treewalking··on CLEAR is a pox on America’s airports
I frequently create a new account so that I can post freely. I always try to post substantively, though of course a reader may disagree with this self-assessment. Were new accounts required to wait if either:

1. Create a new account every so often, so that in the event that I see a topic I’d like to comment on, I’m not precluded.

2. Just not post.

Were 2 to apply to a great many people I fear HN would be worse off. And anyway committed assholes would just take door number 1.

treewalking··on EU adopts global minimum 15% tax on big business
It’s weird that individuals are taxed on revenue but corporations are (usually?) taxed on profit.
treewalking··on After 20 years the Dwarf Fortress devs have to get used to being millionaires
If you model it as a lifetime annuity with inflation adjustment you are looking at more like 50k/year income at the outset were you to buy today.

My understanding is that annuities provide in general a worse return than the so called 4% rule on average.

treewalking··on No Hello: A New Wave
I can’t conceive of working in an environment where coworkers are enraged by minor communication differences. Like wow you just work with a bunch of assholes.

Probably that’s the thing to solve for, not “hello”, “query” vs “hello, query”.

treewalking··on Stripe’s real pricing: a primer
If it costs 1 extra human to build everything you’re losing money leaving Stripe.
treewalking··on Ask HN: How is the job search coming along for people who got laid off?
They use pass by value but objects are reference valued.
treewalking··on Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder
This conversation is good evidence that ChatGPT does have a more or less average ability to reason. We’ve got humans making similar mistakes with 1 digit numbers.

(Or… are they human after all?)

treewalking··on How We Built Fly Postgres
Why spend a few hundred dollars when you can spend tens of thousands!
treewalking··on What if we talked about over-60s’ screen time as we talk about young people’s?
While there’s perhaps a “clear and present danger” distinction, I think this analogy is a good one because we are talking about similar interventions: nonviolent, easily overcome. No one’s gonna die from taking a cab home or missing out on the latest conspiracy theory.
treewalking··on Can’t Hear What Actors Are Saying on TV? It’s Not You
I have no ADD whatsoever, but similarly find it difficult not to focus entirely on subtitles to the exclusion of all else.
treewalking··on Mauna Loa eruption underway; lava no longer contained to summit
I don’t know that this is a reasonable generalization. Certainly in my CS department one could write a thesis to receive an MS, and no MAs were offered. Just one data point, from a very large state school; YMMV.
treewalking··on The housing market is looking less and less appealing to consumers
In what way is it “greed” and not “how much houses cost”?
