totesraunch··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
CICO. Put in the work and you'll see the results.
totesraunch··on Putin may be planning to pummel Kyiv into submission
You're right, it's peaceful in Ukraine, no civilians are dying. The Russian 'special military operarion' is going off without a hitch and civilians are welcoming their saviors. My mistake.
totesraunch··on Putin may be planning to pummel Kyiv into submission
These videos aren't from early-mid 2000s middle east where westerners can't tell the difference. They're clearly Ukranian cities and very high def videos (which didn't exist in past Soviet/European wars).
totesraunch··on Putin may be planning to pummel Kyiv into submission
They don't want actual evidence. There plenty of videos of civilians being murdered, which I'm sure they'll say isn't evidence enough.
totesraunch··on Masks Can Be Detrimental to Babies' Speech and Language Development
As if parents are sitting around at home talking to their babies with masks on...
totesraunch··on Do you find mentoring and code review boring?
Ultimately when mentoring your job is to make sure the mentee is on the right path, not on your path.

We need to make sure there some creative leeway (within reason) when programming, this allow for growth and exploration of solutions. Not all implementations are perfect but your job as mentor is to guide.

totesraunch··on Western megadrought is worst in 1,200 years, intensified by climate change
The fact that there's water for people doesn't mean the drought doesn't affect the state. Drought causes large amounts of dead trees (of which California is covered in) these dead trees catch fire and burn cities down. Water isn't just a consumable for humans
totesraunch··on Peter Thiel to step down from Meta’s board
When you have multiple game running isn't the trick just to play the move your opponent plays from the previous board? Do in reality you're only playing one game and everyone else is playing each other.
totesraunch··on Grocery store shortages are back
There's also the flip bucket traps which are pretty good. If you want to keep them alive you can otherwise you can put some water in it.
totesraunch··on You Win, Broken Database Schemas
The assumption here is that the entire world uses western naming conventions, there are many cultures where people are given one or five names or whatever number, and western society (or our idea of what a name is) is forcing them to conform.

These are not always 'arbitrary naming whims'.

totesraunch··on Povidone Iodine Oro-Nasal Spray: Effective Shield for COV-19 Protection
No problem with people who know more than one language (even without complete written fluency)… but why not have some third party editing/proof reading? Especially when submitting research to the NIH--which will live on in posterity.

Poorly written papers reduce the readers ability to focus on the content, however well researched.

totesraunch··on Povidone Iodine Oro-Nasal Spray: Effective Shield for COV-19 Protection
This thing is riddled with typos.
totesraunch··on Many surprise medical bills are now illegal
This is kinda an absurd take. On one hand you have people saying 'hey if you want x congress should make it law, the courts can't do anything about it.' but you're saying 'if Congress passes a law it won't work and only the courts can do something about x' it can't be both...
totesraunch··on Amazon threatened driver’s job for leaving route during tornado
As a west-coaster I'm curious, if during a warning people are driving/walking around what's the standard thing people do? Do business allow public in for safety or do people try and go home?
totesraunch··on First federal grant for psychedelic treatment research in 50 years
Every single thing humans do and consume is 'potentially dangerous'. Existence is dangerous.
totesraunch··on 94% of the universe’s galaxies are permanently beyond our reach
Imagine what's beyond the visible universe!

I'm no astrophysicist but it's probably closer to 100%.

totesraunch··on My indoor rowing tips after 15M meters
A concept2 ergrower costs $800-900 shipped
totesraunch··on Canada imposes Covid-19 vaccine mandate on federal workers, transportation
Legally distinct is not the same as chemically/biologically distinct.
totesraunch··on Canada imposes Covid-19 vaccine mandate on federal workers, transportation
It's insane we're still talking about this nearly two years into the pandemic.

Clearly people can't (or won't) connect their personal choices with the potential external effects of those choices.

totesraunch··on Meat and mental health: Meat eaters suffer less depression, anxiety
Seems like this has a lot more to do with the type of people who abstain from meat vs those who do--rather than the effects of eating meat.

People who abstain from eating meat due to animal compassion (empathy) might be more susceptible to depression due to their empathetic disposition.

totesraunch··on U.S. Supreme Court ends CDC's pandemic residential eviction moratorium
And people can't survive on slave wages. The people running the country (USA) are out of touch with the current reality many people live in. This isn't the ,1950s where a part time job can sustain anyone.
totesraunch··on Fauci: 'There's no way' the coronavirus was made with U.S. funds. Here's why
Doctor of ophthalmology doesn't mean anything to me unless we're talking about eyes.

Additionally, he's accredited by a board he himself created. That's like printing your own credentials.

On the topic at hand, some people on the US actually believe covid was created specifically to undermine Donald trump, despite the fact that this is a world problem. Talk about myopic.

totesraunch··on MoviePass settles FTC allegations that they limited usage, exposed user data
"Under the proposed settlement, MoviePass, Inc ...will be barred from misrepresenting their business and data security practices."

Isn't this how things are supposed to be from the onset? That'll teach 'em!

totesraunch··on Overkill objects for everyday life
Interestingly the Dyson fan is significantly louder than a cheap WalMart fan.

totesraunch··on Israeli airstrike in Gaza destroys building with AP bureau
Once again another myopic view of the situation.

Let us not forget all of the Palestinians displaced (and killed) due to the state sponsored settlements...

totesraunch··on The Amazon Rainforest Now Emits More Greenhouse Gases Than It Absorbs
There have been multiple mass extinctions in the past. Humans are just causing/accelerating the next one.

It is sad though but at this point earth as we know it is doomed--all so the ultra-rich can hoard money, and for what?

totesraunch··on For some, diligence against Covid-19 remains an expression of political identity
Tucker Carlson went on an insane tirade two days ago telling his viewers to start harassing masked people--including calling CPS and the police for 'child abuse' of masked children.. It'll happen soon enough if it already isn't.
totesraunch··on Epicurious Will No Longer Publish Beef Recipes
We eat unfertilized eggs which will never turn into a chicken, so really it's just an single cell.

Unless you eat Balut but that's not common in the west and definitely not a recipe on Epicurious.

totesraunch··on Fed up with the Mac, I spent six months with a Linux laptop
There is a great app for your window move/resize issue called Moom.

You can bind keys and mouse to window move/resize actions.

totesraunch··on Ask HN: How big are your tablespoons?
Baking is science, cooking is art. Use metric values when baking and intuition when cooking.
