / sec.

In the middle of his talk (with several TRIPS members present), he made an off-hand remark "I think I could build a petaflop processer...without too much trouble,"* which caused a small stir in the audience!

tithe··on Nietzsche's Guide to Greatness
I'd say that this is a bad idea: one of the points of education is learning from other people's mistakes!

(I'm not directing that statement at Nietzsche, but rather thinking of the wealth of practical advice from say, Epictetus.)

tithe··on Nietzsche's Guide to Greatness

tithe··on Jeff Bezos on Stress (2001) [video]
Replace "stress" with "worry" or "anxiety" and this makes a lot more sense to me (maybe Jeff explained this earlier in the video).

Anxiety for me is my brain telling me "there's something to be done, but you're not doing it." Stress, "you're doing that thing that needs to be done, but you're not making any progress."

tithe··on Show HN: I gamified AI logo generation for better designs
Congratulations on the launch!

> I was able to build reliable software that would make my life much easier by allowing me to focus on my specialty, which is coding and definitely not designing.

It sounds like by leveraging your strength you've minimized your weakness; very cool.

Here are a few things that jump out at me:

1. "You must be logged in to generate a logo."

Understandable, but I'd like to try it first! For example, shortbread.ai used to have a "token" system where you could generate 2 comics before being required to log-in (but they've since changed to an "authenticate first" system like owlai.art).

2. "Community Logos" -> "Unauthorized - You are not authenticated"

Hmm...so, either hide the "Community Logos" link until you've logged in and advertise the "Community Logos" concept in the website copy (eg, "Generate a logo for your idea. Get inspired by seeing what others have created."), or let me see a small sample of what other things people are making.

If you're concerned that they'll copy logos without signing up, we can limit the set of displayed logos to say, 10 logos, with a SQL statement that collects the first 10 logos made today (so by constantly refreshing the page you won't be able to harvest a large collection of them).

But I have a feeling you're already doing that with the 4 logos displayed on the home page...so I'd just hide the "Community Logos" link and advertise the "Community Logos" feature in the website copy.

3. `https://owlai.art/` leads to a domain parking landing page? How about an immediate redirect that doesn't require JavaScript:

   <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; url=https://app.owlai.art/">
4. When the viewport is less than 1024 pixels, the 4 sample logos disappear from the page! (MacBook with Brave)
tithe··on Show HN: Unforget, the note-taking app I always wanted: offline first, encrypted
It seems it's using `better-sqlite3`[0] and saving the database to a file called "private/unforget.db"[1].

(Although, I don't have experience with SQLite, so that file might be as volatile as `localStorage`.)

tithe··on Restaurants Place Big Bets on Cooking Robots
I imagine the "lower-end" will be capped via government mandate preventing a workforce from being more than X% of robotic labor.

...that is, until the robotic chefs bribe the politicians at the Capitol Grille by giving them more french fries with their burgers to support laws for robot rights!

tithe··on Celestia – real-time 3D visualization of space
One thing that has always unsettled me in these space simulators is the sense of scale.

Yes, the backgrounds I'm staring at don't scale; they're flat, fixed bitmaps due to limitations of the program.

But I let myself forget that sometimes, and the thought that I could keep moving in this direction seemingly forever, and the size of that planet wouldn't change, because the distance is so vast and the size of that planet is so huge and I am so minuscule and my progress is so infinitisemally insignificant, inspires a sense of dread, of strange hopelessness.

I suppose a VR experience would amplify this effect because now you're actually surrounded by this phenomenon: your eyes can perceive old light, ancient light, from places so distant, from objects so incomprehensibly vast, that physically you'll never be able to reach them nor make any significant progress in reaching.

I used to get this sense in mathematics sometimes when plotting graphs in scales with wild upper and lower bounds, just inconceivably large or small scales, and I could pan right and left and the curve just continues on to infinity (as numbers do..)

Mathematics itself containing the seeds of infinity is probably why I've always approached the subject with a sense of awe, that yes, it's an ingenious system used to model our world, but it contains concepts that have philosophical implications as well as numerical. I'm reminded of John Cleese's character in The Day The Earth Stood Still: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wpopz6HxU_w&t=78s

I feel like there's a term for this: dread when confronted with the infinite?

Anyway, time to go outside. The rose bushes are very near so as to be reachable :)

tithe··on Creating a matchmaker for your multiplayer game
Is matchmaking the process of players "always [being] sent to the datacenters with the best chance of having low latency"?

EDIT: No, it seems that it's literally grouping players together in multiplayer games (but doing so in a way where latency between players is minimized.)

tithe··on Show HN: I built a site to track your buy it for life items
Consider defining or showing a few examples on the landing page describing exactly what a "buy-it-for-life" item is.

I'm not sure if you mean items I'll be buying until death (like soap, toothpaste, and socks), or things I buy once and expect them to last for a lifetime.

I see the "ZSA - Moonlander" example, but I'm unsure how to interpret what I'm seeing: "Hours" means how long I've had this particular item? And for what I paid for it, "Cost per hour" is just that.

Congratulations on the launch!

tithe··on AI Systems Are Learning to Lie and Deceive, Scientists Find
> Reading between the lines, neither study has demonstrated that AI models are lying over their own volition, but instead doing so because they've either been trained or jailbroken to do so.

Correct, because to intentionally deceive one must be in possession of the truth (which LLMs arguably are incapable of).

Training sets for games of strategy should include behaviors considered deceptive and surprising. Is it any surprise then, that we see these behaviors reflected in the LLM's output?
