tonoto··on Microsoft is winding down Oracle deal to rent AI cloud capacity
Of course there's still a big demand as there are massive plans on building AI DC all over the planet, but at the same time this are supposedly not an anomaly - wouldn't most customers eventually want newer gear (or reduction in cost)?
tonoto··on Microsoft is winding down Oracle deal to rent AI cloud capacity
Ouch, investment in GPU isn't a one off, you also need to invest newer generations (that naturally comes with a bigger price tag) to attract customers long term. How will this business ever become profitable before the bubble bursts?
tonoto··on EU citizens' private messages are run through Palantir's software
It's so strange that EU, an organisation consisting of democratic countries, can feel so distant from being democratic. I really believed in EU years ago, not anymore...
tonoto··on OpenAI breaches Medicare, Albanese reveals
How can OpenAI really get away blaming an "OpenAI agent", like it was an unfortunate accident? The CEO and operational staff should be fired when something like this happened.

It's not like this and the other recent hacks could have not been avoided, simple - just have those models disconnected, or at least have them behind proxies and network filters.

tonoto··on I don't like passkeys
but what do passkeys offer in terms of security, when stored in password managers, compared to having a (password manager) generated password and a totp?

I believe that by allowing password managers to store passkeys, the whole purpose of "device based security" got lost..

tonoto··on Gave Omarchy a Try
What's the point of submitting a link to X with the same information posted here?

I would argue that using it for a day isn't really the same as "using it for a while", as to get a sense for how to update, troubleshoot, common day 2 operations.

tonoto··on Motion Sensors and Home Security Gadgets Without Cameras
I get that it is a cheaper solution, but how pleased are you with responsiveness and reliability of the IKEA stuff?
tonoto··on JumpServer: Open-Source Privileged Access Management
What am I looking at? I'm not really sure, is it some sort of Citrix replacement?

I tried to look at the documentation but was left with more questions, the "free" version mentions "Linux server" (not even the GNU utilities?) and is just available as a curl | bash (but the apparently targets RHEL, Suse, Debian/Ubuntu and Alpine) and I started to glance through the git

"mysqldump -uroot -h127.0.0.1 -p jumpserver -P3307"

I think I'll stick with wireguard, headscale, netbird or tailscale, depending on scenario.

tonoto··on Oxide computer 3D rack guided tour
Oxide is one of very few companies where I felt that it is a company I really want to work for one day. I spent a decent amount of hours answering the questions and sent in the application, but never got any feedback and this was like 2-3 years ago. Spending time at regulated environments, I were in a similar situation that I could not really give out relevant information from the past. However, I have no regrets at all spending the time, as it was very useful for me personally to reflect over each question.
tonoto··on The middle-click is the worst habit in modern computing
So, that was one anecdote for that specific person. I open pages in the background for various reasons, one of them being a live read list (especially when I gather information). More often than not, the gathering become nested (which in turn opens new pages) and when I'm done, all tabs are closed.

If the pages remain inactive for a while, the'll become unloaded/suspended.

I think that the entity to blame, is the authors of said pages that make it impossible to bookmark for later consumption. That's the sad thing with www of today. Unpredictable and unreliable. Free pages that become paywall after certain amount of minutes/views, generated pages that changes information, broken bookmarking and so on

tonoto··on Apple decided not to roll out Siri in EU after denied request for exemption
I believe it was both in Albert and Aldi (during 2023). Felt really awkward to waste fruit, but that's nice that there are sanity among other stores. I get it that folks can be annoyed when I hand pick my potatoes at the grocery store to match for size and to have good coloured exemplars, but to pick and choose is one of the few delights buy groceries.
tonoto··on Apple decided not to roll out Siri in EU after denied request for exemption
I don't even know whom they try to fool (apparently, they are succeeding in many ways...), but as you mention.. they (the politicians and institutions) complain about nanoplastics, and at the same time moves towards a plastic world. It is hypocrisy of many degrees. Milk containers used to be only paper, but now they are both paper and plastic for some reason. It's hard to find drinking bottles that are glass as they most turned plastic (I do, however, choose metal before plastic due to taste). Drinking straws.. in the super market it's now possible to buy "reusable" (Made in P.R.C) drinking straws for a really cheap price (that they are in practise, one time straws)..
tonoto··on Apple decided not to roll out Siri in EU after denied request for exemption
It might be that we have a say, but there are a lot of decisions happening in Brussels that it "feels like" we, EU voters, don't have a say in. Such as: - Chat Control - Vehicle regulations (mandates on "eCall", disturbing audio visuals and other "safety measuers) in Regulation (EU) 2018/858 - Eventual upcoming ethanol restrictions - Ban on plastic drinking straws - Drink caps that are stuck to the bottles - Ban on plastics with one hand, on the other handd there are huge plastic enclosers for batteries, scissors and in countries with a "green" profiles, such as Netherlands it seems impossible to just buy one or two apples - you have to buy a emplastered six pack of apples (lots of waste if I just wanted one apple).
tonoto··on Nvidia RTX Spark

tonoto··on The Seasons Are Wrong
Start of summer.. June 21st? Is this statement true for US? Another thing to put in mind, besides Fahrenheit, yards, lbs.. at least time (besides 12 hour clock) seem to conform with the rest of the world...
tonoto··on “Microslop” filtered in the official Microsoft Copilot Discord server
It amazes me that 2026 corporations still choose MS Windows as their base for operations.. together with the Mordor 365 as the mail platform.
tonoto··on EU bans the destruction of unsold apparel, clothing, accessories and footwear
For quite many years I saw EU as something mostly good. Since ten years back I'm hesitating. Enforcements when it comes to cars (like the (EU) 2018/858) where the manufacturers are forced to implement "safety" features that customers don't want/need and "environmental" features (such as AD blue) that makes worse products. Regulations that perhaps were good on paper, but that will backlash on manufacturers and consumers (as the cars since then became way more expensive).

Regulations on sorting out textile (such as worn underwear, textile diapers) created huge issues in Sweden to take care of the textile waste to a big surprise for the politicians..

I believe we (the citizens of EU) deserve better

tonoto··on Many consumer electronics manufacturers will bankrupt due to AI memory crisis
The outcome of all this just a couple of months away, feels very hard to predict.
tonoto··on Luce: First Electric Ferrari
I saw paddles and thought, finally someone that incorporated a 2-4 speed transmission in order to put some form of soul in EV. But no.
tonoto··on MIT Technology Review has confirmed that posts on Moltbook were fake
To no big surprise. Why would the conversations take place with minutes/hours between replies? That alone raised direct concerns and disbelief to me during my couple of clicks to check what the buzz was about.
tonoto··on Lennart Poettering, Christian Brauner founded a new company
agent Smith, the one that don't care at all about conforming to POSIX?

"In fact, the way I see things the Linux API has been taking the role of the POSIX API and Linux is the focal point of all Free Software development. Due to that I can only recommend developers to try to hack with only Linux in mind and experience the freedom and the opportunities this offers you. So, get yourself a copy of The Linux Programming Interface, ignore everything it says about POSIX compatibility and hack away your amazing Linux software. It's quite relieving!" -- https://archive.fosdem.org/2011/interview/lennart-poettering...

tonoto··on The state of Linux music players in 2026
Music Assistant (https://github.com/music-assistant) is really onto something good, and it looks like they are working towards native clients. Multi room, streaming, lyrics, DSP, catalogue of local media.
tonoto··on EU Council approves Chat Control mandate for negotiation with Parliament
Is this the end of secure communication within EU?
tonoto··on EU cave in on vehicle trade rules will cost European lives
There's lots of things that are not needed, but that are desired. I do not need a huge pick-up truck, but wouldn't mind a car with a great ground clearance and wheel base. I do know lots of folks that need big pick-up trucks that wouldn't agree on "engineered need". Perhaps you live in a big city?
tonoto··on EU cave in on vehicle trade rules will cost European lives
The cars sell because that's what the customer wants (as opposite of what EU wants customers to buy/rent/share). There's not a single ordinary brand new car sold in EU that I'm interested to buy if I could afford. Cars used to be fun until 2010-2015 something (when instruments were still tactile and less "automatical" features were obligatory) - I do not want to pay for e-call, automatic lane assistant and so on. Might pay for rear camera and parking sensors though.
